Group activities can often be very tedious and stressful for some people, but being able to work in a group is a very useful and important skill to have. The five main characteristics of group work are forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. All of these aspects of group work are all very different, yet equally important to maintaining the life of a group. I have experienced all of these aspects in my own personal life when it comes to working in a group, and I believe that following these guidelines with insure the effectiveness of the group.

In this level, we are switching from individual behavior to group behavior. A group is define as two or more individual, interacting and interdependent who are initially coming together to achieve particular objectives (Stephen P.Robbins, Timothy A.Judge, 2014). The CESIM simulation game provided a forum for both practical and intangible learning. I was a member of the Ubiquitous Mobile team. From the beginning I felt that we had a strong team and a good chance to win the game. Jose and I graduated together in Mechanical Engineering and we knew Chico as a grad student in the Mechanical Engineering department. Chico knew Lucho from a previous class. When you allowed us to pick our own groups, we gravitated right to each other.
In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
Realizing that a group can become a high performance team is important. Accomplishing this goal is invaluable, advantageous and profitable. Once able to operate from a group to the high performing team is a great step into preparation into the big business world. Leaders and members must also realize not only how to accomplish this but that some problems will and can arise from different demographic characteristics and cultural diversity. According to our textbook, there are five stages that develop throughout group development. What I learned in the group final project is that I am not the best with working with people. It is not that I do not want to work with them or that they do not want to work with me, it is that my group which consisted of Alexa, Aaron, Ashlyn, Brett, and myself, had very conflicting schedules so it was difficult trying to rearrange times so all or at least the majority of us could meet up to go over our group work. Before starting our group project “The Day in a Life of…”, we were grouped up with our fellow classmates but not on our own volition. I was not put into a group with people I knew or thought I would like.
Some people may say that group work is a great way to make projects fun and entertaining. I disagree with this because it will not be fun if you are in a group with people you don’t get along with. There will not be fun if there is fighting. There can also be a group member who wants to do everything or must have everything their way. They sit there and tell you exactly what to do and how to do it even though it’s your part of the
Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
Group work has a better influence on students in university than long lectures because it increases productivity, improves skills, and impacts mental health. Students who work in groups are more productive because when working with others more is achieved in the long run. Working in groups will improve or polish basic skills which are used all the time in school and work settings. Group work greatly impact mental health in a positive way for students because working with others can relieve stress.
Min-Ho (2017) writes, "researchers have identified interventions in academic settings that may increase individual contribution to group work, such as alternating group roles (e.g., being leader, recorder, editor), monitoring participation levels, and conducting peer evaluations" (p. 20). In other words, if people are more likely are held accountable for certain parts, individual progress is recorded, and group members are required to judge how helpful each member was, then the group members are more likely to complete their part of the assignment (Min-Ho, 2017). I have been assigned to multiple random groups for assignment during my first year of college. I usually create group chats to keep everyone informed about due dates and meeting times. Constant reminders do help with time related problems but I often find myself frustrated when students do not complete their work with maximum effort or correctly.
