How I Learned to Read and Write
Learning to read and write is a lifelong journey of mine. These abilities take time and effort to learn how to do them. They are extremely useful tools and are pathways to unending knowledge.
When I hear the word reading, it does not bring pleasant thoughts to mind. I have always been a fairly slow reader. In elementary school it seemed as if I was always the last to finish an in class reading assignment that our teacher had given to us. If it is not leisure reading that I myself enjoy, it takes a good amount of time and effort because I really have to concentrate on what I am reading to gain any knowledge from it.
When I think back to the beginning of my journey of learning to read, the first person that comes to mind is my Aunt Cindy. At the time she was a first grade teacher, therefore she was well apt to help me learn to read. She went online and printed out a few easy-to-read stories. She folded the printed pages into little books, and I thought they were quite spectacular. I remember her sitting on my bed with me and helping me sound out the words in them. She had a huge stack of cards with different letters on them that we would go over repeatedly. I can still see in my mind the easel in the front of the room with the intimidating cards propped upon it. I am sure I was quite unaware of how important those moments of the day were in my future. The next memory that really sticks out in my mind is doing reading comprehension quizzes in sixth grade. Reading comprehension is something I have struggled with throughout my career in education, but I do believe that taking those quizzes every week did help me improve.
