Filmmakers are granted artistic license because filmmaking is an art and because film and literature are not always exactly compatible. There are many artistic components in the making of a film. The plot or the story behind the film is one the most important of these components. The makers of The Joy That Kills in making a film version of Kate Chopin's short story The Story of an Hour took artistic license to its limits. The entire story was dismantled and then completely reinvented. Many characters that are barely present or do not even appear in the story emerge to play important roles in the life of this young woman with heart trouble in the film. Louise along with the other characters has changed drastically in the transition to celluloid. The filmmakers in trying to make a more appealing movie have forgotten the story they were supposed to be telling.
Louise has turned into a little girl that must depend on man to take care of her. Louise pleads with Brently to go to the gardens of Paris. She begs like a child begging for something that is impossible to give. Brently must lock her up in their home to protect her from her curiosity and need to see the world. The filmmakers do not give her the commonsense to realize the dangers she would face in seeing Paris and all the other places she would like to visit. Louise remains the little girl in the flashbacks and Brently has replaced her dead father as the soul keeper of her world. Brently must protect her from the world and herself. She is made to be completely dependent on him from her everyday needs to being her only window into the outside world. There are no female positions of authority in her life. Aunt Joe is left in the background and Marjorie must ultimately answer to Brently. Louise is left to see men as the only authority in her life. She herself as a woman must feel powerless to the will of men. Brently even chooses the destinations of their daily visits to far off and exotic places. These excursions are Louise's only escape. Brently is made to be her captor and savior at the same time. Her fate is completely dependent in his yet she is given no control of either.
Why do directors choose to stay faithful to or depart from a text when they are producing a film? Many directors choose to either alter or maintain literary elements such as characters, plot, and resolution from a text. The presence or lack of these specific features affects the audience. For instance, in the story “The Monkey’s Paw”, a classic short horror story written by W.W. Jacobs, and its accompanying film, the similarities and differences in the characters, plot, and resolution have an effect on the readers and viewers.
Both Nora and Louise's lives have been shaped and molded to conform to their husbands' wishes. At the time these stories took place, it was basically unheard of for women to assert their beliefs or to act upon their ideas. As a result, Louise was forced to succumb to the role of an obedient wife, in order to abide by the norms of society. This is apparent because of the way she reacts when she learns of a false rumor regarding her husband's sudden death. While in deep thought, and staring out the window by herself, she has a sudden realization of complete happiness and total freedom. Brently opens the door at the end of the story, and Louise is surprised to find her husband alive. She was shocked and died of a heart attack. Ironically, the doctor declares “she died of heart disease--of the joy that kills” (Chopin). In the movie we saw, it was different. Louise was kept in the house because Brently is afraid that she might die or because he is afraid that seeing the world could give her an idea to rebel against him.
Louise left the country to go stay with Albert Hardy and his family in the city, so she could attend school. In The Story of an Hour Kate Chopin gives a very inside look at her feelings about marriage, female independence, and the human will. The first description that Chopin gives of Louise (the main character of the story) is her heart trouble. The way that it is suggested, gives the reader reason to believe that the ailment may not only be physical but also mental. Louise's sister, Josephine and Richards treat Louise with great care as though she is fragile. They are afraid that breaking the news of her husband's death to her may be harmful to her condition. When Louise hears the news of her husband's death, Chopin tells us that she "wept with wild abandonment." This apparently was not the expected response. This is known, because Chopin tells the reader that many women would have received the message and been so paralyzed by it that they would not have been able to show emotion. Coming to the end of this class I have learned a lot about what it takes to make a piece of literature leave you feeling a certain way. A lot goes into setting up a atmosphere in a story because you are not really seeing it in front of your face so you must imagine it. The author wants you to imagine a certain scene and feel a certain way through their words and descriptions. An important component to making a reader understand the atmosphere and visualize the scene is by the setting. Setting is where a specific event is taking place.
