As an ambitious individual, I have tried my best to be a part of activities that amplify my success in the future. In my junior year of high school, I had the incredible opportunity to join a rookie FIRST Robotics team called Wildcat Robotics. FIRST Robotics is an organization founded by Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers that was created "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology", hence the reason it is called FIRST. I knew joining the team would be an excellent way for me to decide if the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) field was the right path. Although, I've learned more than just science and technology from FIRST Robotics, I've learned the importance of keeping an open outlook.
With a new team, I wanted to
take the challenge of being Head Programmer. Already knowing the programming languages C++ and a bit of Java, I was confident that I was in good standings for the season. Yet, I realized that I was unable to use either language as the generally used in FIRST was LabVIEW by National Instruments. LabVIEW is a graphical based, the goal to ease the process of programming. I had never used LabVIEW before, nor had experience in graphical based programming languages. I was stubborn on working with it as I had already two perfectly good languages under my belt. Therefore, this served as a major roadblock for a successful season along with being a rookie team included having nearly no prior knowledge of how FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) works. Even with the roadblock, the team progressed. Creating a robot weighing 120lbs that could perform the game challenge for the year was a huge task. With the electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic parts coming together, there was just programming left. I was under immense amounts of stress trying to figure out LabVIEW by myself, which I did not want to do, with the six weeks of build time. Luckily, veteran teams from different locations were willing to assist those who desired it. So, I video chatted with another team's programmer. Once I had the basics, I was able to program the whole robot in three days. After that stressful situation, I’ve kept my mind open. I know I can overcome any opportunity and even help others, which then can open up more opportunities for me. I hope this mindset can also be transferred to me being a student at MSU who can make the community more like a big team. We all have one goal -- to be successful.
Some of my extracurricular activities include Science Olympiad, STEM Academy, International Club, Advanced Academics Club, and Chem Club. During high school I have participated in various community-based organizations, the two most common being Beta Club and National Honor Society. However while these clubs have allowed me to give back to my community in numerous ways, it was strangely not either of these clubs that expanded my interest in the following particular social issue. Rather it was my involvement in Science Olympiad, specifically volunteering to help run a local Elementary school tournament, that expanded my view of the STEM field.
I come from a magnet school that is blessed to have a large number of extremely bright students that are very dedicated to their studies, a must because of the difficult curriculum involved. The community is a very strong one with many of the students going on to do great things, which has given me the inspiration to believe that I can do whatever I want in life, as I see others who are well on their way. Within this community, I have been able to form strong bonds with other students who have similar interests and ambitions. We are able to push each other to learn new things and, through a mix of competition and collaboration, are able to truly progress in many ways, pursuing excellence in both our scholastic and extracurricular endeavors. I believe this has made me a better person, inspiring me to take on a more demanding schedule and to help others when they struggle, because they help me as well. These friendships have also encouraged me to dream big, as others around me are doing, inspiring me to apply to highly selective schools and believing that I will do something to
Students are given the opportunity to live and go to school with other students that have similar ambitions at heart. At my school, it is extremely rare to find other students who also have the desire to do more than what is minimally required to pass their classes. Simply being placed in an environment where everyone wants to be at school, and working towards the best education possible, would not only be motivational, but inspiring. The experience of meeting current Gatton Academy students has alone given me the inspiration to reignite my dreams of making a difference in the scientific community. It is thrilling to even think about having this stimulation surrounding me on a daily basis.
This was one of the main aspects that brought me to this crossroad that I am at now and that I faced at the beginning of my college career. When I decided to go to college I wanted to be a doctor, so that is how I started out. Looking at the challenges ahead of me on that path I did some research and decided to change paths and pursue a career in Health Services. In health services I can still help people the way I like and it also fits into my plan for myself. With what makes me myself I look at the crossroad I am at now and all I think to do is to keep moving forward and straight. Looking back is a different me and going left or right provides many new challenges, so forward is my only option. Even though I will run into many other crossroads and challenges on my current path, I feel the way I am put together I can overcome anything that comes my
Encouragement is a common word throughout this paper. The best thing that can be done about the problem of dwindling enrollment in technical college is to encourage people considering this schooling. Encourage people to look into this type of education, because we do need more Blue Collar workers in our future. Encourage current or past students to talk about their experiences in tech schools with people who are confused about what they want to do in their life. Encourage them that this option is NOT for under achievers, but for over achievers.
Character Evolution: From Power to Tragedy In Sophocles' tragedy Antigone, Sophocles explores the importance of listening to others as well as the importance of having the ability to compromise. In the beginning of the play, Creon is an aspiring leader wanting to protect Thebes. Through his interactions with the Chorus, Creon’s personality changes from the original good intentioned leader to a stubborn ruler with close minded ideas; refusing to listen to the advice of others. However, at the end of the play he learns to embrace the advice of others at the cost of his entire family dying. Creon’s character is a good-willed aspiring leader, through his interactions with the Chorus and Haemon.
“It took a lot of discipline, hard work and dedication. At a young age, I was determined to be successful. In the eighth grade, I made history by becoming a member of the inaugural class at the world-renowned STEM Early College at North Carolina A&T State University. Yes this was a great accomplishment, but as I went through high school I learned you don’t gain understanding of the course material by taking notes and paying attention in class alone, but rather studying the course material and being able to apply it in various real-life situations. My sophomore year, I made history once again by becoming the first high school student to acquire an internship with Elon Law School. I knew this would be the perfect opportunity for me to test if I wanted to be in the law profession, and gain some insight on what really goes on in a law office or non-profit. They denied my request at first because I was not qualified to care for clients due to my lack of law knowledge. However, later they were able to develop a personal research internship, which gave be the same type of hands on experience without the need of the knowledge taught in law
A rating-scale survey given in February and repeated in April to the same freshmen students provided insight into how freshmen viewed STEM subjects and whether they felt capable of success. It asked questions such as “Do you feel supported by the school in STEM careers?” Results from the survey indicated that interventions such as time spent in Advisory working on academic and career plans ha...
As a student in the classroom, I have consistently challenged myself with honors and AP classes. Some of these include various honors and AP Sciences, History, and English. Throughout my four years, I have stayed active in school by being a part of the baseball and the robotics program. I have also dabbled in the environmental club as well as best buddies. I had the opportunity to manage the varsity baseball team my junior year. During the course of my junior year as well, I was blessed with the privilege of being a member of the Mountain Pointe Robotics team, Pridetronics, and their drive team. During the season, we won both our regional and state competitions and was able to travel to St.Louis, Missouri as a part of the FRC national
A person’s interest has for always seemed to shape the character of a person in a positive perspective. Along with it, one can learn substantial information about themselves. In regards to how we illuminate our character, our interests seems to be a determining factor as to how we get involved and more importantly, provide self-development. As for myself, I enjoy doing an array of activities; I play sports, I am a member of the ROTC Ranger Challenge team, and I volunteer frequently. My interests do surely represent who I am as a person. Along with interests, one can see considerable accomplishments. Luckily, I was able to see such accomplish throughout my life, but more notably in my high school career. I began my freshman year of 2011 by
Rising mostly through self-efficacy and outcome expectations, career-related interests foster educational and occupational choice goals (Bandura, 1997). Especially to the extent that they are clear, specific, strongly held, stated publicly, and supported by significant others, choice goals make it more likely that people will take actions to achieve their goals (Lent, Hackett, Brown, 1999). Their subsequent performance attainments provide valuable feedback that can strengthen or
My heart was pounding and my hands were sweaty. I couldn’t tell if I was nervous or excited. I watched breathlessly as my team-mates were in the field setting up the robot. Switching it on, precisely positioning it, and checking all the motor-controlling wires. Everything had to be done perfectly and properly otherwise the robot would be completely incapable when the match started. Finally, they fled the field and the buzzer rang indicating the start of the first practice match. The robot took off flawlessly, driving itself through the fifteen second autonomous This was only a practice match at UC Davis’s Sacramento Regional in the FIRST Robotics program, but that moment marked the culmination of six weeks of hard work. About a little over
When I look at how mankind has evolved over years, it amazes me. My career goal is to become a mechanical engineer. I aspire to become skilled enough to create mechanics, which will improve people’s lives. I come from a very hardworking family. As the first son,a lot is expected from me to set good examples for my younger brothers.
I feel a jolt and come to my senses in a small box, my mouth sucking in air, my mind immediately running a list of what might have happened. Words. I know these words, somehow, although my mind has never spoken any of them before. I know definitions, I know context, I know grammar and syntax. These words dance in my head, in the dark and quiet of this box.
My academics at both high school and post secondary levels made me confident enough to shape a definite career in Computer science engineering. My aspiration and thirst for knowledge led my way into the undergraduate course in the same, for whose admission I had to compete with almost 175,000 students. It involved rigorous work and lengthy study hours, which made me more determined and confident.
