Throughout the ages, humans have been looking for a way to see into the past. In the year 1990, astronomers from NASA made this possible. Sending the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit with the space shuttle Discovery, NASA would make historical discoveries beyond their wildest dreams. Earlier this year they discovered a galaxy approximately 13 billion light years from Earth. Viewing the object at 750 million years after the big bang, scientists have looked into a time shortly after the "Dark Ages," a time before the first galaxies and quasars were formed. This incredible discovery was made with the aid of a cluster of galaxies known as Abell 2218. Being as massive as it is, Abell 2218 bends and amplifies any light that passes through it, working as a natural telescope ("Hubble"). The Hubble Space Telescope has become a great and valuable astronomic tool that NASA says is too costly and dangerous to keep running, a decision that may be premature.
Originally planned to launch in 1986, the Hubble Space Telescope has seen its share of problems. Starting with the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle, the Hubble's birth into space was delayed four years (Raven). On April 24, 1990, NASA put the telescope into orbit, only to discover that its primary mirror had a systematic aberration. To fix the problem, a mission in December 1993 set out on the space shuttle Endeavor.
The astronauts of the Endeavor replaced the High Speed Photometer with the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR). This device was designed to correct the aberration of the primary mirror. Even before the Endeavor mission, the space telescope produced many interesting images and was much more accurate than any Earth telescope. With the lack of atmosphere, the HST can look at objects at an angular distance of only 0.05 arcs second apart. The traditional ground-based telescopes can only resolve images about 0.5 arcs second apart, even under perfect sky conditions. With the new improvements, the HST could perform at the level for which it was designed. It could more accurately calculate the rate at which a galaxy is "receding from the Milky Way as a function of their distance" (qtd. in "Hubble"). For those confused by that statement: the HST would take a picture of a galaxy at one point and three seconds later (or any other given amount of time) take another picture of the galaxy and measure how much farther away it is.

Astronomers were seeing and learning more in just days of the launch of the telescope than past astronomers had in their lifetimes. Its advanced technology has made it possible to obtain countless amounts of data about space and open many doors in the exploration of space. Hubble is a telescope used by NASA as one of the orbiting "great observatories”. Hubble was launched in 1990, changing the history of astronomy since Galileo's telescope with an expected lifespan of 15 years, although will really be about 22 now. Early on, Hubble was used to discover galaxies beyond the Milky Way. The purpose of the Hubble Telescope is to gather light from cosmic objects so scientists can have a better understanding of the universe around us. Hubble is one of the best telescopes to ever orbit the earth. It was one of the very first telescope to be placed in space. The purpose of Hubble is to take pictures of the galaxy as it orbits around the Earth at 17,500 mph. These images are very detailed because the Hubble Space Telescope orbits around the outer atmosphere. Even though weight is not an issue in space, Hubble weighs 24,500 pounds. Many different instruments are used by Hubble, including the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. Originally installed in May 2009, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph replaced the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR), which corrected the blurred pictures in its first service mission. The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph focuses on ultraviolet light. Because of the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, the Hubble’s sensitivity was improved ten times more in the ultraviolet light and increases up to 70 times when looking at extremely faint objects. The purpose of the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph is to break down radiation using the ultraviolet light. The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, otherwise abbreviated to COS, studies the evolution of the galaxy and the universe around us.
As the Hubble telescope’s life comes to a historic end, we look back at all it has done for the scientific community. The Hubble has helped scientists make many new discoveries about our universe. Galileo Galilei and Edwin Hubble were huge contributes to the astronomical community, therefore a major help in transforming the first telescope into something as amazing as the Hubble. The first telescope was perfected by Galileo in 1609, and around four hundred years later the Hubble was launched into space. Since then the Hubble has shown scientists many new discoveries about space that they would have never been able to figure out without the Hubble’s help. I must follow in the steps of my grandmother and contribute to the cause to help those currently affected by the impairment but also look towards a future where a definitive treatment can slay the beast that is Alzheimer’s. Ways I can contribute to the cause include participating in Alzheimer’s Walks such as the one in Binghamton and continue my family’s dedication towards raising money for the Alzheimer’s association. In addition, knowing about the risk factors and causes gives me a better understanding of my personal risk for attaining the disease. However, this new knowledge does not frighten me or worry me about if my future will contain this diagnosis, but enables me to be prepared and ready to conquer any tribulation I encounter.
