There are many responsibilities and obligations to being an effective manager. Communication, leadership, and managing conflict are fundamental skills for managing effectively. Management is important to every organization, and is essential for completing organizational goals and objectives. At the Hawthorne Municipal Pool, the skills needed for effective management were weak, and this caused an unfriendly and challenging environment for every employee. The first fundamental skill for effective management is communication. Although the managers at my job did communicate, it was not proficient and adept. Leadership is important because it is critical to guarantee employee loyalty, high performance, and most significantly, to take a company forward (Knight). At the Hawthorne Municipal Pool, the managers lacked strong leadership skills. An important part of being an effective leader is setting a good example. When managers are role models to other employees, they will scrutinize their good behavior (Caldwell 49). My managers on the other hand, were not good role models to other employees. During the beginning of the season, there was an incident when one of the assistant managers told a lifeguard to steal a drink from the food vender inside the facility. As the lifeguard was stealing the drink, the food vendor watched from the parking lot. The food vendor was very angry and yelled at the entire staff of the pool. The assistant manager was not penalized, only the lifeguard who actually stole the drink. However, the assistant manager failed to take blame of the entire situation. Effective leaders must set a good example and show passion, take the initiative, maintain focus, and accept responsibility. Leadership is crucial for effective management, and one of the steps for strong leadership is setting a good example. Leaders should lead by example. What a leader does and how they do it, serves as an example for others to follow. A leader’s behavior and actions are an important and effective way to influence the behavior of the people the lead. Leaders must treat other with dignity and respect. Leaders take responsibility for their actions, maintain their integrity by doing the right things and develop personable and commutative vision for their organizations. Leaders instill a sense of discipline; enforce organizational standards of the organization and do not turn a blind eye or overlook problems.
