For my article response assignment, I chose “The ABCs of Managing Teacher Stress.” In this article, it discusses the major stressors that come with being a teacher and how to decrease the stress so they do not become a statistic. The way the authors break up the article is by making three strategies: A is for acknowledge, B is for Behavior Modification, and C is for communication. The article did not mention some stressors including salary, little down time, constant paperwork, student test scores, and selflessness.
Acknowledge is the first strategy of the article and is the most important for successfully decreasing work-related stress. Teachers need to acknowledge which stressors are affecting them the most, so that they can work towards eliminating or at least decreasing them. The list of general stressors that effect most teachers include professional relationships, class size, resources, workload, student behavior, changes, and role conflict. After acknowledging their personal stressors, teachers are recommended to eliminate or decrease current behaviors and implement new ones.
The second strategy of reducing stress is Behavior Modification. This is step encourages certain behaviors that will decrease stress and effectively handle any future problems without acquiring as much stress. This section recommends exercise, meditation/diaphragmatic breathing, daily quiet reflection, and to find a positive environment for social support. Three other major pieces of advice include time-management strategies, creative problem solving, and cognitive restructuring. ...etimes people become complacent and hit a plateau where they are comfortable. Whenever this happens, God wants to wake them up and encourage growth. This can happen in many ways, including stress. “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2-4). Christians also need to remember that everything is on God’s time. Though a teacher may not be able to fully eliminate a stressor, they should still stay positive and keep their focus on Jesus, because he is doing works in them.

Attention Getter: Life is like a huge roller coaster, a journey full of twists and turns, and ups and downs. And sometimes in this journey there arises various situations where one is unable to deal with these turns, let alone have the energy to face the ups and downs. In situations when the downward spiral becomes difficult to overcome it seems to linger on and on. The major cause of such feelings, are the chaotic activities of life. Stress is no stranger to our daily life. Stress in its severer form can lead to everything that we care about and love become strained and puts a burden on our physical and mental health. Therefore, we must take a hold of our stress, hang on to life and practice helpful techniques to vanish these stressful dilemmas. When we understand our situation, the better we will be able to get through them with ease.
When we think about stress affecting individuals, various images can come to mind such as the single mother working two jobs in order to keep food on the table, the father who just lost his job and has a mortgage along with other bills, the teen who is pressured under cultural norms and wont be true to himself, or the fulltime student who is working part time in order to pay his/her college tuition.

Provide Opportunities for Growth: Employees can feel a level of stress if they feel they are stuck in a position with no opportunity to grow. By offering training to employees to expand their work skills or by redesigning jobs to give employees more control over work activities and work that is more meaningful can reduce stress levels. Everyone deals with stress at some point in his or her life. Most people deal with it daily. As defined in the book called Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, stress is, “The mental, emotional, and physiological response of the body to any situation that is new, threatening, frightening, or exciting” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). This stress is caused by a stressor, which is also known as “a stress-causing event” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). Stressors can take all different forms, from moving to a new town, having a baby, or even writing a paper (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). One major stressor in life can be going to college. If not coped with properly, these stressors can leave a person with too much stress that could end up harming them mentally and physically, such as developing an illness (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). There are several ways to cope with stress. Some healthy ways to cope with stress would be practicing emotion-focused coping, building time-management techniques, and practicing meditation.
Children suffering emotional and behavioral disorders are in need of effective interventions and strategies that will provide them relief in stressful situations and help them self-regulate their behavior. Effective interventions for this population could result in reduced distractions (both personally and within the classroom) and enable them to increase their learning time, thereby optimizing their educational careers. An intervention of yoga and related relaxation techniques may provide students a natural and holistic approach to accomplishing these goals.
During this course I learned many stress management techniques. One of the first stress management techniques I learned was creating a list of things to do in order of importance. Before using this technique I left things to do all at once. This technique helped me by equaling out my work load. Another technique for stress I learned was yoga. In today’s world, education is more important than ever, and with education comes homework. However, many teachers give too much homework, which makes students extremely stressed. In addition, some are into sports or after school activities, and some have part time jobs they have to work at, which adds additional stress to the already overworked students. Mounds of homework can cause students to be under so much stress that it affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally. Stress can make students sick with colds, stomach aches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and/or anxiety disorders (Menninger and Dugan).
Stress is a major concern in today’s society. Stress is linked to many different ailments as well as fatigue and many other physical symptoms. Physicians have proven that stress is very dangerous, attributing to diseases and a shorter life span. Some kind of stress management is recommended in order to help one deal with their stress so it doesn’t consume them.
Sometimes a student need to take six to seven classes per semester and the professors can assign new assignments for each classes. The students need to submit all the assignments before the deadline and as the deadline closes in pressure keeps building up. It can monumental task to complete two to three assignments a day or sometimes up to seven per week. Thus, the students will not have enough time to concentrate on the assignments as they also need to do other things such as attending classes, getting involved in co-curricular activities and part time job. Thus, the students will be stressed because of lack of time to finish the assignments. Some assignments are group assignments that need to be done with other students. If every group member cannot give their full commitment to do the assignments together, the students will be stressed too. So a lot of assignments can be one of the causes of stress among university students. And then there are exams and midterms which can be very stressful on it 's own as the results of those exams will reflect on a student 's future career
Stress is an ongoing dilemma that occurs in each and everyone’s life. It is a factor that is undoubtedly a part of daily living. Due to the trivial problems that occur in people’s daily lives massive amounts of stress can arise. People perceive and manage stress in many different ways. The causes and effects of stress are numerous and one’s ability to manage stress is vital in maintaining healthy living.
In recent years, the cliché image of a teacher has come under attach. Research has shown that teachers often work in an isolated setting in which they are considered experts in their specific area; however they often lack the support and equipment needed to do their jobs effectively. As a result, to the inadequate working environment new teachers often leave the profession within the first five years. These conditions often exist because the educational system fails to prepare our teachers with the proper tools and experience needed to do their job well (U.S. Department of Education, 2010).
