Renaissance means rebirth, which came from a revival of interests in art and literature. Trumpets changed constantly to expand their sound and accessibility to play. During the Renaissance age, trumpets had the biggest change in the types of trumpets made, the uses for them, and their abilities.
There are five main types of trumpets made in the Renaissance era: natural trumpet, flat trumpet, S-shaped trumpet, tower trumpet, and the slide trumpet. Trumpets, in the renaissance era did not have developed holes, crooks, or valves yet, which limited the notes available for play. The natural trumpet was the beginning of the trumpet history in the Renaissance. It could only play notes of the harmonic series, which were sharp or major keys. To change pitches, you would have to change out parts of the trumpet. Next, a new type of trumpet was made that could play in flat or minor keys called a flat trumpet. This extended the range of notes available to play. The S-shaped trumpet was longer than the other trumpets because of additional tubing. This trumpet folded upon itself forming an “S-shape”. It

When trumpets were first used, they were set apart from anything that would suggest “music”. They were commonly used for signaling a message or instructions over a great distance. These signals would consist of a series of sounds or rhythmic patterns. Trumpets eventually would announce when royalty arrived such as noble employers, kings or rulers, and ambassadors. They were used for wartime maneuvers, peaceful periods, and tournaments. Ultimately when the trumpet’s ability to play more notes increased, they were finally considered an “art music”. Trumpets now played in ceremonies and celebrations as a part of musical groups. The uses for trumpets started out minimal but increased immensely with the ability to play more notes during the Renaissance

The clarinet is a woodwind instrament consisting of a cylindrical wood, metal, or ebonite pipe with a bell-shaped opening at one end and a mouthpiece at the other end, to which a thin reed is attached. The clarinet has five different sections, the mouthpiece, the barrel, the upper section, the lower section, and the bell. The length of the entire instrument is 60 cm long. The mouthpiece section consists of a slotted cylinder, to which a reed is attached by a metal clamp called a ligature. The mouthpiece plugs into the next section which is a barrel. The barrel is simply a connecting cylinder to which the mouthpiece and the upper section plugs into. The upper section is a cylindrical pipe consisting of 4 holes and 9 keys placed in different locations along the pipe. On the back of the pipe there is a hole and a key that is used by the thumb. The lower section plugs into the upper section and is also connected via a special bridge key. This piece consists of 3 holes and 8 keys. On the inward facing side of the pipe, there is a protruding piece of metal called a thumb rest, which supports the entire clarinet. The bell plugs into the lower section. It consists of a cylinder that flares out into a bell shape and ends the clarinet.
Though the formation of our modern-day Concert Band does not date back quite as far as our modern-day Wind Ensemble, the extent of events, groups, composers, and advancements is quite similar. The evolution of the Concert Band dates back to the French Revolution. Large bands, full of unique instruments and amateur musicians, were required to play at festivals and ceremonies. Similar to the evolution of the Wind Ensemble, the Concert Band is derived from military purposes. Instruments, such as the trumpets, horns, and drums, were often used for signaling. In contrast to Wind Ensemble musicians, these Concert Band musicians never played their instruments for military enjoyment. The Concert Band musicians primarily played instruments to signal to the guards and villages. There were a few unique instruments, however, that were desired to play a military tune. These instruments include instruments such as a flute or bagpipe. Throughout the Middle Ages, this difference in military preference led to different job opportunities. For example, a cavalry company required trumpets, horns, and trumpets. On the other hand, foot soldiers would hire flute and bagpipe
From the Baroque to around 1700, the chalumeau began to come to light and was the instrument that leads to the creation of the clarinet. The chalumeau is also a single-reed instrument. A cylindrical body with a total of eight tone holes, seven on the front of the instrument, and one on the back called the speaker key. The speaker key is the modern day equivalent of the register key on the clarinet. The chalumeau began to appear in music during the 1630s, originating in France and would soon spread into Germany by the latter half of the Baroque.
They had many different configurations, 2, 3, 4,5,6,7 or 8 holes. The flute we used in class is 6 holes, and we also saw many different flutes in class, someone smaller, someone larger, someone with 3 holes, etc. The oldest flutes we have were made from wing bones of a Griffon Vulture [1] and a Whooper Swan [2], as well as one
As a musician one of the most frequent questions that I receive is, “What instrument do you play?” When I answer, the look on the persons face is a face of confusion. “What’s a euphonium?” they ask. This occurs not only to me, but to every euphoniumist who is ever asked this very question. Although the word euphonium is foreign to most people, the instrument is not. The euphonium, with its beautiful rich tone is the chief tenor soloist in the military and concert band. The euphonium is a conical-bore, baritone voiced brass instrument that derives its name from the Greek word euphonos. When separated, eu means well or good, and phonos means of good sound. Therefore euphonos means well sounding. In this paper I will discuss the history of the euphonium and its use in the world of music today.

The History of the Harpsichord The harpsichord was the most important keyboard instrument in European music history from the 16th through the first half of the 18th century. It originated and evolved from the monochord, which is a primitive instrument invented in the sixth century BC by Pythagoras. Their precise origins are a matter of debate, although it is known that they have existed since the 15th century; there are clear references of the harpsichord in the literature of that period. After several stages in the evolution of the monochord, including the organistrum, the bowed monochord, the chekker, and the keyed monochord, the clavichord finally came into existence.
Warfare and weaponry have been a key part of development and power for areas of the world for years, and has affected, and decided the fate of the world for years on end. Without warfare and weaponry there would be a lack of advancement, and culture. The Renaissance alone was already influential, and had affected the world today through many subjects such as art, religion, mathematics, science, and much more. People tend to forget how much warfare and weaponry advancements happened during the Renaissance. Renaissance warfare notably influenced the old English when it comes to weaponry. The Renaissance had developed more powerful and useful weapons, more strategized methods of warfare, and had involved many areas of the world through weaponry.
