When presented with the question, “What does the word ‘preponderance’ mean?” most people would pull out their smart phone, and look up the definition on Google. Thirty years ago, you would have to yank out the old dictionary and go to the pages with the “P’s” on them. Instead of doing the work and searching for information, the modern population has been spoiled by the easy access to this information, and therefore became lazy when it comes to looking something up. A student may be able to tell their teacher by using the internet that preponderance means “larger in number”, but if the teacher asks that same student four months later, there’s a reasonable chance that the student will not remember what it meant. The problem is, there is such a reliance on computers and phones, it is easier to take two minutes and search it on the web. Reliance on technology is to the point that the brain has been rewired, and people lack the ability to dive into deep thought or come up with original ideas. Not only does it disrupt a student’s ability to learn, but the same thing goes for those around them. Cell phones and tablets have gotten so many people in trouble during their high school days that it has become almost necessary to take these devices away. If the devices students are using are not going to be used properly, then they should not be used at all, especially when they prohibit students from achieving better things like handwriting and social interaction skills. Students have become so close minded to the idea of technology being removed from the classroom that they seem to be combined as one with their personal devices, and let that device control the way they think.
