Recently there has been an increase in movie adaptations of popular books. Novels from new teen fiction to classics are finding their way on screen. When the public hears their favorite book is being brought to life by Hollywood, excitement swells inside them. When the movie is revealed however the fans are let down because the story line has been altered in some way. Sometimes the sequence of events is out of order, an awesome scene is eliminated , or the cast just does not live up the characters in the original. The audience is constantly disappointed. They can't understand why Hollywood would mess up a story that is literally written for them. While many people believe that directors and screenwriters are unjustified in altering the movie, they actually have many reasons for making changes in the adaptation.
One of the leading reasons why screenwriters change up the story line of a novel is because the book is simply too long to include everything. If a movie followed the book exactly, the finished product would be much to long for an audience to view in one sitting. Writers will often take out parts that are irrelevant. Mario Puzo is the author of a popular novel called The Godfather. When the movie adaptation was release fans of the book noticed a few parts were missing. In most cases this would cause disappointment but many of the fans agreed that the movie was significantly improved by deleting useless scenes. Sometimes the writer will delete a scene that would make the main character unappealing to the audience. Gone With The Wind was changed for this reason. Critics say that Nicholas Sparks' novel The Notebook possessed intensity that the book did not, making the movie far better in some minds. Warm Bodies as a film was able to convey feeling that could not be put in words. This is caused by the fact zombie don't talk much and drag their words when they do speak. The audio of a movie conveys the speech better.
Until the death of all literature, books will continue to be turned into movies. These movies will continue to either make or break the original tales. No matter how hard a screenwriter tries he or she will never satisfy the audience because every reader, every fan has their own ideas about how something should happen. The writers will do their best but some changes have to be made. Every writer has a reason for the changes made.
Many time in our lives, we have seen the transformation of novels into movies. Some of them are equal to the novel, few are superior, and most are inferior. Why is this? Why is it that a story that was surely to be one of the best written stories ever, could turn out to be Hollywood flops? One reason is that in many transformations, the main characters are changed, some the way they look, others the way they act. On top of this, scenes are cut out and plot is even changed. Have you ever watched a movie and been dissatisfied, because it was not similar to its book? There are multiple movies that seem as if they are their own story, for they don't resemble their book at all. For example, “The Pit and the Pendulum.” by Edgar Allen Poe. He, himself would not approve of the film that follows his story. For one thing, the storyline was no where near to being like his book. Another reasoning is that he wrote based of one man not multiple people. And finally, he wouldn’t of approved of the art on the walls in the room with the pit and pendulum. These are the reasonings of why Poe would not appreciate the film.
The movie is, most likely, done well enough to intrigue its intended audience. It captured the theme and story line of the book. It falls short, though, when compared to the beautiful, sensitive and contemplative prose of Natalie Babbitt. One could only hope that a viewing of the film will lead the watcher to try the book and be delighted all the more.
Of the many changes made between the book and the movie, most were made to keep the audience interested in the story. Most people who watch TV don’t have a long attention span. Executives at NBC didn’t want to spend millions to produce a movie and then have nobody watch it. The screenwriters had to throw in some clever plot twists to keep people interested. Another reason the movie was different from the book was the material in the book was a little too racy for network TV. Take the ending, for example, nobody wants to see a grown man hang himself. This was a reason the producers had to change some material in the movie.
From a structural perspective, movies and novels appear as polar opposites. A film uses actors, scripts, and a set in order to create a visual that can grab and keep the attention of their viewers. However, an author strives to incorporate deeper meaning into their books. Despite these differences in media, 1984 and The Hunger Games present unique, yet similar ideas.
Whenever books are adapted for film, changes inevitably have to be made. The medium of film offers several advantages and disadvantages over the book: it is not as adept at exploring the inner workings of people - it cannot explore their minds so easily; however, the added visual and audio capabilities of film open whole new areas of the imagination which, in the hands of a competent writer-director, can more than compensate.
At this point, the readers create their own movie in a way. They will determine important aspects of how the character speaks, looks like, and reacts. Whereas, in the movie, the reader has no choice but to follow the plot laid out in front of them. No longer can they picture the characters in their own way or come up with their different portrayals. The fate of the story, while still unpredictable, was highly influenced by the way the characters looked, spoke, and presented themselves on screen.
As the case with most “Novel to Movie” adaptations, screenwriters for films will make minor, and sometimes drastic, adjustments to the original text in order to increase drama and to reach modern audiences. Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 film interpretation of The Great Gatsby followed the 1925 classic great plot quite accurately, with minor deviations. However, Luhrmann made some notable differences to the characters and settings of The Great Gatsby in order for the story to relate to the current generation and to intensity the plot
I believe the reason that, 'The Godfather', is such a great film is because it lets audiences decide whether they like the characters or not. Too many movies made about organized crime begin with some seemingly random act of violence. 'The Godfather', however, lets it be known from the start to judge the characters in the film based on what type of person they are instead of the criminal activities they may engage in.
The movie Warm Bodies is undoubtedly a movie that has its own interesting take. It is ideally a zombie - romantic movie whose script is based on a novel of the same title authored by Isaac Marion (2010). The main character leads are R; played by Nicholas Hoult, Julie; played by Teresa Palmer, Nora; played by Analeigh Tipton, and M; played by Rob Corddry. Warm Bodies is not particularly a comic movie, but is instead a carefully woven film that brings into perspective what a kind heart can achieve, and generally, the power of human beings over that which is thought of as evil.
Filmmakers are granted artistic license because filmmaking is an art and because film and literature are not always exactly compatible. There are many artistic components in the making of a film. The plot or the story behind the film is one the most important of these components. The makers of The Joy That Kills in making a film version of Kate Chopin's short story The Story of an Hour took artistic license to its limits. The entire story was dismantled and then completely reinvented. Many characters that are barely present or do not even appear in the story emerge to play important roles in the life of this young woman with heart trouble in the film. Louise along with the other characters has changed drastically in the transition to celluloid. The filmmakers in trying to make a more appealing movie have forgotten the story they were supposed to be telling.

The genre of my movie is a gangster film. My movie I chose was Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma.An update of the 1932 film, Scarface (1983) follows gangster Tony Montana and his close friend Manny Ray from their trip on the Cuban Boat Lift for refugees to their arrival in Miami. The Godfather is most notably one of the most prolific films of its time. This "gangster" film displayed many transformations of permeating color to give the viewer observable cues in its mise en scene that drew one right into the movie. The dramatic acting set the tone of the film with a score that lifted the viewer right out of their seat in many scenes. The directing and cinematography made The Godfather ahead of its time. The nostalgic feel of family importance and the danger of revenge lets us into the life of the Mafia. Even though no other techniques would have given the viewer a feeling of inside the mob like the mise en scene of the power the godfather held, the characters are reinforced literally and figuratively because the story views the Mafia from the inside out, and the cinematography of the film gives it a dangerous and nostalgic feel.
In the anime, Attack on Titan, the director is able to create and blend different master plots: vengeance by visual editing that places flashbacks at important moments inside the story and camera angles; hero’s quest by visual cuts and transitions from different character points of view; underdog by changing camera angles. Finally, but not least temptation through the use of sound editing with actions scenery and coloring. Narrative elements used by the director inside a film can change the master plot at any critical moment inside a story, elaborating a different story that can vary depending on our way of interpreting and analyzing the world around us. The director may have a general message that he wants to convey through narrative elements as it was previously stated, but we as the audience have the last word in what the film represents even though we obtain the main idea through the manipulation of the narrative elements used by the director.
Adaptation of any kind has been a debate for many years. The debate on cinematic adaptations of literary works was for many years dominated by the questions of fidelity to the source and by the tendencies to prioritize the literary originals over their film versions (Whelehan, 2006). In the transference of a story from one form to another, there is the basic question of adherence to the source, of what can be lost (Stibetiu, 2001). There is also the question of what the filmmakers are being faithful to or is it the novel’s plot in every detail or the spirit of the original (Smith, 2016). These are only few query on the issue of fidelity in the film adaptation.
