Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
I have never liked writing; I always thought it was a waste of time. It was a great therapy but I never found academic writing to be useful just tedious. Only ever writing when I had too made it harder for my writing skills to grow or improve in any way. I have not taken an English class since the 10th grade, even then I never gave it much effort, just doing what I had to so I could pass the class. Then I jump in to College English 1010, I feel like I do well in all other subjects but this one. English is my worst nightmare.
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
I had always been a strong writer in high school; I know how to form an argument and support it fully, but this did not prepare me for the writing at a college level. I expected to be reading long and boring books about topics that did not pertain to my life; as it turns out, this assumption was completely false. All of the three essays that we were required to read in class were fairly difficult to understand, but after a second reading, the essay's meaning became clearer. I also feel as though their messages and key ideas are captivating. I definitely thought they would be extremely dry and difficult to understand.
The Written Necessity Writing is the essence of the world around us. Everyday we encounter different styles of writing, whether it be through a newspaper, magazine, email, or even a text message. Each of these writings affect us on how we interrupt the opinions of others and the ability to engage our own thoughts. Therefore, we can think of writing as building a bridge. We build bridges filled with words that connects us to the outside world.
My English 1310 course was taught by Professor Daniel Stuart. He taught us the concept of academic writing and why it is important. Academic writing is the process of breaking down ideas, using a formal tone, deductive reasoning and third person. Writing done to carry out the requirements of a college or university on a research based level. It requires a starting point or introduction, followed by a thesis on the preferred topic, then comes proving and disproving of the evidence based arguments. It is important because it is a way to communicate our thoughts clearly and originality. It helps us think and see what evidence we can come up to contribute to that thinking. This course approached this idea of academic writing by exploring further
Reading is an action that allows taking in coherent words that are written or printed. Writing is text composed of sensible words. Reading and writing are two essential subjects that are difficult to enhance skills and understand the definition of words. To get better and knowledgeable at reading and writing trying to mark in book and writing candidly can be a start. “How to Mark a Book” gives advice about learning to take notes and highlighting important facts. “Freewriting” describes how writing can be improved when no feedback is given at all. The first day I walked into Freshman Composition I had the idea that everything assigned was going to be extremely frustrating and difficult, as this is a college class. Equally important, my expectations for the class was to earn at least a B, further my writing abilities, and learn more about college. As the semester started, I noticed that my writing was not at the college level and I needed to learn how to improve it. Along with improving my writing, I was also able to learn about college life. With this essay turned in and handed back, I began to realize my writing needed practice and critiquing. Furthermore, I gave myself goals to achieve in Freshman Composition, I have learned useful tools to improve my writing, and I have learned more

Tormenting yourself on what to write. Looking at a blank document doesn’t make it any easier. Repeating the same thing over and over in your head about how bad you are at this, scratching your head, biting your nails because at this point you start to wonder if going to college is really worth it. And as you start to finally write random thoughts, it suddenly becomes a bit less complicated. I have discovered that as long as you start to write anything and stop being so critical about your writing, believing that something good will come out of your essay, sometimes
“The more you read the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go” (Dr. Seuss).Throughout my childhood and reading Dr. Seuss books this quote was important in my development as a reader and writer. Growing up as an only child my parents wanted to make sure that I had all of the resources I needed to succeed, one being the ability to read and write. The quote by Dr. Seuss was highly regarded by those who wanted me to succeed in life. They wanted me learn to read and write so that I can know and experience more than they have. At an early age reading and writing was stressed to a high degree, but as I got older reading became a struggle and writing was something that helped relieve that struggle.

Becoming a good student for most is not an easy task. One may be asking if there is a definite way to distinguish a good student and the answer is it 's merely impossible to say a student is considered “good” based on only one factor. Many people define good students as kids who have the best grade in the class. Since most of the time this is true, grades can only be looked at as a single way of how we define the term “good”. We must remember that even poor students can earn high grades occasionally, thus proving why grades are not the best indicator of a student’s quality.
