A large number of teachers leave the profession long before retirement (Ingersoll & May, 2011). A lot of the research conducted in Australia and overseas confirms that one of the major reasons for this is teacher stress. Those who do not leave also report stress as a major issue. It is a challenge that remains to be dealt with, especially when the teacher well being is closely related to student well being. Briner and Dewberry (2007) found a significant association between teacher well being and student’s performance. Beginning teachers are particularly vulnerable to stress and burnout as they are yet to develop coping skills to deal with stress. Between 40% and 50% of beginning teachers leave the profession within the first five years (Ingersoll, 2012). The main reason for teachers to leave is stress and burnout (O’Brien, Goddard and Keeffe, 2007). Exact figures are a lot of harder to obtain in Australia. A recent report (Attrition of recent Queensland graduates, 2013) estimated that teachers who leave within first five years in Australia range from 8% to 50%. In a large scale survey, this report found that more than 30% of teachers consider workload and stress as very important factors in relation to their decision to leave teaching. Buchanan et al. (2013) interviewed teachers in their first, second and fourth year of teaching. Apart from commonly known factors like excessive workloads and student behaviour, early career teachers also reported feeling physically and emotionally isolated. Strength of this study was that it studied teachers at different points of their careers in the beginning years. Even though this was a good way to identify the changing trends in stress factors in early years, the long term nature of study made it hard to retain participants in the study. Whether an instructor is teaching in a primary, secondary or university level, he or she will in no doubt, experience some type of stress in their teaching career. It can be from the lack of respect in and out of the classroom, or the overwhelming workload and poor time management, or the shortage of resources available. Whatever the case, the instructor may breakdown into something called a burnout. According to Mearns and Cain (2003), a burnout is chronic stress from working with other individuals will have a bodily response of cynicism, emotional exhaustion, depression and so forth. Not only does the burnout have a negative affect on the teacher himself, but also it will ultimately affect the students in the classroom, who may be particularly unaware of their teacher’s circumstances. Although, not everyone will fall ill of a burnout while under a plethora of stress. There may be individuals, especially Type A behavior people, who will thrive under the stress and be unaffected by a burnout.

Stress is defined in the dictionary as “state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life”. Everyone encounters stress in their life caused by many different variables in life and we all cope with in different ways. The way one copes with the stress is how it can affect our body. Some take to working out, eating healthy, take breaks from what is stressing you out and getting plenty of sleep which are good ways to cope with it. Some take to other coping mechanisms that are not very great for the body. Some examples are stress eating, abuse of drugs and alcohol, bottling up the stress, and depression. These bad methods can cause serious damage to one’s health on the body.
A significant percentage of college students spend their time on campus with a lot of stress. This is due to a tight schedule that requires them to balances class time, assignments, tests, projects and extra curriculum activities. Other students are attached to the corporate world notably adult education offered in our campus. The working lot fined it challenging to meet extra workload in their courses. The final exams have a difficult feeling for the candidates due to anxiety of passing. Cheating has become a modern trend in college life with 32% of students admitting that they have practices unethical conducts in their college life. College life has turned into a competitive field which has to be balanced on the pay slip when creating a budget. Even though life is full of stressing situations, experts argue that college life has emerged as a major cause of stress to students. Stresses can be limited or overcome once we understand the major roots of its occurrence in a different setting (Jason, 2011).The discourse determines the cause of stress among students in Strayer University. As mandated by the President of Strayer University, we are going to determine the cause of stress in college life and its effect on the economy and the victim at large. Strayer University is a for-profit higher education institution that offers degree program for working adults and undergraduate and graduate courses.
Throughout this paper, it will be addressing ideas on how does the topics of workload, job resources and working environment have relevance and an important impact on teacher working conditions, and how can this affect student’s behavior and academic performance. In order to develop those ideas, I will use specific bibliography to clarify and give valid arguments to support my points of view, give an historical background of the issue and relate it with my ELAB experience form the last weeks. Stress occurs from a large assortment of categories and factors. These different components and the amount of stress someone gets all levels out to the person and their tendencies. Stress is seen a large majority of the time coming from jobs or the workplace. Usually stress comes from a mixture of lack of sleep and abundance of work. Too much work can fatigue the brain and can result in headaches and increased heart rate, or anxiety. People start to feel unnecessary pressure, resulting in stress. Stress can occur in many different forms, there are many different types of stress that show up in people, all dependent on the person. Stress can be very serious and it could lead to suicidal thoughts or severe headaches, night terrors, and sleep depravity. It is most important that when stress has brought you any severe symptoms, that you confront someone about this.
We have students mouthing back to teachers or even hitting them, parents yelling and trying (and sometimes succeeding) to get their way, and administrators caught in legal issues and overwhelmed. This leaves the teachers alone to handle more and more. It is not really surprising the number of educators who are choosing to leave the profession for better money and more respect in other fields. Though this exodus leaves the remaining stressed even more since new teachers are becoming harder and harder to find, train, and retain. The administrators are still overwhelmed and juggling even more issues such as where to put all of the students you have with the handful of teachers
Nowadays, the amount of people who want and able to be a teacher has been lesser and lesser from time to time. It is because teaching is a very hard and stressful job and it has been considered as the one of the top five hard jobs in the world (Lewis 2014). Work stress is the stress occurred at work, is the ‘natural’ limit of human endurance and ability to recover, is the product of the unsustainable pressures and requires placed on the worker by late capitalism (Wainwright & Calnan 2002). The occupational stress is associated with reduced productivity, impaired employee, worker turnover, well-being and absenteeism (McCormick 1995). The signs of stress of a teacher can be in physical, psychological and behavioral form (Wainwright & Calnan 2002). For example, the symptoms are block out new information, involve themselves only superficially, display in appropriate humor and some more else. These signs of stress may cause by the work conditions, workload, job insecurity and relationships at work (Edworthy 2000). There are three simple methods for teachers to handle their stress, such as having a good time management, a healthy lifestyle, and right attitude.
Novice teachers, or those in their first five years of teaching, have an exceptionally high turnover rate. Ingersoll found that half of all teachers leave within their first five years of service (2003). It is over this span of time that teachers learn the most about the art of teaching (Ingersoll, 2003). Districts many times spend the most money on teachers during this five year phase. Those teachers that aren’t able to create a sense of success with students are less likely to find teaching a rewarding profession and have a higher rate of turnover (Johnson & Birkeland, 2003). While the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future (NCTAF) has created a cost calculator to estimate the actual teacher turnover costs to schools and districts, the calculator doesn’t include the largest cost which is lost teacher quality and effectiveness (2007).
Those who look to the profession as a career would need to nourish these perceptions in order to prevail over the negative aspects that surround the profession. The process of teaching goes far beyond the presentation of facts, it includes the dedication of both heart and time. While compensation and working conditions are the main downfalls in teaching, there are many other situations that cause individuals to turn away from the profession. Teaching is obviously a hard complex job and the individuals who answer the call, encounter many frustrations. They are required to first develop goals for classroom instruction and with these goals develop lesson plans, while implementing effective classroom management (appropriate discipline). Due to the trivial problems that occur in people’s daily lives massive amounts of stress can arise. People perceive and manage stress in many different ways. The causes and effects of stress are numerous and one’s ability to manage stress is vital in maintaining healthy living.
In recent years, the cliché image of a teacher has come under attach. Research has shown that teachers often work in an isolated setting in which they are considered experts in their specific area; however they often lack the support and equipment needed to do their jobs effectively. As a result, to the inadequate working environment new teachers often leave the profession within the first five years. These conditions often exist because the educational system fails to prepare our teachers with the proper tools and experience needed to do their job well (U.S. Department of Education, 2010).
