We should all remember a day when we walked into school and our teacher said we were doing group projects. I hated those days. A while back, my teacher made me do group projects all of the time. I usually got stuck with kids who did not want to do their work. The groups were usually graded as a whole which meant that I could not let the other person’s work go undone. I am completely against group work. I disagree with it because there can be too much socializing, group members who refuse to do their work, and someone missing from school that is needed for the project. Unfortunately, it means that the others in the group have to do extra work. In order to get a good grade all work must be completed even if it isn't done by the person responsible for it. This also means that the group will have to find time to get together to do the project. If work isn't done and there is no time in school to do it, it must be completed outside of school. The problem with that is most people are busy at different times. How are you supposed to finish a project if you can’t get together with your group? Because of one person who did not want to do their work, everyone is stressed. If the work is not done at all, the entire group will get a bad grade. If there is a missing person, how are they supposed to get their part done? What if that person needs to be there for another person to complete their section of the project? What if the person who is gone has materials that the rest of the group needs? Parts of the project that are missing on the day the project is due can hurt the grades of all group members. When a group member is not at school, stress is added to the other group members. If someone is not there to work on the project, others are worried it will not get done. Some people may say that group work is a great way to make projects fun and entertaining. I disagree with this because it will not be fun if you are in a group with people you don’t get along with. There will not be fun if there is fighting. There can also be a group member who wants to do everything or must have everything their way. If you are studying together it is very helpful, and you will get a lot done. Also, with a group mind, if you are doing a project for work/school there is always somebody there to look over your work, just in case you mess up. Then, if you are doing a project with some a lot of calculations, having a group is very helpful. In case you mess up or just do not see a mistake you made on a calculation and correct it, so you do not have to get some points taken off for getting it wrong. There are pros and cons to this subject matter, but I think the cons outweigh the pros.
At Delta High school, a student may choose to either work alone or to collaborate with a group in order to finish a project. Both choices offer pros and cons when it comes to efficiency and the quality of work. In a group setting, students may get sidetracked, or the group itself may not be able to function properly. Has anyone ever walked into a classroom and saw all the desks smashed together and got that annoying feeling knowing you would be working in groups with no one you knew that day? I know I have. People can view group work as a bad thing because they either do all the work by themselves or get none of it done because everyone else is socializing. With these suggestions in mind, I am against the idea of working within a group. Group projects are very stressful, and do not benefit most groups because some people within them are uncooperative causing no work to get done and end results in a bad grade. Therefore, group projects are not beneficial because they lack one of the main reasons people receive a project- education.
This issue of bad leadership resulted in conflict and a dysfunctional group (Wang & Thompson, 2006). Due to the amount of conflict within the group, the group members seemed to give up on the assignment, resulting in a lowered grade. These issues would be non-existent if the leader had allowed other group members to take part in the assignment, opposed to her trying to get the workload done by herself. This was very ineffective for our group as one person cannot complete all the tasks that were required (Hewes, 2014). After attempting to contribute to the experience, and failing, I believe it further supports the idea that the leadership within the group was not up to a good standard. In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. I used to believe that I did not perform very well in groups. I am an observer who likes to learn alone. I thought I learned best when I worked on my own. Even though I always knew group work had many positive values, I was more comfortable with the lecture-based approach and resisted group work merely because it involved change, not because it had a collaborative learning approach. However, during the learning community project, I came to realize that I learn more effectively when I work in groups. Working in a group was like an adventure for me; there were both exciting and challenging times while preparing for the learning community project.

Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
There are a few pros and cons of working in a group. The best part of working in the group was not having to do all the work alone. As a group we discussed parts of the work given to us and decided who would do which part. We all helped one another, but alone we did not have to carry all the weight. The worst part of working in the group was feeling anxious as to whether other group members were doing their part. This experience taught me not to depend on others to do their part or my part. Robert and David Johnson, two publish authors and faculty members at the College of Education for the University of Minnesota, stated that when working in groups, there are three ways students will interact with the rest of their team; they can compete to see who is “best” in the group, they can not pay attention to other students and work individually, or they can cooperatively work with the rest of the team while having an interest in the other’s learning styles.
