Research shows that learning styles theory is a neuroscience myth. Although this may be true, the majority of educators when given a survey indicate they believe in the learning styles and use them in their classrooms. In this essay, I will explore why this discrepancy is occurring and look at ways to share the truth with current and future educators.

Students have preferences about how they learn. Students have preferences about which learning style makes them feel successful and comfortable. However, the research cannot prove this. This is the tricky part. How an individual would like to be taught often depends on what is being taught. The learning style theory claims that individual’s learning styles are going to be the same, independent of the content. To illustrate this point, imagine having to install a new dishwasher. Would you rather read text, see illustrations, listen to a podcast, view a video, or call the repair-man? The learning styles theory would indicate that your preference would be the same every time and clearly it will depend each individual situation.
Life cannot be fit into clean and simple categories, for learning styles or anything else.

The days of lecture-based lessons, drill and kill worksheets, straight rows, and hitting students with rulers is gone. Our schools look much different now and are more inclusive and open. Group work, project-based assignments and electives have replaced some of the old ways. Although this may be true, there have been some growing pains along the way. Learning styles is the latest concept that is being explored and debated. If most educators can agree that there are better ways to teach lessons, then we are on the right track. There are multiple ways to teach everything and this is where the creativity of teaching excites most educators. Matching specific students to a specific learning style is a myth and when educators understand that this is what the learning styles theory is really saying, it will become clear. After reading the book “Perspectives on Learning” I have gained an enormous amount of knowledge on not only how to become a teacher, but what it takes in order to become a successful teacher. To determine the best way I learn, I carried out two different learning styles questionnaires online. One may find that they are not always categorised in a specific type rather they may have more than one learning preference. Firstly, the most commonly used Neil Fleming’s VARK model. This urban legend sounds like a great idea but the problems with this idea are that not every individual understands what type of learning style they use, that the learning style is best for their education, and that most people don’t fit just one style of learning. Although there have been tests for people to discover their learning style those tests cluster learners in groups and do not account for students who have multiple learning styles. In the tests you would be placed in the area you scored highest even if there were multiple areas of learning styles present. The tests are not very reliable to group students in so they are inefficient to place learners in these categories of learning styles. Another problem with this educational strategy is knowing “how to tailor instruction to particular learning styles,” (174). It is difficult to tailor to each learners style and usually teaching must be done in a way to teach the majority because it is “more fruitful to focus on the fundamental things that learners have in common than on the myriad of styles on which they are different from each other,” (175). Everyone has different learning styles. Learning styles are important because they help you better understand materials in classes. They are there to guide you and become a better student. Learning styles help you better grasp the material and better process it through your brain. When learning you want to do what is most beneficial for you. That is why there is many different learning styles to suit every person. There is three different types of learning styles categorized. The first learning style is auditory. Auditory is meant for individuals that enjoy asking questions, talking and listening, as well as like to read out loud. Visual learners are more interested in charts, graphs, neat surroundings, seeing rather than hearing, and are pictured to be timid as they read to themselves rather than out loud. Finally there is the kinesthetic learning style. Kinesthetic is to touch, to feel, and usually learn by doing.
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
