The definition of success varies around the world, but according to Malcolm Gladwell its achievement can be broken down into a few components. Although Gladwell never truly establishes credibility in his book Outliers, he still backs up his proposed theories with reputable studies and sources which intrigue the audience to keep reading. The purpose of Outliers was to enlighten people about the different elements of success while also informing them of real life situations where seemingly less than likely people beat the odds and became the powerful figures that they are today. The intended audience is anyone who is looking to become successful or who is perhaps interested in the idea of success itself and wishes to learn more about it. Understandably, a secondary audience could be high school students who are about to venture out into the world on their own because with this book they will hopefully start paying attention to different factors of their lives and seizing opportunities that they may have otherwise passed up. Malcolm Gladwell talks about the 10,000 Hour Rule and also how I.Q. does not amount to much without creativity. He also speaks of how chance opportunity comes into play and that the distant background of a person still reflects how they handle situations in their present day life. Gladwell’s Outliers successfully informs the reader about the different components that add up to success with probable theories and credible studies to make for an interesting and motivational read. In the book, groups of successful people are broken down and Gladwell compares their individual characteristics to see if there are any abnormal trends. He starts with talking about how the chance birthdates of a large number of professiona... ... middle of paper ... ...y studies and experiments to form more complex viewpoints resulting in his theories. Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers is an extremely informative read about success and the different aspects that attribute to it. Gladwell is able to use many studies and sources that back up his theories of how success is achieved. Although he is biased towards his theories, the only real argument that can be made in opposition to his theories would be a debate over exceptions to the 10,000 Hour Rule. Outliers ultimately has a positive effect on the audience by making them more aware of their own chances at success and how if they may be lacking in one area (education, opportunity, creativity) all hope is not lost. Gladwell’s piece is essentially timeless and will be able to be applied to future generations because he used examples from a few different eras that still make sense to today.
Malcolm Gladwell, in the nonfiction book Outliers, claims that success stems from where you come from, and to find that you must look beyond the individual. Malcolm Gladwell develops and supports his claim by defining an outlier, then providing an example of how Stewart Wolf looked beyond the individual, and finally by giving the purpose of the book Outliers as a whole. Gladwell’s purpose is to explain the extenuating circumstances that allowed one group of people to become outliers in order to inform readers on how to be successful. The author writes in a serious and factual tone for the average person in society of both genders and all ethnicities who wants to become successful in life.
In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell argues that there is no such thing as a self-made man, and that success is only the result of a person’s circumstances. However, throughout the novel Gladwell points out that your circumstances and opportunities only help you become successful if you are willing to take advantage of them and work hard. From a twelve year old living in the Bronx, to those who were born at just the right time to become millionaires, one thing is the same throughout; these people because successful because they seized the opportunities they were given. The advantages and opportunities that came from their circumstances would not be important if they had not grasped them. Every successful man is self made, because he has seized the
Success is the chance to go out there and use the resources available to take advantage of opportunities that most people do not. Usually, things happen in life and it can prevent the process of obtaining success. In the readings, “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara and “Horatio Alger” by Harlon L. Dalton conveys the message that success is not always an everyday thing and it takes opportunities for it to become part of life. In “The Lesson”, an angered girl named Sylvia is taken on a field trip to a toy store with Miss Moore to learn a valuable lesson. The lesson is to become successful in society because it is the only way to make it to the top. On the other hand, “Horatio Alger” shows more of a realistic viewpoint where success is not as easy
...your own personal idea of success. Gatsby's ideas of successful maybe have become corrupted with greedy but that does not mean it lives on now. "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past" (Fitzgerald, Pg. 189) striving for the real American dream of personal success.
Opportunities are interesting. Most of the time, they appear and then disappear before we even realize what’s happening. For me, a missed opportunity has mysterious powers. This thing that I wasn’t even focused on has the ability to drain my energy, make me eat lots of bad food, and then leave me convinced that it wasn’t good for me in the first place. I mean, what is that? Because more times than not, I find myself reliving the past. Going on to play the what-if game that has the ability to bring about more nostalgia than is probably healthy.
If people work hard, focus, and are disciplined, they will succeed in the future. This has become a universal idea taught by parents, teachers, and peers. People have passed down this idea to the younger generations and they chose to live by this moral that makes sense. In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell debunks the universal idea that working hard will allow people to play hard and get further in life. Gladwell eliminates the traditional ideas of success by showing that opportunities, family background, and being born at the “right” time are actually what lead to success.
Have you ever wondered why certain people are more successful than others? Why some people may be given opportunities in life that you may not have gotten? Malcolm Gladwell explains this type of success in his book Outliers as accumulative advantage, meaning certain individuals achieve success based on the opportunities they are granted due to the abilities or qualities they may possess. Gladwell relates this notion to children being presented with more opportunities in hockey the earlier their birthdays are. For example, a child born in the early months of the year may be presented with more coaching opportunities because they develop more quickly than someone born in the later months of the year. At Seneca, we can create our own advantages by using the services and supports that the school offers. Three of the services I would use for an
In the general view today, the majority of people have come to assume that the building blocks of achievement are in the realm of possibility with the charisma and character of the individual. Contrary to this belief, Malcolm Gladwell proclaims in his novel Outliers that achievements are shaped by foreign forces in which certain people are granted particular opportunities and advantages that not everybody is given by chance. In spite of this his formula carries strong evidence in terms of these asserted forces like blatant lucky opportunities, date of birth, and family background assisting to pave the road for achieving success, Gladwell openly dodges the expense of hard-work and persistence. Gladwell’s theory of acquiring success holds some legitimacy, yet he purposely leaves out the quality of a person's individual effort within his analyses. The heart of success is within one's ability to endure through difficulties and misfortune as opposed to it solely being a matter of people taking advantage of various outside
Outliers is a nonfiction novel written by Malcolm Gladwell about peoples stories of success and how they got to where they are today. The Matthew Effect, The 10,000 Hour Rule, and Three Lessons of Joe Flom are all examples of looking at people’s specific variables to determine their success. A person’s birthday, how long someone has done something, having an opportunity, and a person’s ethnicity are all variables in explaining what has helped them become what they are today.
The article “How to Be a Success” by Malcom Gladwell speaks about how success is something that can be achieved if you put the time and work into it, and how success is not achieved overnight but rather through long hours of constant practice. His article is targeted to more than one group of individuals. The groups of individuals that his article targets are teenage students, young adults, adults, people who want to become an expert, or want to succeed in something they have an interest in and in general society. Another article also related to the success of an individual “An A+ Student Regrets His Grades” by Afraj Gill describes how in society many schools focus more on students’ grades, rather than their learning, and how a student is
The Author of the novel Outliers A Story Of Success Malcolm Gladwell not only is he an author but also a speaker and a journalist from Canada who worked in the New Yorker . The book that will be discussed here is called Outliers which means that an individual or an object is different from other members of the same category or group . The author’s main thesis statement in the book is that people are successful not only because of their hard work and natural ability but because of unseen advantages and opportunities .
The topic of outliers for scatter plots can be a confusing and a topic that is specific to a person’s interpretation. The point of (1300, 20), is not considered an outlier due to the point being part of the overall pattern. Outliers are considered “striking deviation from the overall pattern” (Gerstman, 2015, p. 334). The point (1300, 20), is an element of the positive association of the scatter plot. Different people may interpret a scatter plot in different ways. An excellent example is how you interpreted the point to be an outlier. However, the textbook stated that there was no outlier to the data set. This is a confusing component of interpreting a scatter plot; it is up to the reader’s interpretation. Excellent question, I hope this clarified
In Chapter 8 and 9 of Outliers: The Story of Success, Gladwell exams some of the ways that Asian and American students learn math, arguing that some of the principles in the US education system should be reconsidered. I generally agree with Gladwell’s point of view. I believe in two ways, students ' principal spirit and the length of students’ studying, the US education system leaves much to be desired, though an overhaul is in progress.
An outlier is someone or something that is situated away from a main body and is statistically different in value from others in a sample. Outliers are all around us. We just don’t realize it. I know I didn’t even think about how other people are successful before I read Outliers. Many people find things that they have had all their lives to benefit them in ways they couldn’t even think about. They might have even thought about them as being a hindrance, like being Jewish or having ADHD. Sometimes the things that cast us out of a group can make us successful, people just don’t realize it until they actually look for them.
Outliers are people who are not of the ordinary and tend to be extremely successful. Malcolm Gladwell is an English-Canadian journalist who is a best selling author. Gladwell has also been a staff writer of the New Yorker since before the new millenium. In Outliers, Gladwell describes the 10,000 hour rule in which he himself has been apart of. His writing in The New Yorker and selling many books has logged in time well above 10,000 hours. Having so many hours of practice gives him a high reputation and tells the reader that his books are worth reading. The purpose of Gladwell’s book is to inform the reader. Some people may think his purpose is to teach, which is also true, but he solely supplies the reader with information and not how the reader can execute it themselves. Gladwell can give the reader information on how to be successful, but he cannot teach them how to be successful. He cannot make the reader successful because the reader has to take this information and make their own destiny. The intended audience is young people and the secondary audience is anyone who wants to be successful. Gladwell knows that everyone wants to be successful and for those who intend to reach their goals. By reading Outliers, the reader can see their dreams and goals as a reality and will strive to reach those dreams and goals. Chapter 2 of Outliers, the 10,000 hour rule, tells the stories of successful people and groups who became successful due to an abundance of practice. The 10,000 hour rule is what it says, practicing over 10,000 hours through a period of time and therefore becoming a master at what they do which makes them successful. Gladwell tells the reader that people become successful through a lot of practice which is presented by r...
