Learning is not dependent on knowledge acquisition alone, but rather on one's ability to reflect and digest the information, and be able to translate it for noesis. Individuals, through the process of transformative learning, utilize transactional or dialectical reflection to construct meaning of the world. While instructional education enkowledges the student, transformational education can bring about critical consciousness, helping the individual develop the ability to analyze, pose questions, and take action upon the contextual phenomena that influence their practice. (Dirkx 1998). Individuals need more than subject matter knowledge to cope with the fast-changing and complex work contexts in modern business environments.

The transformational process of introspection helps learners better to understand how they learn and become self-directed learners. There are two types of portfolios, best-work and growth and development (Oermann, 2002). Best-work portfolios provide evidence of the nurse's competencies and expertise and may be used organizationally or when applying to additional career opportunities. As a means to showcase education and ability, nursing schools have used the ePortfolio as a tool to document a student's educational experiences and progress. In the professional realm, an ePortfolio can offer the ability to describe a particular focus of patient-care and outcomes. Growth and development portfolios are designed for clinicians to monitor their progress in meeting personal and professional learning goals. The growth and development portfolio is a working document that provides ongoing evidence of competencies and areas of research. (Oermann, 2002). The use of electronic portfolios has been suggested as a means to facilitate continuously accessible learning in response to changes and complexities in nursing practice and to foster critical thinking in individual assessment and accountability. (Byrne et al, 2007) The ePortfolio can also be an avenue for peer collaboration and mentoring, if incorporated into the portfolio development
