TV commercials have been around almost since the creation of TV itself. But, the TV commercials we know today has little difference from those aired years ago. In fact, it wasn’t until the 1960’s when TV commercials were changed to those one to two minute spans of airtime that we come to know today. Since the very first commercial was showed during a baseball game in a local New York channel, TV commercials had gone some changes from the formation of the American association of advertising agencies to regulate TV commercials in 1948. (Bubba, 2003)
From what was just a scheme to promote a product in the local area to overpriced sponsorship rights until becoming one of the main forms of advertising, not just in the U.S. but in the whole world. Its success can be attributed to its creative and artistic styles and catchy slogans to promote different kind of products to the public.
This paper was primarily based on a study conducted by Kwak H. Zinkhan and Delorme in 2002. Their study focused on the effects of compulsive buying tendencies on attitude towards advertising. The study was able to conclude that compulsive buying tendencies of audiences create negative attitudes toward advertising. Although, it also suggested that heavy exposure to TV advertisements and TV shows reduced negative attitude but only in Korea and not in the U.S.
