The four contemporary approaches to management are sociotechnical systems, quantitative management, organizational behavior and systems theory. Each approach is unique, and each approach can be used in many types of management.
The sociotechnical systems theory looks at two things. The social system in the work environment and the technical system in the work environment. The combination of these two things can lead to an organizations effectiveness in keep customers satisfied. The social system consists of the organizations workers and the technical system looks the workers training, tools and knowledge.
Quantitative management is another approach to management. This style of management puts a focus on mathematical and statistical analysis. Most managers cannot rely on statistics and math alone to make decisions so this approach to management is often used as a tool to make decisions rather than the be all, end all solution to a problem (Quote Book Here). The sociotechnical approach works well in the internal environment because it’s focus is on the workers and their tools, training and knowledge. The quantitative approach works well in all three environments. Since it pulls and analyzes all types of data it can be used as a tool to develop and improve all three environments. The organizational approach puts its focus on the behaviors of the employees of the organization, so it fits in best with the internal environment. Systems theory looks at an organization as an open system which involves all three environments. It can be effectively used to consider the internal, external and macro-environments because all affect the organization. All the approaches have their place in a system and an organization would be best suited to always consider each in their analysis of
Sociocracy Theory is mainly used for the eremging organization that addresses its needs and interest through a purpose and has three main components to their purpose which is a vision, mission, and aim (Buck, 2014, P. 4). The vision includes the organizational values and the why of the purpose. The mission is how the organization looks at the vision in order to be motivational. The aim is what connect the organization to its clients it can be a description of products and services (Buck, 2014).

These emerging theories have enabled managers to appreciate new patterns of thinking, new ways of organising, and new ways of managing organisations and people. Over the years these different theories have enabled the study of trends that have taken place in the management field. The major management viewpoints- which include the classical, behavioural and contingency approaches- have assisted in the formation of the contemporary twenty-first century management theory and techniques (S. C. Certo & S. T. Certo, 2006). Although, there are significant differences among all these approaches, they seem to be unified by the efforts of improving an organisation’s efficiency in terms of proper human resources management. Furthermore, the dissimilarities seen in these approaches are due to the ever-changing organisations and environments which demand new management practices and techniques be applied to maintain the efficiency of an organisation.
In today’s corporate world a manager to be affective must be able to incorporate the four functions of management (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling) into his or her management techniques. Managers who fail to implement the four functions have a greater chance of being unsuccessful in accomplishing the primary outcome for the project or task. Thus, generating an inferior product.
There are several theories that examine an organization and it’s approach to managing work in an effort to develop efficiency and increase production. Two classical approaches to management are Taylor’s scientific management theory and Weber's bureaucratic management theory. Both men are considered pioneers of in the study of management.
This research has asked us to look into three different styles of management and find real life examples of companies or individuals who have or are currently using such styles of management. To begin we will take a look into the use of an autocratic style of management versus a participative. In this portion we will look into Leona Helmsley and her chain of hotels. Once this potion is completed, our next section will be looking into a centralized style of management versus a decentralized style. In this section of the research, we will be looking into Apple Inc and how they have built an empire with a centralized style of managing philosophy. Finally, in the final section of the research we will be taking a look at how Google has created an informal environment in which employees have direct access to executives and have the ability to share thoughts and ideas that are taken serious and to the heart.
Over recent years companies have become less dependent on paper and more dependent on technology. Take American Honda Motors for example; the Davenport Parts facility recently converted computer systems to more efficiently manage its inventory. Prior to its new system months of preparation was needed in order to ensure a smooth change over. Without the four basic functions of management all working together success would not have been possible.
Successfully running a business or organization requires mastering the four primary functions of managing. The four functions of management are planning, organization, leading and controlling. Over the past hundred years management has continuously been evolving. There have been a wide range of approaches in how to deal with management or better yet how to improve management functions in our ever changing environment. From as early as 1100 B.C managers have been struggling with the same issues and problems that manager’s face today. Modern managers use many of the practices, principles, and techniques developed from earlier concepts and experiences.
