Both Doc C and D are about reason and experimenting. In Doc C there are two Universes, one called the Geocentric Universe by Ptolemy and the Heliocentric Universe by Copernicus. Geocentric means ‘earth-centered’ and heliocentric means ‘sun-centered.’ Ptolemy’s Universe was made up while Copernicus relied on reasons. In Doc C it states, “Ptolemy (tol-eh-mee) was a Roman astronomer who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, shortly after the time of Jesus. He developed a theory of the universe that was adopted by most scholars during the Middle Ages. The Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus lived from 1473 to 1543, Relying mostly on mathematics and observation, he developed a different understanding of the universe.” The Church was upset about Copernicus because they believed that the sun revolves around Earth but they were proved wrong. In Doc D there are two pictures of the human body one that is based on Zodiac signs by Johann Regiomontanus and the other is based on a real human body by Andreas Vesalius. In Doc D it states, “A woodcut called ‘Zodiac Man’ from a book by German astronomer Johann Regiomontus, 1512 and a woodcut from the anatomy book On the Makeup of the Human Body by Belgian physician Andreas Vesalius, 1543.” The ‘Zodiac Man’ is what people believed in the Middle Ages and the zodiac signs controls different parts of the body. The human body by Andreas Vesalius was based on his research and experiments. For example, the constellation of the stars called Aries the Ram controlled the head. The illustration on the right was based on the research done by Andreas Vesalius, who dissected human corpses to better explain the human body.” This shows how the Renaissance changed the view of the world because of reasons, facts, and
As the Reconstruction Era ended, the United States became the up and coming world power. The Spanish-American war was in full swing, and the First World War was well on its way. As a result of the open-door policy, England, Germany, France, Russia, and eventually Japan experienced rapid industrial growth; the United States decided to pursue a foreign policy because of both self- interest and idealism. According to the documents, Economic self- interest, rather than idealism was more significant in driving American foreign policy from 1895 to 1920 because the United States wanted to protect their foreign trade, property and their access to recourses. While the documents also show that Nationalistic thought (idealism) was also crucial in driving American foreign policy, economic Self- interest prevailed.
In the colonization period, the urge to conquer foreign territories was strong, and many lands in the Western Hemisphere were conquered. With the colonization of these areas, a mercantilist relationship was formed between the conquered civilization and the maternal country. A major part of this was the restriction of exportation of native resources only to the mother country as well as the banning of trading with colonies of other countries. In turn, there was an increasing in the number of smuggling activities during the time. According to a British sailor named William Taggart in 1760, the illegal smuggling of goods into these areas had a positive impact because it brought prosperity to the people in Monte Christi, as there were only one hundred poor families. Likewise, Dominica governor John Orde praised the trading because it created prices much lower than with its maternal country. However, British admiral David Tyrell, Roger Elletson, Dominica governor John Orde, and a 1790 Bahaman newspaper report all had similar views on the harmful effects and corruptness present in smuggling. Despite this, physician George Lipscomb and British Lieutenant Governor Thomas Bruce had neutral opinions on the matter, and only stated what they witnessed in the process.

A period of intellectual excitement and a word that indicates “rebirth” or “revival” is what we know today as the Renaissance era. “For success, attitude is equally as important as ability.” (Walter Scott). Valley Forge was a fort for the patriots to stay as they fought in the revolutionary war. Britain sent many soldiers and the some of the colonists adapted scarlet fever. Those colonists did not know that their own soldiers would fight those British soldiers. In 1775, George Washington took control and made an army of patriots called the Continental Army. A year later the Declaration of Independence was written. This gave the colonists something extra to fight for. Located near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Valley Forge housed many sick soldiers. The conditions were poor and many soldiers were miserable, but a great deal still kept their positive attitudes. If I
The Renaissance (A Very Short Introduction) written by Jerry Brotton has been illustrated into six illustrations: A global Renaissance, The humanist script, Church and state, Brave new worlds, Science and philosophy and Rewriting the Renaissance. Since this book is a history book, it is quite tough to read. This book is all about the past history which is related to the Renaissance. Honestly, I do not even have clear understanding on what is called “Renaissance” until I read this book. On page 9, under the subtitle of “Where and when was the Renaissance?” I finally found the meaning of Renaissance: the revival of classical culture. This word is come from Italian word which is rinascita. Then, French historian, Jules Michelet had come out with the definition of Renaissance. He define Renaissance as decisive historical period in European culture that represented a crucial break with the Middle Ages, and which created a modern understanding of humanity and its place in the world. He also promoted the Renaissance as representing a certain spirit or attitude, as much as referring to a specific historical period. But then, his Renaissance only took place on 16th century even though he had defined it from the previous century. There was also Jacob Burckhart, Swiss academic defined it as an Italian 15th-century phenomenon. By read it further, I found that these two persons read the vision of the Renaissance like a version of their own personal circumstances. Then again, there was also an Oxford-educated don, Walter Pater defined on this word. Similarly, in further reading, all these three thinkers had created 19th –century idea of the Renaissance as more of a spirit than a historical period.
The Renaissance was a cultural and intellectual movement that had its peak during the 15th and 16th centuries. During these times there was a heightened interest with the classical learning that was brought about in the middle ages. The renaissance first started in Italy and then eventually spread to Western Europe. During this period there was a high interest in the aesthetics of the classical world like architecture. The renaissance focused on the 17th century philosophy which came from the Greeks.
The period of the Renaissance was a period of change and creativity in the areas of political, cultural, social and economic. Humanism during this period focused on the intelligence of man, that affect the subjects of art, but also the curiosity to capture the personality. Renaissance art has changed the way people viewed themselves, other people and ultimately the world around them. It was an era that really produces the greatest artists of all time.
As previously stated, the renaissance was the rebirth of society. What led to this was a decrease in faith because of the great schism, a conflict between two popes, where both said they were the pope. People were starting to take a secular view compared to what the church told them to believe. Society was changing to where individual viewpoints mattered. With politics starting to matter, and a better economy, places were beginning to be city centered, specifically city states, which are urban societies that have taken secular views.
The Renaissance (1300-1700) began in Italy and eventually spread to Germany, France, England, and Spain. The Renaissance is also known as the Middle Ages. To understand what the Renaissance exactly is would be to say that it was the cultural rebirth that occurred in Europe through a term called humanism. In other words, the people wanted a Christian worldview through a classical learning style. While many things helped the Renaissance become well known, the political and economic aspects of the Renaissance is what played a huge developing role in which helped it flourish into creating its environment. The economic aspects were just as important as the political aspects of the Renaissance, but it was the political aspects that had the most
The Renaissance was a time of change. It began in Italy during the 14th century, and spread throughout the North. People all over Europe were affected, for the better and for the worse. Some people finally had a chance to control their own fate. Others, like upper class women, lost their social status. The values and purposes of Renaissance education were to improve the society, increase the economy, and restore the religious beliefs.
