Some people are born with the knowledge on how to maintain and manage their time and others learn it as they grow. I was not so fortunate. While I managed to keep my work areas organized and had somewhat of a routine to help keep my life in relative order, I was always struggling with “losing” time. It was a problem that always left me feeling guilty about not finishing on time while at same time I was overwhelmed about things that were piling up. I always procrastinated and never got things done the day I thought I should. When I was occupied at school or hanging with friends, I was constantly stressing about the many task I had to get done at home. Then when I was at home I would think about tasks that were left undone in the “outside world”. It was a never ending cycle that prevented me from being relaxed or enjoyed some days. In the book Time Management from the Inside Out by Julie Morgenstern explains a variety of plans for time management by breaking them down into easy steps. The plans offer different options and structures for people who are constantly struggling with time ma...

The key to acquiring good time management skills is setting our priorities in order such as the importance of studying your first priority. An example of this skill is taking time out of our busy scheduled life as students to spend time on reviewing assignments, and thoroughly reading through and understanding the study material. It is imperative to structure your time efficiently in order to be a successful learner. The first method that can be used to find out how your using your time is drawing up a time management wheel, writing down how you use your time in a twenty four hour day, then drawing up another wheel of how you would like to use your time, compare the two and keep the time management wheel you want to follow in a ring binder, diary or folder. “Remember, a new habit takes twenty one days of repetitiion to form” (Lengefeld, 2009.pp 21), so follow the wheel chart and see if it works. The second Method is writing down assignment due dates on a calendar, dairy or cell phone wherever it stays as constant reminders for important deadlines, this is an effective way to keep on top of assignments so that you can learn to prioritize your tasks within your day effectively.

On any given day, my time regardless of how planned it is by making lists can be thrown off track due to usually a sick child/pet. No matter how hard I try, I know my kids will get sick and they will expect me to take care of. Since I cannot usually control when that will happen, it’s important that I take advantage of what I can control, such looking ahead at assignments that will need my attention to plan adequate time to complete assignments a head of time, instead of waiting till the last minute. When I know what to expect I can make plans. Another
Prioritizing my time is a task that I need to work on, turning things on time and keeping up to date with assignments is difficult. I usually procrastinate and leave things for the last-minute, and causes my work to be less effective than what I can carry out. Studying for tests is a struggle, because I get distracted easily and get frustrated with all the amount of work ,so I leave the work for later. Some management strategies I will use, are breaking up large project into pieces and when I have a difficult time getting started I will do the easiest task first. I prioritize my life with most important to least important. I give the most concern and time to people who are important and events that I know are more influential to my life. Personal issues negatively impact me and I ignore the problems but It also brings more problems because I don’t resolve the problem at the moment.

In order to effectively manage the time, I should know how I spend my time. I maintained a time log recording the activities for every thirty minutes for a week and evaluated the results by asking myself if I did everything that was needed. I determined the task that required more time and time of the day I was more productive and analyzed where most of my time was devoted, identifying these helped me determine to plan realistically and estimate how much time is available for other activities.

College is a world of new and different experiences. The most important thing to remember while in college is that you are a “college student” you’re not just here for the ride. This is a place where your responsibility is at a new height. There’s no one here telling you when to go to bed, eat, take a shower or do your homework. This is the type of freedom every young adult dreams of after being in a house of rules for eighteen years. But the downside to having this freedom is we have to adjust how we’d normally handle our day to day operations. The key to college success is time management; the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity.
