The importance of becoming an achiever is that I will have a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction and fulfillment in life. In social work profession, it is notably important that a practitioner be able recognize aspects of their decision making that may be motivated by uncontrollable circumstances such as past experiences, family values, and personal values. Uncontrollable circumstances, such as the examples listed above, all attribute to personal biases a practitioner may display when working with individuals, groups, families, or communities. A personal bias is the negative or positive perspective or demeanor, both knowingly and unknowingly, of any particular individual, or group of individuals, based on different diversity factors that may skew the way that an individual interacts or perceives an individual or group (Miller, Cahn, Anderson-Nathe, Cause, Bender, 2013). Therefore, as a social worker, the importance of practicing self-awareness is that it helps the practitioner to shuffle through personal biases, and in return, aid in social justice and be effectively responsive to diversity factors in the practice setting (Bender, Negi, Fowler, 2010).

One thing I was certain of was that I’m a people person. I thrive on helping others and it gives me a sense of satisfaction. Throughout this essay, I will discuss why I am a good “fit” for social work, the strengths I possess, and some of the most pressing social problems facing our country today.
As we reviewed the self awareness module this past week it was very interesting to see how the self assessments provided the class information about their own personal human behaviors. I was aware of most of the information provided but there were some tendencies I was surprised to find fitted my character. It was good to be reminded of the things I had forgotten about myself. Learning about my individuality and how I interact and respond to others based on my traits, personality and behavior has been an awakening experience. It is also great to know that I can work on areas that need improvement to become a more balance person to better assist my subordinates, teams and organizations.

Knowing who you are and what your strengths and weaknesses are help to not only improve your craft, but also to help shape you as an individual. Personally, my strengths lie mostly in my ability to listen and empathize. I genuinely care about others even if they don’t care about me. I want to see everyone do his or her best. In addition, my passion for this field comes directly from my heart. I rely heavily on my experiences to remind me of how dark life can become and I use that to help me better understand the issues facing many people today. For instance, I can understand and accurately address issues facing teenagers because of my past. I know what they are going through and can offer some sort of help. I also pride myself on my education and willingness to continuously better myself. I think the best quality any social worker can have is the love of the field and the eagerness to absorb as much knowledge as possible. Tricia Bent-Goodley states in her 2015 article The Art and Science of Social
My Self Awareness score is an 85, which means that while I am slightly above average, there is plenty of room for development. I have a clear understanding of what I do well, what motives and satisfies me, as well as which people and situations push my buttons. (Goleman 2002, p. 25) Yet, there are times still seem to let my emotions take control of my actions. I am still discovering the balance that will allow me to recognize those emotions, accept them, and reflect upon them later and not to discourage me.
