Many people think fashion is just all about design or the clothing that you wear. In fact, the definition is “a popular way of dressing during a particular time or among a particular group of people” (Fashion). Well personally, I think that have got it wrong, and there are many more things about fashion that people do not realize. Consumerism and consumption play a huge role on what fashion is today and what goes into it, and not just about design or designers, but also socially and environmentally. Consumerism and consumption impact the social and environmental aspect of the fashion industry because of what people buy, why they buy things, what type of things they look for in terms of quality or brand, and also where they go to shop.
One way consumerism can affect the fashion industry is because of the type of things that people buy. They buy things for special occasions, holidays, or even just because. Most of the time they do not just stop there, and it is not even just clothes. They usually buy jewelry, shoes, and even bags or purses to match. Sometimes it can get a little out of control. Most designers, if not all, release a new line of clothing every year or season. Bringing out a new line of clothing every year or season encourages fashion enthusiasts to buy new clothes that they don't really need. While some people see this as harmless or helpful to the economy, others believe that it encourages mindless consumerism.
People buy things not necessarily because they need things, but because they want things. One reason why people may buy things they do not need is because of advertisements. Ads are always telling us that we need to buy and our eyes seem to be telling us that everyone has one and that you need one too. Commercials can be very convincing; they can make you feel that your life would be much simpler if you had that specific product. The fact that everybody seems to have it will just add on the pressure of not having it. The suggestions made by commercials are mostly to benefit the sellers not the consumers. It is important to consider when those advertisements are trying to influence you.
This book has opened a whole new perspective on advertising and the reasons we buy things and regret them later. Thinking that I have the urge for a McDonalds hamburger may feel real, or it might just be an elaborate, expensive advertising technique used to manipulate my buying behavior.
Fashion in the 21st century is a big business, as its production employs millions of people and generates billions of dollars in revenue. Fashion is everything to society and the media. The fashion industry has transformed into a necessity in the life of people. Everyone wants to look good, feel fabulous and feel as if we belong with everyone else. The envy and desire to wear certain things and look a certain way all come, from wearing the latest fashion handbags, accessories, dresses, shoes, and the list goes on. But, when is considering fashion into an individual’s life going too far to the extreme? Many do not consider the whereabouts of fashion materials and how the environment is affected by the mere existence of certain garments. Some may believe these objects grow on trees. But that is clearly not the case. Even though it would be nice. The fashion industry as a whole, has been notorious from green issues caused by their lack of sensitivity to the environment, conspicuous and unnecessary consumption of materials, encouraging an “throw-away” society and image issues that support women and young adults to look a certain way to feel “beautiful.” This is an issue that has increased over the past decades. Not just women, but men also feel the uncontrollable need to do whatever it takes to look like the celebrities they see on television and on the runways. The thought that the materials to make those desired items may have caused the life of animals or the destruction of mother nature does not come into mind. Countless people are concerned about conserving planet Earth and keeping it healthy. The fashion world has been targeted for many corruptions.

To begin with, I will look at each of the two subjects. Fashion is an extremely large subject with many sub-categories and can mean many different things, however in this essay I will take fashion to mean the popular clothing style. I will put emphasis on looking at high fashion as these are the leaders of their field. Fashion itself though, is not to be confused with clothing. Clothing is a part of fashion, but it is predominantly purely functional, for protection from different aspects of the environment. Fashion however, is primarily for image.
