The Written Necessity
Writing is the essence of the world around us. Everyday we encounter different styles of writing, whether it be through a newspaper, magazine, email, or even a text message. Each of these writings affect us on how we interrupt the opinions of others and the ability to engage our own thoughts. Therefore, we can think of writing as building a bridge. We build bridges filled with words that connects us to the outside world. However, each year, millions of students enroll in college with the lack in necessary writing skills. As part of their academic curriculum, most college students are required to take two semesters of college composition, such as with four year degrees. However, even before students are accepted into college, writing is a necessary skill as part of their applications. Once enrolled in their choice of college, students are then required to write essays assigned by their professors. Despite the need in knowledge on how to write, to be successful in college and in a career, good writing is a required skill. Therefore, all colleges should make two semesters of composition a mandatory requirement for college students.

Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
Learning to read and write are both considered to be fundamental human skills, that we begin to learn from the day we start school. As time advances, as do our minds, and we are expected to evolve in our reading and writing skills. Finishing high school is a large milestone for the lives of young adults; however, there is so much to learn in order to reach the next big milestone. To be a writer in college can challenge our preconceived thoughts on how we write. Although some skills remain unchanged, high school graduates are faced with overcoming new ways of doing a skill that seems so simple that it is practically innate. The definition of writing skills for college students is much different than high school. However, considering we have come so far it is time to go over the information we already know and challenge ourselves with ideas that we are yet to learn more about.

Freshmen always think that they have enough college writing skills. But the author in the article does not think that because most freshmen students believe they have spent a lot of time writing articles, but it's not enough for college. “What we found really
Over the ages our society has changed the definition of the meaning of dating. During the early 20th century and WWII dating was about long-term friendships, love, marriage and families. The essay “ Dating as Competition” by Beth Bailey illustrates how dating over time has changed dramatically by making dating into a competition. He argues that dating now in days is about popularity, competition and no longer has a moral meaning and how Men and women tend to want to be seen with people who will boost their image. In society many people build their reputation and popularity through cars, clothes, frat and sorority memberships and money. Being seen with someone who is just as popular with the same materialistic things will only increase your popularity. Through my experiences and observations I agree dating has changed and no longer has meaning because people date each other for the wrong reasons. I have witnessed many of my own friends who date to boost their appearance. Many actors and actresses that I look up to also marry or date other famous people so that they can show to the social media that their life is nothing but perfect. Not only are they rich and famous but they also want to marry or date someone who is idolized by many just as they are. Which also increases their personal image. Also Internet social websites are now being designed to find people mates who will match their popularity. Therefore dating has changed and no longer has the same meaning as it did before in the early ages.
For many, college-level writing seems like a very intimidating and foreign concept, which only a select few with natural talent can succeed in. However, in “The Inspired Writer vs. the Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues that even the greatest authors struggle with their writing, and that writing well is not based on some innate talent. L. Lennie Irvin helps make college-level writing easier to understand in “What is ‘Academic’ Writing” by giving general guidelines on how one is expected to write in a college environment. Another helpful article is Mike Bunn’s piece, “How to Read Like A Writer,” in which he explains the process of reading a piece of text as if you were the author, asking questions about writing choices throughout the reading.

Academic writing is a very discouraging topic that most young writers do not even want to begin to think about or imagine doing. Throughout college everyone will be asked to write multiple academic essays regardless of their major. We have read two sources in class that have helped clear up some common myths and also helped make academic writing not seem so foreign. I personally do not enjoy writing like most people would feel about reading a dictionary. I am cautiously treading water with every word I type. I have always found writing to be a tedious process. I have never found ease in wording something the way I want to; therefore, it usually sounds so much better in my head. I’ve never considered myself to be comfortable with writing in general. For example, I always had a hard time telling if I needed a comma in a sentence or not. Sometimes it was obvious, but it seems more confusing most of the time.
Although adequate writing skills are indispensable for life, leisure, and employment, quite a few students do not learn how to write effectively. Since writing is an exercise in thinking, it is important to balance the process of writing with the mechanics of writing. The areas of the brain involved in the writing task are varied yet interrelated; therefore, a student’s individual needs will determine the method of instruction they receive.
