The Godfather is most notably one of the most prolific films of its time. This "gangster" film displayed many transformations of permeating color to give the viewer observable cues in its mise en scene that drew one right into the movie. The dramatic acting set the tone of the film with a score that lifted the viewer right out of their seat in many scenes. The directing and cinematography made The Godfather ahead of its time. The nostalgic feel of family importance and the danger of revenge lets us into the life of the Mafia. Even though no other techniques would have given the viewer a feeling of inside the mob like the mise en scene of the power the godfather held, the characters are reinforced literally and figuratively because the story views the Mafia from the inside out, and the cinematography of the film gives it a dangerous and nostalgic feel. The beginning scene was actively engrossed with low-key lighting or "dark look" that gave off an overcast to understand the power Don Corleone possessed over the individuals he was speaking with. According to David Konow (2014) "As Willis recalled in the book Masters of Light,That technique or that approach to the movie visually just came out of a thought process. And the process, in my mind, was based on evil; it was based on the soul of the picture. The wedding outside had a very sunny, almost Kodachromey, 1942 kind of feel to it. Then when we cut inside the house with Brando, it was very down and very ominous…so it was a very simple philosophy. However, the overall look of The Godfather was a kind of forties New York grit." The lighting used in The Godfather helped to implore the nostalgic feel of the movie. Although it was made in the 80 's Willis ' use of his new techniques changed the lighting in movies to come and placed the viewer in the midst of the 1940 's mafia
If the name Serpico sounds familiar, it may be remembered from a movie. Frank Serpico is portrayed in the 1973 movie, “Serpico” starring Al Pacino. This movie may be loved by many but it’s important to realize that its characters are real men and the story line is very real. Although most police officers work very hard to do their jobs within ethical standards of the law, it is often not hard to find some type of corruption within a department.
The movie, The Outsiders, starts with the Curtis parents on their weekly, Saturday evening drive to the baking store to buy some ingredients for their boys’ favorite Sunday morning, breakfast treat: chocolate cake. The Curtis boys love their chocolate cake for Sunday breakfast not only because they love it, but also because they appreciate how hard their parents have to work to save the monies necessary for the morsels that put smiles on their faces!
Film Noir was extremely trendy during the 1940’s. People were captivated by the way it expresses a mood of disillusionment and indistinctness between good and evil. Film Noir have key elements; crime, mystery, an anti-hero, femme fatale, and chiaroscuro lighting and camera angles. The Maltese Falcon is an example of film noir because of the usage of camera angles, lighting and ominous settings, as well as sinister characters as Samuel Spade, the anti-hero on a quest for meaning, who encounters the death of his partner but does not show any signs of remorse but instead for his greed for riches.
The film “Goodfellas,” directed by Martin Scorsese, is loosely based on the true story of mobster Henry Hill’s career with the mafia. The main characters in this movie are Henry Hill, played by Ray Liota, who was part of the mafia, James Conway who was a stickup/hit man, played by Robert De Niro, and Tommy DeVito, played by Joe Pesci, who was another gangster. At the beginning of the film a young Hill is seen admiring the gangsters who spend time across the street at one of their establishments. Hill can be heard talking about how much he admired gangsters, and that all he ever wanted to be was a gangster. Throughout the movie the audience gets a sense of what life as a gangster in the criminal underworld might have been like.
In film, many times the auteur often uses the medium to convey a moral or make a social commentary. In the case of Howard Hawkes’s original version of Scarface, there is more being portrayed through the characters then merely the story. Hawkes makes a statement about the façade of organized crime, and the farce of the American Dream.
Like most things captured on film for the purpose of being marketed, the richness of gangster life, with sex, money, and power in surplus, is glorified, and thus embraced by the audience. And as a rule, if something works Hollywood repeats it, ala a genre. What Scarface and Little Caesar did was ultimately create a genre assigning powerful qualities to criminals. Such sensationalism started with the newspapers who maybe added a little more color here and there to sell a few more copies, which is portrayed in Scarface’s two newspaper office scenes. Leo Braudy denounces genres as offending “our most common definition of artistic excellence” by simply following a predetermined equation of repetition of character and plot. However, Thomas Schatz argues that many variations of plot can exist within the “arena” that the rules of the genre provide.
Goodfellas is one of Martin Scorsese’s most popular and elaborate films. From the freeze-frames to the famous long take at the Copacabana. Everything done behind the camera seems to bring this film together as a whole. Even though the film can be dated back to the 90’s with the tacky costumes and décor, the story of the film is timeless. This is a movie that has already stood the test of time and will continue to do so for generations to come. Goodfellas is truly one of the most remarkable films of all time.
Often regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, Citizen Kane written and directed by Orson Welles is a classic film that defied the conventional styles of the Hollywood Cinema. Welles was committed to the Mise-En-Scene of his movies by using his characters, props, settings, and even the camera to tell the story of his characters. The Lighting, the camera shots, and the character 's actions to depict the life of Charles Foster Kane. The Mise-En-Scene of this narrative creates a film that is ahead of it’s time and a genius innovation to the cinema.
The Godfather is the “dark-side of the American dream story” (Turan, pp2). The film follows the practices of a fictional Italian mafia family, the Corleone’s. Though most Americans do not condone the practices of the Italian mafia, they cannot deny that Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is a cinematic masterpiece. This film gave insight to a mysterious way of life that the average person does not have knowledge of. As the audience is educated about the mafia they also are introduced to many stereotypes.

This vengeful spirit seems to act more like a deadly disease rather than how it is traditionally suppose to act. Another goes that goes against traditional Japanese folktales is Takeo’s ghost which appears near the end of the movie. In many Japanese folktales, the ghosts of a male are usually seen as nonthreatening and often are seen as guides. Many of the male ghosts are often from men who have fallen in battle and then later roam the earth grieving over their death. They have also been know to help out others who are on a journey and act as more of a warning than as a angered spirit.
The film that I have chosen to analyze is “The Purge”. “The Purge” is a 2013 American horror film directed by James DeMonaco. It was released on June 7, 2013, to mixed reviews. I will be analyzing “The Purge” by looking at conflict theory, class division, the importance of the ethnicity of each individual character, and the government’s overall political and economic agenda. In brief, I believe that Purge night takes place because of Conflict theory, due to political and economic agendas.
This movie starts off as Jordan Belfort, the main character in the movie, losing his job as a stockbroker in Wall Street. After losing his job, he goes and gets a job in a Long Island brokerage room. In the brokerage room, he sells penny stocks. Thanks to him being aggressive in his selling skills, he was able to make a profit. With the new income, he gives his wife a bracelet and she asked him why doesn’t he go after the people that can afford to lose money, not the middle-class people or lower income people. That is when he gets the idea to get a lot of young people and train them to become the best stock brokers.
On December 8, 1941 which was the day after when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, the Casablanca movie was produce the day after. The famous movie Casablanca, is considered one of the greatest movies of all time because of the time when the movie actually took place and also the characters. The movie was made during the time when the Nazi were reaching the zenith of their powers. This movie is actually real, the thing that happened in the movies were some of the most realist things that occur in those days. Ex patriots who happened to have left their countries not because they wanted to leave but because they were forced to by war that was going on. Don and Michael are both powerful Godfathers that vary in many ways. Don became a Don because it was all that he really knew and he needed to take care of his family. On the other hand, Michael had a choice. In The Godfather, Michael rises to power as the head of the family. Michael’s character endures an intense change as the film goes on. At the beginning of the film, Michael seems to be a moral and an upright character, but that changes. Power is a major theme in The Godfather, and Michael and Don both pertain to this theme of power. Corruption is closely linked to that of power also, which is seen throughout this film.
These two movies can be viewed as a single movie much like The Godfather movies but watching two of them as one movie is more predominant. Watching them like this allows us to enjoy the invigorating spectacle of the two films' bold balancing act, as on the one hand there stands the optimism and hopefulness of the more conventionally romantic Before Sunrise, while on the other hand we witness the often savage skewering of same in the much bleaker and despairing sequel. The two films are more rewarding when consumed as one because we observe the counter-development of these films, as they effectively switch positions and the outlooks over the
