Group cohesiveness is a dynamic process reflected in the tendency for a group to stick together. Group members are willing to work together and communicate with another one if there is group cohesiveness (Huang, 2009). I agree that it is vital to play off of the skills and strengths of each member for this will strengthen the overall experience.
I have experienced issues with a lack of group cohesiveness that has left me with a negative viewpoint towards groups. According to Toseland and Rivas (2005), group dynamics are “the forces that result from the interactions of group members” (p. 64). These forces refer to either the negative or positive influences towards meeting members’ socioemotional needs as well as goal attainment within a group (Toseland & Rivas, 2005), like within my class work group experience. Some of dynamics that continue to emerge and develop in my group is the effective interaction patterns and strong group cohesion, which has generated positive outcomes and group achievement thus far.
The team from Nut Island had the potential to accomplish great things. They were a very cohesive team. Cohesiveness relates to the degree to which members are attracted to and motivated to remain part of that team. A cohesive group member values his or her membership and strives to maintain a positive relationship within the group. Every person working at Nut Island wanted to be there and would not let anything get in the way of their team.
Team cohesion is the process of connecting the team. It’s a makes the team stick together and achieve it even when everyone is tired, under pressure or Faces difficulties and challenges. There many aspects to strengthen the strong team association and some are shown in.
Gamification technology is certainly an emerging technology, and organizations and businesses are aggressively applying this technique and technology. In 2011, Gartner predicted that, by 2015, more than 50% of organization would be applying gamification technology into their managed innovation processes, and 70% of Global 2000 organizations will have at least one gamified technology/application (2). Gartner also identified gamification as one of the emerging technologies in 2013, with market penetration of 1% to 5% of target audience. One of the key themes of Gartner’s 2013 annual report was the evolving relationship between humans and machines, and gamification was one of the technologies at the overhyped stage (3).
Work groups have a great impact upon the attitude and the conduct of group members. The group with high cohesiveness has more “we” feeling rather than “I” feeling. There is more cooperation and positive work environment when the group has high cohesiveness. The researchers are also trying to explore if this kind of cohesive behavior on groups have any impact upon the citizenship behavior they show. Cartwright (1968) observed that the cohesiveness has a positive impact upon intragroup communication, favorable interpersonal evaluation, and also it influence higher OCB if it matches with the group norms.
Bedard (2015) takes an interesting approach to understanding motivation; she talks about gamification, which refers to the use of game elements in contexts other than entertainment. Businesses, she says, are increasingly “bringing game elements into the work place to motivate employees to engage in numerous kinds of efforts, from learning to creative idea generation to quality improvement” (Bedard, 2015, p. 43). It makes sense that games can serve as illustrations of motivation: people are drawn to playing games for a reason, and that reason is –often- to seek new challenges and become winners. Realizing that a group can become a high performance team is important. Accomplishing this goal is invaluable, advantageous and profitable. Once able to operate from a group to the high performing team is a great step into preparation into the big business world. Leaders and members must also realize not only how to accomplish this but that some problems will and can arise from different demographic characteristics and cultural diversity. That is if one is in such a group, which the probability would be quite high.
When an organization is looking for new creative ideas, they should ask their employees. The employees of the organization have an in depth look and are more understanding to the needs of the organization because it is where they work and are involved. Managers can call on a group of employees and together, they can come up with solutions for the organization. “Group decision making is a type of participatory process in which multiple individuals acting collectively, analyze problems or situations, consider and evaluate alternative courses of action, and select from among the alternatives a solution or solutions” (Group Decision Making, n.d.,para.1).
The work community has several members, it is vital that these individuals act as a group, so that the common goal was achieved. This section describes the team, the team's importance, team building and why before-mentioned issues are important. This section also takes place through the cases and at the end of the self-evaluation.
A group can be define as ‘any number of people who (1) interact with one another; (2) are psychologically aware of one another and (3) perceive themselves to be a group’ (Mullins, L, 2007, p.299). Certain task can only be performed by combined effort of a group. Organisation can use groups to carry out projects, which will help to achieve its overall aim. However, for the group to be successful they must understand what is expected of them and have the right skill to complete the task. . (Mullins, L, 2006)
Teamwork is defined as, “the process of working collaboratively with a group of people in order to achieve a goal.” (Business Dictionary, n.d.) Ultimately, it provides us with a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of unity amongst each other. It allows us to create healthy relationships, and bond further with our peers, and generally, it’s a necessity for our lives. Teamwork aids us with developing imperative life lessons and skills. It also helps us gain a new perspective, and discover our strengths and weaknesses. Personally, I believe that I work well in a team, and I possess the skills of a good leader. Lastly, the reflection back is very important to the corrective emotional experience. What I found useful about group cohesiveness is knowing that you are never alone at first; the members feel alone, but they are others who have gone through the same things they have. Group cohesiveness gives members a sense that they belong and are welcomed. The group members are initially very supportive and accepting of new and old members.
When analyzing a group and its development, there are several points to consider. The greater the similarity in member attitudes and values brought to the group, the greater the likelihood of cohesion in the group. Group cohesion will be increased by success in achieving the groups’ goals, low frequency of required external interactions and under conditions of abundant resources.
