Second Independent Reading Assignment
The title of my book is The Hobbit. It was written by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The main character is Bilbo Baggins. Some character traits that describe him are cautious and neat but, at the same time he can be sneaky and devious.
A minor character of my novel is Legolas. A character trait to describe Legolas would be reserved.
A dynamic character in the novel would be Bilbo Baggins because he starts off afraid of stepping out of his comfort zone. But, he takes a risk by agreeing to Gandalf and joining the journey to the Lonely Mountain and towards the end, he becomes more adventurous. In the book, Bilbo says, “‘Sorry! I don't want any adventures, thank you. Not today.’”
The setting of my novel is The Third Age of Middle-Earth, but it changes as they travel. Some places they travel to include Rivendell, Mirkwood, and the Lonely Mountain.

For example, Mirkwood makes the dwarves more humble and Bilbo more courageous. The tone of the book also changes within the settings.
The main conflict in my novel is that Thorin wants the Arkenstone from Smaug. This is the main conflict because it is what starts the whole journey. This type of conflict is knows as person vs. person.
A minor conflict is that Smaug terrorizes the villages and kills the people in them.
Three events that happen in order to make the main conflict worse are the fighting between dwarves and elfs, Smaug was killing people, and distrust between everyone.
The turning point in the novel is when the dwarves take back the Lonely Mountain.
The main conflict is resolved because Thorin dies. The Arkenstone was buried with
First, the author uses conflict to show what the characters have to overcome throughout the course of the story, such as Mrs. Baker forcing Holling to do chores at school and
The main conflict of the story is one that affects everyone. Samuel Westing puts 16 heirs up to the task to find out who murdered him, but no one can solve this horrendous crime, this is the main conflict of the story. This type of conflict is person versus person, where it is each heir against the other. All of the heirs have the problem and the problem is not
Explain how the conflict arises and go on to discuss in detail how the writer uses it to explore an important theme.
Every story has a conflict. Conflicts can be either internal or external. Internal conflicts occur within a character’s mind. The main character in Seventh Grade, Victor, deals with an internal conflict. External conflicts occur with a character and an outside force. The main character in Melting Pot deals with an external conflict. Both stories’ conflicts have winners.
J.R.R Tolkien's action packed, fantasy driven, inspiring novel The Hobbit shows the message that everyone must know, that you should never give up even if all hope seems to be lost. It shows setting of evergreen forests with villages scattered along the paths of which they must take and mountains just on the horizon. The read must go along with bilbo baggins a hobbit that does not realize there is more to him than just being a baggins and that he will live up to his family's name. Even after gandalf tells him that he will embark on a great adventure he still doesn’t believe he is anymore than just bilbo. Therefor this story is inspiring and shows that with the setting, character, and theme combined make this story a great read.
2) What is the main conflict in the book? Is it external or internal? How is this conflict resolved throughout the course of the book?
The main category of conflict is character vs self. This is when a character has an internal problem. They fight throughout the story to overcome that problem. The first example of character vs self is Elie. Throughout the story Elie is fighting himself to keep himself going. This is because of all the things happening around him. It drove him to the point where he almost gave up because his legs were
Heroes are present in many of the films produced today and these heroes generally follow both Campbell’s “Hero’s journey” and “Heroic Archetypes”. Some of Campbell’s tenets for a hero are that he must be called to a quest, he will face trials and tribulations, face temptation, complete a task, and eventually return home. The hero must also fit an archetype and its quest, fear, dragon, task, and virtue. Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is in fact one of the aforementioned heroes. Bilbo Baggins has always wanted an adventure and one day he is called on a quest to win back the Dwarfish kingdom of Erebor from the dragon, Smaug. Bilbo had not realized at the time of his departure that he was a hero and at first he even refused to go on the quest. Bilbo fits many of the tenets of the departure, initiation, and return of Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey” along with one of his archetypes. Joseph Campbell defines a hero as “someone who has given his life to something bigger than himself” and this is what Bilbo Baggins has done by accepting his quest to aid the Dwarves on their journey to the Lonely Mountain.
The Hobbit, written by John R. R. Tolkien, is a fantasy novel published on September 21, 1937. It was written as a prelude to the famous series, The Lord of the Rings, written seventeen years later. The Hobbit introduces the reader to an incredibly immersive fantasy world, that enriches the reader into its epic storyline. The story takes place in a land called Middle-earth, a land filled with enchanting surprises and magical wonders. It was the perfect playground for Tolkien to develop his main character Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo Baggins was a small hobbit, who unaware in the beginning would become a large role in the plot. It is through this character that Tolkien implemented the theme of heroism into the story. Bilbo’s unexpected adventure with the dwarves and the wizard gave him the opportunity to develop into the ultimate hero of Tolkien’s tale. Bilbo’s epic journey to become the hero of the story begins when Gandalf, the wizard, tells Bilbo of an expedition that would soon change his life forever.
Throughout history, men are taught that they are the head of the household. This idea is implicated in everyday society. At some point in history women were expected to submit to a men commands. One poem in particular that gives us an inside idea of what it was like growing up during the 1950s is called Sixth Grade written by Marie Howe. This poem speaks about sexual harassment that can be interpreted as six grade version of rape, innocence, and gender role. Howe uses limited use symbolism but crucial to connect her to her audience and to make a statement about where the origin of male violence originated.
Throughout The Hobbit by J.R.R tolkien, themes are portrayed and are necessary for the story line. The three main themes in the novel are the prevalence of greed, how Bilbo changes throughout the story and transforms into a hero and the conflict between good and evil. Greed can change anybody, no matter how heroic or brave they are. In the beginning bilbo is portrayed as quiet hobbit that likes to stay home but that all changes with a knock on the door.
Conflict #1: The first conflict is Person versus Nature. An example is when the woman was attacked by the crocodile, or when Sibia hit the crocodile in the eye. Conflict #2: The second conflict is Person versus Lifestyle. Sibia is living in a third-world country by how the character described what she owned and what Sibia was wearing, nothing but rags and was bare-footed in the winter.
Identify the important turning points of the story. Which would be the climax, the point that determines the outcome?
