As a high school senior, an individual is exposed to a vast amount of opportunities that can alter their lifestyle and shape them for the future. I have been given many opportunities to get involved in activities and organizations at York County School of Technology. These involvements have helped me to become a better professional leader and has helped me understand how valuable the quality of dedication is. I believe my dedication will help to contribute to the Presidential Leadership Program since I can provide many ideas to help the program progress throughout my college years at Bloomsburg University. I will be able to contribute to this program’s mission by getting engaged in many different community and social interactions that will
help the organization. Similar to my high school years, I plan on engaging myself in as many opportunities that are provided to me at Bloomsburg University. Whether this be getting involved in the community or taking leadership and professional roles, my objective is to make a difference in the community, and I believe this objective will help to contribute to the mission of the Presidential Leadership Program. At York County School of Technology, I had the opportunity to get involved in many community and social events where I dedicated myself to helping others. An example of this is when I participated in the schools National Honor Society Program’s kinship party where the students and faculty bought presents for orphaned children, fed them, and introduced them to Santa Claus. We worked together to ensure that the children had a good time while visiting our school, and dedicated our time afterwards as well. I have made many contributions to the community while engaging myself in these programs, and plan to also contribute to the mission statement of the Presidential Leadership Program.
Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities including: National Honor Society, student council, National Council on Youth Leadership, student ambassador, drama club, yearbook, and chamber choir. It is throughout these activities that I have felt myself grow as a person and have found many opportunities to shine as a leader. The Burger King scholarship is an amazing opportunity and an extremely generous foundation. It is with the help of this foundation that allows for people to make their dreams come true. I am grateful to of been chosen as a Burger King Scholar and will use the scholarship to make a difference.
Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. Rather, this is someone that has a true connection with their peers, and has unmatched passion for what they do. This is also a reflection of the work of Vroom & Jago (2007) who state that leaders should motivate others to do great things. With correctional workers, effective leadership and management is essential to the safety of other workers. To those housed in correctional facilities, and to the community at large. How new leaders are trained and prepared for their important role is essential to the success of correctional institutions. This paper will address a review of best practice regarding leadership in correctional facilities as well as an analysis of Corrections Corporation of America’s (CCA) Samberg Program. Finally, the paper will address a specific training evaluation model to enhance the program.
“Who’s going to step up?”. “Who’s going to change this?”. People ask these questions everyday. I realize that I have never truly thought about the defining characteristics of a leader. I was given a list of qualities and upon reading it, I proudly realized that I demonstrate leadership. But the important consideration should not be how I successfully match this definition, but instead why I do it. I was elected treasurer for the class of 2016, a student body elected official, and hold that position of responsibility by attending meetings weekly, promoting school activities (such as homecoming), and participating in student council planning and events as much as possible. I wanted to become treasurer because I wanted a say in decisions that impacted our class. I wanted to be recognized as an individual that my peers could come to with questions and concerns.
It’s incredibly crazy to compare my life this year to where I was three-hundred and sixty-five days ago. As a senior in high school, I was so worried about the future and if I would survive, so to speak. Here I am now, experiencing college and gaining a valuable education in more than just a survival mode, but in a completely growth oriented mode of thriving. Campus involvement has been the best encourager for my education outside of your typical classroom setting. My main involvement is with Georgia Southern’s Office of Leadership and Community Engagement. I currently live in a Living Learning community on campus called Lead and Serve. This community is run through the Leadership Office which we call OLACE. I am housed with like minded individuals who have a passion for growing their leadership and doing community service. We have weekly meetings where we discuss social issues and prepare events for the local Statesboro community to get involved in and for us to serve. I am also invovled in an organization called Southern Leaders. Upon completion of this course and club, I will graduate with a leadership seal upon my diploma. Since being on my beautiful campus in south Georgia, I have completed over one hundred hours of community service. OLACE has also provided me the opportunity to take non-credit leadership classes in Self-Leadership, Collaborative Leadership, Living the Change and other various leadership classes I have taken advantage of. I have gained the knowledge of my leadership style and abilities and how to best use those when leading others. One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the Admission Department at Texas Wesleyan University.
Despite working on a thesis, taking social studies tutorials, attending four-hour long weekly drill practices, doing Physical Training at dawn, and holding leadership positions within the Air Force, my calling has been community service. Through Education 4 Action (E4A), a social justice organization, I have facilitated discussions on race relations, led rallies to bring union picked grapes to campus, and engaged speakers to discuss gender issues. Also, through the First-Year Urban Program, I led incoming first-years and introduced them to public service in Boston. I derived great satisfaction from these projects and realized I wanted to do more. Community service has become my passion and is an activity I want to pursue further.
When it comes to leading others it is a task/ position where you never stop learning. In order to be an effective leader you must adapt and continuous grow in your leadership role. Growing up I heard the quote by William Burroughs, when you stop growing you start dying. I believe this true because when you settle with what you have or know you tend to miss out on better opportunities.
Besides academics, fine arts and sports in school, I have attained leading roles in different groups. This year, I am the Spirit Leader of Student Council encouraging monthly goals and themes and assisting in school events. My experience in the student leadership program was interesting and informative. These are two descriptive words that stand out in my mind about the whole program. There were times in the student leadership program when I questioned myself about being part of the class, but I overcame this once I reflected on the many things that we have learned. From the guest speakers to the projects, the class has always kept me thinking.

No one is born a leader, leaderships skills come from life experiences, education and employment. Leadership is one of the most important facets in organizations. In most cases, leaders act with respect to organizational culture as well as the codes of conduct that determine the manner in which leaders relate with subordinates. Leadership entails the use of effective communication skills to get activities done in the workplace and to ensure that employees shelve their individual interests for the sake of their organizations’ shared targets. It is the role of leaders to ensure that consumers attain high quality products and services by making certain that members of their firms’ workforce are fully motivated to work effectively and utilize resources in an efficient manner (Bass, 22). With the increasingly sophisticated nature of the corporate world, leadership should not be based solely on the desire to control and coordinate affairs within the workplace, but leaders should also exhibit positive examples and continually monitor the changing trends in corporate governance to initiate the most relevant guidelines. Competitiveness can only be attained when leaders are in a position to set the right standards in their firms and coordinate affairs appropriately by understanding consumer and employee needs.
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions.
