How I Learned to Read and Write
Learning to read and write is a lifelong journey of mine. These abilities take time and effort to learn how to do them. They are extremely useful tools and are pathways to unending knowledge.
When I hear the word reading, it does not bring pleasant thoughts to mind. I have always been a fairly slow reader. In elementary school it seemed as if I was always the last to finish an in class reading assignment that our teacher had given to us. If it is not leisure reading that I myself enjoy, it takes a good amount of time and effort because I really have to concentrate on what I am reading to gain any knowledge from it.
When I think back to the beginning of my journey of learning to read, the first person that comes to mind is my Aunt Cindy. At the time she was a first grade teacher, therefore she was well apt to help me learn to read. She went online and printed out a few easy-to-read stories. She folded the printed pages into little books, and I thought they were quite spectacular. I remember her sitting on my bed with me and helping me sound out the words in them. James 2

She had a huge stack of cards with different letters on them that we would go over repeatedly. I can still see in my mind the easel in the front of the room with the intimidating cards propped upon it. I am sure I was quite unaware of how important those moments of the day were in my future. The next memory that really sticks out in my mind is doing reading comprehension quizzes in sixth grade. Reading comprehension is something I have struggled with throughout my career in education, but I do believe that taking those quizzes every week did help me improve. As I read more and more, reading seems to become easier for me. “Practice makes progress,” is a true statement when it comes to
Living in the Southern United States during eighteenth century was a difficult time for African-Americans. Majority of them were slaves who received manipulation, sexual abuse and brutally whips to the spin. They were treated this way in order to stop them from gaining hope, knowledge and understanding of the world. Some African Americans managed to obtain these qualities from books and use them to escape from slavery. Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist who wrote an autobiography, from which the excerpt "Learning to Read and Write" explains how he developed literacy. In the excerpt, an African American slave banned from learning to read and write, breaks the law in an attempt to free his mind from the restricted beliefs of his master. One significant idea portrayed from Douglass's ordeal is that reading and writing is a vital skill that benefits humanity.
... that sort of reaction to the reading. Lastly, I can read at my own pace. I have no obligation to read speedily in order to seem as though I have no complications with the words in the text.
Writing is linked to spelling and reading because reading depends on letter recognition. Students become familiar with letters through writing. When a student manipulates the curves and lines of letters, he uses sight and touch, which reinforces the shapes of the letters into memory. Learning about letters also promotes curiosity about their sounds. Sound and hearing is brought into play as the student begins sounding out letters and words. As they write, students learn that print is actually an ordered sequence of letters, instead of a random jumble. If a child does not learn to recognize letters and words instantly, he will have a very difficult time learning letter sounds and recognizing actual words. Learning to read will be extremely difficult.
During that time we would work on tricks I could used to stay focused on one like at a time. It would be a strip of transparent paper that would highlight one line of a book at a time. This tool would help me not jump ahead in my reading. As time went on I improved and we would move on to using a tool that would highlight a paragraph at a time. After a year or two of this extra help, I did not have to go as often. Although this helped, it made me feel like I was not as smart as the other students. I felt like everyone was looking at me when I would leave to go with the other
Many people including me believe that reading and writing should not only be done for the purpose of getting a good grade or because a teacher tells you to but that it is like most journeys because it begins with a single step and should be practiced daily and both appreciated and respected not looked on as a trial or a punishment but as a creative outlet for the mind.
“Phenomenologically, Donny and Timmy were not growing up in a literate environment. Although they lived in a home situation in a city situated in a country that contained many forms and functions for print, they did not experience it. They did not notice it around them; they did not understand its uses. Their world functioned without written language” (Purcell-Gates, 1997, p. 58).
Overtime, the ELL population of students has been overlooked and have not been given the amount of help they have needed to be able to become successful in the United States. Literacy is not the only thing ELLs have to deal with, but also assimilating to the American culture and just trying to survive economically. According to the NEA (2008), “two-thirds come from low-income families and three out of four ELLs are Spanish-speaking” (para. 3). Many immigrant families come to America to have a better life, but many end up struggling even more because of the lack of financial support and their language barrier. By sending their children to American schools and having them in English Learning programs, parents hope their children will have a better
Writing a college essay can be hard. and writing a good unique college essay can be even harder. Writing a good distinct essay can be hard. It’s hard because writing is not my best subject. I usually always go to my peers to help me get ideas I search the web for ideas. The most important thing to do differently is the way you go about writing your paper when writing it. When you give students an essay topic you never receive the same written essay. You always get a different written and typed essay, some are funny, some are boring, some might make you cry, and so on. I think that the way someone is pursuing the subject is important. Not all topics are going to be the best topics to write about but if you can take a boring topic and make it interesting you 've already won the reader in my opinion.
Being literate defines who I am, and forms an integral part of my life. From the practical to the creative, it aids, and enables me to perform in the tasks that modern society dictates. I shall explore the many aspects of my life that are affected by literacy. Through this, understanding in greater depth what it means for me, to be literate.
I personally do not enjoy writing like most people would feel about reading a dictionary. I am cautiously treading water with every word I type. I have always found writing to be a tedious process. I have never found ease in wording something the way I want to; therefore, it usually sounds so much better in my head. I’ve never considered myself to be comfortable with writing in general. For example, I always had a hard time telling if I needed a comma in a sentence or not. Sometimes it was obvious, but it seems more confusing most of the time.
There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
Most children who have the opportunity to attend school learn how to read and write in preschool or kindergarten or even have parents that teach them these skills.
Reading doesn’t just make your reading capability increase, but also your writing skills. When you consistently read books, you will meet new words. Sometimes they can be easy, but they can also be hard to understand. By learning new words your vocabulary will expand, and your writing will be more
But at the same time, I feel that you create time for the things that you want, so that is why I say I like but don’t love to read. At this point, I basically read my textbooks and required readings. The only time I read other than that is when an article catches my eyes on the internet and I am curious about the story. Most of the stories that catch my eye are news stories, but I do look at the entertainment articles at times. I will read the magazines at the grocery store checkout line, at the beauty salon waiting for my hair to dry, at a
Reading always became tiresome to me. We had a reading block in class everyday. The reading block was to make us read fifteen minutes straight a day. Ms. Peshca, my seventh grade teacher, ensured that the class would read. I never read the books until we started reading The Hunger Games.
