Hubble is a telescope used by NASA as one of the orbiting "great observatories”. Hubble was launched in 1990, changing the history of astronomy since Galileo's telescope with an expected lifespan of 15 years, although will really be about 22 now. Early on, Hubble was used to discover galaxies beyond the Milky Way. The purpose of the Hubble Telescope is to gather light from cosmic objects so scientists can have a better understanding of the universe around us. Hubble is one of the best telescopes to ever orbit the earth. It was one of the very first telescope to be placed in space. The purpose of Hubble is to take pictures of the galaxy as it orbits around the Earth at 17,500 mph. These images are very detailed because the Hubble Space Telescope orbits around the outer atmosphere. Even though weight is not an issue in space, Hubble weighs 24,500 pounds. Many different instruments are used by Hubble, including the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. Originally installed in May 2009, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph replaced the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR), which corrected the blurred pictures in its first service mission. The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph focuses on ultraviolet light. Because of the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, the Hubble’s sensitivity was improved ten times more in the ultraviolet light and increases up to 70 times when looking at extremely faint objects. The purpose of the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph is to break down radiation using the ultraviolet light. The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, otherwise abbreviated to COS, studies the evolution of the galaxy and the universe around us.

Cosmic rays are to scientists much like photons are to astronomers. Just as astronomers use light (or photons) to view our galaxy and beyond, scientists use cosmic rays to infer useful properties about our galaxy. In fact, cosmic rays offer one of the few ways in which scientists can actually sample real matter outside of our solar system. By identifying the various nuclei that are dispersed throughout our Galaxy, scientists hope to unravel the mechanisms that actually produce these nuclei -- from stellar nucleosynthesis to nucleosynthesis within supernovae to nuclear fragmentation. Just think, the iron in your blood came from a supernova billions of years ago in our solar neighborhood! To measure cosmic rays directly, before they have been slowed down and broken up by the atmosphere, research is carried out by instruments carried on spacecraft and high altitude balloons, using particle detectors similar to those used in nuclear and high energy physics experiments. The Hubble space telescope is a deep space imager used by NASA to explore space. It collects light and magnifies images, and gives Astronomers the most detailed images known to man. Hubble has been at work since April 25, 1990, and celebrated its 20th anniversary in orbit April 24, 2010. Twenty years in service, and still being the leading source for space news says a lot about Hubble's overall longevity and productiveness. Over 6000 scientific articles have been published based on Hubble data, with some of its discoveries being so significant that NASA would have needed multiple satellite missions to accomplish the same results. Its importance to me is based on my lifelong interest in astronomy, and the galaxy we live in. It's importance to others, such as NASA and Astronomers around the world, is due to the fact that Hubble is currently the leading source for new information and ground-breaking discoveries when it comes to deep space, But after a stalled launch in 1985, 5 repair missions since it's beginning, and billions of dollars in funding, I asked myself: Is Hubble worth it?
