It is impossible to deny the similarities of characters, setting, cinematography and more, between The Return of the Secaucus Seven by John Sayles and The Big Chill by Lawrence Kasden. This paper will focus on the similarities and differences in the themes between the two movies. Specifically, focusing on relationships, aging, and death. The two films differ in many aspects but parallel in other ways. Impacts of these themes within the two movies are important to recognize because they are relevant to everyday life, relatable, and realistic.
In conclusion, details involving the characters and symbolic meanings to objects are the factors that make the novel better than the movie. Leaving out aspects of the novel limits the viewer’s appreciation for the story. One may favor the film over the novel or vice versa, but that person will not overlook the intense work that went into the making of both. The film and novel have their similarities and differences, but both effectively communicate their meaning to the public.
Nosferatu a Symphony of Horror and Sunrise: A song of two humans, are silent films directed by F.W. Murnau made in the 1920's. Sunrise tells the story of two young lovers that rekindle their romance, and Nosferatu is a horror adaptation of Bram Stoker’s, Dracula. While they differ in genre, both are similar in that they consist of a young couple that encounter a threatening situation. The element of space becomes an interesting aspect relevant to both films as it is used to foresee the events of what is to come in the plot. In Noseferatu, enclosed spaces evoke the feelings of uneasiness and no escape. In Sunrise, it is the open space that provides hope for the romance of the couple. The surroundings in the given space relate to the character's internal selves and their futures. In Noseferatu, Orlok who symbolizes death, materializes from empty spaces visualizing the nature of death to follow. In Sunrise, the couple's constant complexity of emotions resembles the chaotic places they must encounter in order to fall back together. The plot in both films revolves around a particular evil whose power eventually weakens. Orlok's presence proves to be stronger and more intimidating through distance, whereas the woman from the city is most influential when she is in close and physical proximity. These
If the name Serpico sounds familiar, it may be remembered from a movie. Frank Serpico is portrayed in the 1973 movie, “Serpico” starring Al Pacino. This movie may be loved by many but it’s important to realize that its characters are real men and the story line is very real. Although most police officers work very hard to do their jobs within ethical standards of the law, it is often not hard to find some type of corruption within a department.
An obvious difference in these films is that the 1931 version played to a Depression audience and that the Coppola version played to a modern audience. (I am being extremely careful because, obviously, the 1931 audience was modern in 1931; however, we like to think of ourselves as being more modern than past generations. There are differences in the audiences which viewed the respective versions in their time, and I hope to prove this point as the paper unfolds.)
The star-crossed lovers from both books highlight a love that grows stronger as they fight through the obstacles that are placed on their journey together. The past that affects the female characters in the future, the boundaries/rules set for each of the lovers, the first time they speak to each other, and lastly the difficult and painful decisions that are made. The circumstances in each book should have left the lovers standing alone, away from the pain, however instead they stand there undefeated as a couple with the power to crash but the ability to pick each other up again.

Love is something that humans have sought and desired for a long time and to us it seems as if love has been around since our dawning. We express this love in many different forms. We express love through writing, gift giving, art, and cinematic productions. But at what point does the expression of love lose its value? The Best of Me and Before Sunrise are examples of how one can go about expressing the meaning of love. They are both cinematic productions laced with the woes of love, but the way these two stories unfold before the viewer are subtly and, to some, even strikingly different. Before Sunrise veers off the well beaten path of clichéd love stories and rides on newfangled roads whereas The Best of Me stays in line with what is usually churned out in adaptation to a Nicholas Sparks novels. The Godfather is the “dark-side of the American dream story” (Turan, pp2). The film follows the practices of a fictional Italian mafia family, the Corleone’s. Though most Americans do not condone the practices of the Italian mafia, they cannot deny that Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is a cinematic masterpiece. This film gave insight to a mysterious way of life that the average person does not have knowledge of. As the audience is educated about the mafia they also are introduced to many stereotypes.

The genre of my movie is a gangster film. My movie I chose was Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma.An update of the 1932 film, Scarface (1983) follows gangster Tony Montana and his close friend Manny Ray from their trip on the Cuban Boat Lift for refugees to their arrival in Miami. There are many similarities between different texts in literature as well as film. Many movies you see are alike. However, every one of them has their own perspective on the content that is presented. Two movies may have an almost identical plot line, but they change the way you view it. For example, there are many movies made about the well known story, Cinderella. They all follow one plot line; a girl’s father dies, and has to live with her wicked stepmother and step sisters whom she does all the dirty work for, a “fairy godmother” helps her sneak out to go to a dance but has to be back by 12:00 so her stepmother does not find out. The girl goes to the dance, meets her true love who just happens to be the guy every other girl is dying to have. She runs out before the clock strikes 12:00 and loses an item of hers that her true love just so happens to find. He uses it to find the girl and they live happily ever after. The Godfather is most notably one of the most prolific films of its time. This "gangster" film displayed many transformations of permeating color to give the viewer observable cues in its mise en scene that drew one right into the movie. The dramatic acting set the tone of the film with a score that lifted the viewer right out of their seat in many scenes. The directing and cinematography made The Godfather ahead of its time. The nostalgic feel of family importance and the danger of revenge lets us into the life of the Mafia. Even though no other techniques would have given the viewer a feeling of inside the mob like the mise en scene of the power the godfather held, the characters are reinforced literally and figuratively because the story views the Mafia from the inside out, and the cinematography of the film gives it a dangerous and nostalgic feel.
On the other hand, the 1983 version of Scarface was filmed in color. The script was changed to adapt to its more to its current time. This being said, the remake film soundtrack consisted of all 80s music of course. The reboot version of Scarface focused more on the Cuban immigration and drug trafficking taking place in Miami, Florida during this time. Being in quest of revenge among one's enemy is not always the best decision. The poem, “Viva la Vida” is about an deposed king who had everything in his hand. He made a huge mistake and lost everything he had ever owned, while the people he used to treat like dirt, waited for his beheading. He used his power to an extreme just to keep his role as king. By the end of the poem all he had was faith in his will, it was the only thing he had left. The protagonist(Edmond Dantes) in The count of Monte Cristo is the same as the overthrown King in “Viva La Vida”. Edmond Dantes let his emotions get the best of him so his set out for revenge on all of his enemies. He hurt himself, and the one he fell in love with (Mercedes) because he took advange of his power. Both characters end up regreting what they’ve done and tries to turn back to God for glory. The Count of Monte Cristo and the poem (Viva la Vida) both convey the fact that recrimination can get the best of you. Power is an enemy to human mortality. It is so ascendant that it leads to tremendous trouble and insane ideas in one's head. In “Viva La Vida” and The Count of Monte Cristo, the writer's’ use of hyperbole, and imagery to portray the idea that Abusive power can cause destruction because of their vulgar ability.
