Composure is one main thing that Athletes need in all sports.This is when somebody has something negative happen and they do not let it effect them.People should not be flustered from little things that happen in life.This is especially important when being a pitcher or quarterback or some kind of position that requires pressure and mental stability.Also when your play sports or work at a job its is important not to let the things you mess up on bother you. frustrated when I did not throw the a perfect pitch or a perfect strike. Getting frustrated did not help my pitching; all it did was make my pitching more wild. He told me that You people have good days and people have bad days.I guess I would get frustrated because I could not do it right and I would try it again and again and I would not be able to do it.He explained to me, “that if I wanted to be an athlete I would need to gain composure and learn to let the bad things go.”Also it looks very bad when your out on the field and you throw a little temper tantrum.It always embarrassed me when one my teammates would cry over silly things such as losing,striking out,dropping a ball, or miss tackles.These are all physical mistakes that's will happen in sports; it is the mental mistakes that matter.Composure is not only being able to let mistakes go, but being able keep your cool in a tight situation. Being able to come up clutch in the heat of the moment. People need composure in there life to help there day go smoother.This can also help with bullying;if somebody is being bullied and you show no reaction they those all there fire and motivation to bully you.
According to Weinberg and Gould (1995), mental practice is related with mental training to competition. Based on Murphy and Martin (2002), mental practice can be divide into two which is imagery techniques and verbal techniques. Imagery techniques can be visual rehearsal, kinesthetic rehearsal or emotional rehearsal. While verbal techniques are self talk and performance cues. Interview with Mr. Scott William in the Field of Sport Science My interviewee was Mr. Scott William, a well-known professor in the field of sport psychology. My discipline is sport science, and although William does not teach at the university, he has a sport psychology degree. He is a close friend of my father’s and my mentor. He has been working in sport and recreation industry for the last ten years before I even knew him; so it seemed like he had a good understanding of sport science and the use of drugs in sports.
Sports psychology can be defined as the study and application of the attitudes and behaviors of athletes (including team athletes) that impact (either positively or negatively) performance in sports or competitive settings. The goal of sports psychology is to help athletes and teams identify unhealthy attitudes and beliefs, apply mental toughness skills and peak performance strategies to perform at optimal levels (Cohn). Sports psychology is not recognized as a traditional field of practice offered by graduate programs; although, it is a recognized field of specific study under Kinesiology and Physical Education Programs. Sports psychology was first founded in 1920 by Carl Diem in Berlin, Germany. Later on, in 1925, sport psychology was brought to the U.S by Cloman Griffith. These early psychologists aimed to observe the effects of mental state on different factors of performance such as reaction time, tension, relaxation, and awareness (Haney). Due to the nature of sport, athletes will always be faced with the possibility of becoming injured. Empirical research has demonstrated that injury has a psychological impact on athletes (Quinn & Fallon, 1999). Indeed, sports practitioners often witness negative psychological impacts such as depression and in extreme cases suicidal tendencies in the injured athlete (Jevon & Johnston, 2003). Injuries have a dramatic impact upon an athlete’s life (Deutsch, 1985), Crossman (1997) interviewed athletic trainers and established that 47% of respondents believed that every injured athlete suffered psychological trauma. Walker, Thatcher and Lavallee (2007), explain there is a need to advance current knowledge of the way injured athletes psychologically respond, with deeper understanding it would be possible to aid rehabilitation professionals and help the athlete cope better psychologically. Psychological issues have an important role in the athletes ability to recover from injury (Arvinen-Barrow, Penny, Hemmings, & Corr, 2010), understanding how an athlete responds will have multiple practical implications. Ford and Gordon (1997) suggest that if an athlete experiences negative emotions then it will lead to non-complinace of the rehabilitation process. In order to understand athletes psychological responses to injury several frameworks have been suggested. These include the: integrated model of response to sports injury and rehabilitation (Wiese-Bjornstal, Smith, Shaffer, & Morrey, 1998), the Bio-Psychosocial model of sport injury rehabilitation (Brewer, Andersen, & Van Raalte, 2002), the staged-based grief response models (Kubler-Ross, 1969) and the stage model of the return to sport (Taylor & Taylor, 1997).

Young athletes account for about 4 million injuries a year in the U.S. according to an article published in the Los Angeles Times (2010). US Today reported that approximately 1.35 million student athletes’ injuries were severe enough to send them to the hospital emergency department. Athletic injuries range from the simple ankle strains and sprains to more serious injuries such as: fractures, contusions, abrasions, and even concussions. The unexpected injuries can cause great physical and emotional challenges for these student athletes. Besides having to deal with the physical and emotional stresses they must also have to deal with the financial turmoil the injuries triggered. Recovering from sport injuries require more than undergoing rigorous physical rehabilitation. Physical healing which can take months is quite different from the mental and emotional healing which can take years to recover from.
In sports, there are high levels of anxiety and arousal that may result in decreased performance and possible injury or fatigue.
In addition, athletes put a lot of pressure on themselves became they are always being assessed by their opponents, teammates, coaches and spectators. The athlete wants to push themselves so that they can please their audience and not looked down upon if they do something wrong. This may lead to increased competitive anxiety, and there are three areas associated with competitive anxiety. First is cognitive anxiety, which is constant thoughts about failure. Next is somatic anxiety, and this is the awareness of physical symptoms and increased negative arousal. Finally, prior to and during competitions self-confidence is usually an indicator of low competitive anxiety and is normally related to higher performance. Athletes seeking victory should be cautious of their inner perfectionism because if it turns negative it can lead to mental and physical health risks (Stoeber et al., 2007, ¶

Sports can be the greatest thing in the world or they can be the most embarrassing display of human interactions. Humans are one of the most amazing creatures on the planet. One of our greatest features is being respectful. Most of us are raised to respect someone, whether it be your parent or everyone, we will show respect. There is no greater place to show respect than on a sports field. On a sports field, stress levels are high and everyone is watching. It is very easy to lose your cool but a great athlete can keep their cool. Win or lose, the athlete will always show respect to the opponent. Not only is it good because it’s right but just think, athletes are on national television. Who watches sports? Everyone, including kids, watch sports.
Psychological state is the mental condition in which the qualities of state are relatively constant even though the state itself may be dynamic. A major part of this factor, I will look at imagery. This involves the athlete imagining themselves in an environment performing a specific activity using all of their senses (sight, hear, feel and smell). The image should have the athlete performing successfully and feeling satisfied with their performance. Studies have shown that all elite athletes intentionally employ imagery. With most sport psychologists systematically apply imagery in their work with athletes (e.g., Rushall and Lippman 1998; De Francesco and Burke 1997). Sports psychology is the study of how psychology influences sports, athletic performance, exercise and physical activity. Some sports psychologists work with professional athletes and coaches to improve performance and increase motivation. Other professionals use exercise and sports to enhance people’s lives and well-being. While finding ways to help athletes is certainly an important part of sports psychology, the application of exercise and physical activity for improving the lives of non-athletes is also a major focus.
Firstly, it is vital to note that anxiety, motivation, and concentration tremendously influence people's self-confidence and their performance at the long-run (Damon & Raedeke, P 188). Higher self-confidence reduces anxiety. The vice versa is also true. This is based on the fact that optimally confident sports people experience fewer doubts on self. Their worries reduce and give room for concentration in their activities. Additionally, motivated athletes are in a better position to strive towards achieving their goal. Motivation enables sports people to combat negativity and low self-esteem as they focus more on their goals other than obstacles. Why are mental skills so important to performance and why are they often neglected by coaches and athletes? Yogi Berra has been quoted as saying, "sport is 90% mental and 50% physical." You can question his mathematical savvy, but if you're an athlete, coach or fan, you can't question his wisdom. (Hacker, 2000) Many athletes understand that while developing oneself to their physical potential is a critical element in performance potential, it is often a deficit in our psychological game rather than errors in our physical performance that keep us from performing at optimum levels in practice, games or matches. Spud McKenzie, the Budweiser poster puppy, suggested that it is important to say when, but also emphasized the critical element of knowing “when to say when”. It is often the successful athlete has recognized what needed to be done and the unsuccessful athlete was unable to do so. As a consequence, it is not the physical talents or abilities that separate athletes and teams, or successful versus less successful performance, rather, the psychological dimension that most frequently explains a given sport outcome or individual performance. For this reason games are played. Prior to each contest, judgment could be made with regard to which team or individual is the “more highly skilled”. If games were decided on who is the most physically gifted and/or talented individuals or teams, it would prove to be an exercise in futility to compete. As a result, whether you are an athlete or a coach, mastering the mental game of sport will allow you to achieve a level of success as a competitor than you could otherwise not achieve by focusing exclusively on the physical side of sport.
