My First Robotics

When people hear the term “FIRST Robotics” or hear anything related to robotics, they automatically assume that it has something to do with robots destroying each other or nerds sitting in the corner eating pizza and building small robots; I used to be one of those people who thought that before joining FIRST Robotics. In all honesty, I was very reluctant on becoming a part of FIRST Robotics in the first place because I did not know if I would fit in or even enjoy it for that matter. However, thanks to two special people I gave FIRST Robotics a shot, and I’m thankful that I did because I wouldn’t be the person that I am today. By becoming a more charismatic and outgoing person I ended up building up a lot of relationships with my peers throughout the years and I ended up being voted as the Homecoming King this year, which shows that being a nerd is okay and that no one has to be in sports to receive such an honor. Another way FIRST Robotics has impacted my high school experience is teaching me valuable life skills that can’t be taught in the classroom and helping me apply what I learn in the classroom to real life situations. I always wondered why I needed to learn concepts such as Integration and Deriving complex problems, E=〖mc〗^2, public speaking, and etc. FIRST Robotics taught me the reason why by doing tasks such as programming with LabView, talking with people from different companies such as 3M, planning outreach activities/fundraisers, working on awards such as Chairman’s and Woodie Flower’s, and etc. Also, by being involved with FIRST Robotics I ended up building life skills such as time management that I couldn’t have learned from the classroom and I will definitely apply these skills in the future. It’s weird to say, but I’ve been planning my future ever since elementary school (ex: college, major, jobs, and etc.) and I’ve been sticking to it ever since. However, I didn’t have a vast knowledge of all the other S.T.E.M. related jobs out there and I didn’t have a backup plan just in case I didn’t become what I wanted to be or get into my dream college. By being involved in the FIRST Program, I expanded my knowledge on the other aspects of S.T.E.M and the careers associated with it, also I figured out what I exactly want to be in the future and a backup plan just in case it doesn’t work out. By going to places such as 3M, Northern Tier Energy, Baxter International, The University of Minnesota (Twin-Cities), and etc. I was given the opportunity to talk to employees, interns, and students about my future career plans and help me solidify them. In the near future, I am hoping to attend the University of Minnesota (Twin-Cities) and major in Physics and hopefully become an Astronomer after I graduate from college, however if that doesn’t end up working out I am hoping to be a Physicist or an Aerospace Engineer. By being involved with the FIRST Program I am now feeling more confident and ready for the future that lies ahead of
