Cold Equations Analysis
In a galaxy far away, where an EDS ship has fuel limited to the exact weight of the cargo there is a stowaway on the ship. In order to calculate for fuel ,a math equation is used to determine the amount of fuel the ship needs to get safely to its destination. If there is an unwanted x added into the equation the ship will run out of fuel and crash. In the short story, The Cold Equations, written by Tom Godwin, a pilot must fly the emergency fever serum to the planet Woden in order to save the six people there dying of a fever, but he comes across a stowaway (x) that makes it impossible for him to deliver the serum to the people in time,

“The stowaway was not a man—she was a girl in her teens, standing before him in little white gypsy sandals, with the top of her brown, curly head higher than his shoulder, with a faint, sweet scent of perfume coming from her, her smiling face tilted up so her eyes could look unknowing and unafraid into his as she waited for his answer.” Barton, the pilot has the internal conflict having Marilyn jettisoned and saving the six dying people on Woden. Barton wants to save the dying people on Woden, and he also wants to save Marilyn but he has to one. His choice was to have Marilyn jettisoned. Marilyn is such a sweet and nice girl but Barton has to save the people on Woden, he lets Marilyn stay on the ship for a while and talk to her brother ( which was her intent ) Eventually, he had to jettison her because he has to balance the cold equation in order to save the people in time on …show more content…
They ran out of their serum at Woden because of a tornado that destroyed their supply. Barton noticed the needle on the temperature gauge move up in the storage room, which means that there is something in there that shouldn't be . He knows that there is a human in there. He assumed a rough and tumble man and prepared to shoot, but he found the opposite. He found an 18 year old girl named Marilyn Lee Cross, she is trying to get to Woden to talk to her brother who she hasn't seen for 10 years. Her brother is on the government survey crew in Woden and she wants to talk to him. She thinks that she was supposed to pay a fine for stowing away but she didn’t know the rules of space. In space, if you stow away you get jettisoned. She is shocked when Barton tells her this. Since she is not a criminal and didn’t try to harm anyone, Barton calls in to the the commander, but he says that there is nothing that they can do, he can keep Marilyn for an hour but then she has to get jettisoned out of the ship. While she is in the ship she is able to radio to her brother for a few minutes, he was away in a helicopter but returned just in time so she could talk to him. He said that his family will get along fine without her. Marilyn is sad and she is reluctantly jettisoned by Barton

In “The Cold Equations”, a short story by Tom Godwin, Godwin did some interesting things with time as he described the unfortunate story of a girl who stowed away illegally on a small spacecraft. The girl, Marilyn, did not know the consequence would be her own death. Unquestionably, in “The Cold Equations,” Tom Godwin manipulated time in order to influence the pace of the plot, because the manipulation and presence of time and deadlines creates suspense, inspires increased interest, and purposefully instills a sense of impending doom.
“The Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin tells a story with the central thematic tension of one person's life against the winning aspect of the greater good. On the frontier of space there are very precise rules that must be followed and when they are broken there is a punishment. In this story Marilyn hid on The EDS to see her brother who she had not seen in ten years. However, if she had only waited a year Marlin and her brother Gerry would have been working on the same planet. The ship captain has to report when this stuff happens, but when he called in he tried to save her because no one wanted this young girl to die. In the end the pilot had to kill her, yet he waited till the last moment giving her the time to write her last goodbyes and talk to
The second chapter of ' 'In Cold Blood ' ' focuses on the aftermath of the murders. While the townspeople and investigators cope with the murder of the Clutter family, the killers make their way to Mexico.
In Cold Blood, a novel written by Truman Capote and published in 1966, is, though written like fiction, a true account of the murder of the Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas in 1959. This evocative story illuminates new insights into the minds of criminals, and how society tends to act as a whole, and achieves its purpose by utilizing many of the techniques presented in Thomas C. Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor. In In Cold Blood, Capote uses symbols of escape and American values, and recurring themes of egotism and family to provide a new perspective on crime and illustrate an in-depth look at why people do the things they do.
The main purpose of In Cold Blood by Truman Capote is to offer insight into the minds of the murderers of the Clutter family, Dick and Perry. However, asking an audience to be open-minded about men who have committed such heinous crimes is no easy task. Capote instead methodically and rather artfully combines imagery, parallel structure, and perspective in two separate passages found between pages 107-113 to contribute to his characterization of Perry and Dick where the former is deserving of sympathy and the latter, disgust.
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote takes a brave deviation from the mainstream of murder or crime novels in that the author frequently takes the perspective of the perpetrators of the crime in question. Dick Hickock and Perry Smith were two particularly perverse individuals who were hung for the murder of the Clutter family. Capote gives a well researched account of the murder and events following November 14th, 1959 in such depth that the reader may even begin to sympathize with the duo. Capote portrays the murderers through a journalistic and mostly impartial description that enhances the reader's understanding of the two by going into trivial details. Dick and Perry are two individuals from conflicting origins and attitudes. Hickcock lives

... 23) (Blanco). He herded the six of them together into the largest bedroom in the apartment. Once they had all taken a seat, Speck lit a cigarette and tried to make light-hearted conversation with the women. He insisted that he wouldn’t hurt them; he only wanted their money, as he hoped to jump a ship on its way to New Orleans. He began collecting money from each nurse. Pamela Wilkening, however, spat at him when he insisted on getting money from her. She said she would “pick him out of a line up” (Fornek). Speck shoved her away as another student nurse, Gloria Jean Davy (age 22), arrived home from a date with her fiancé. Speck waved his .22 at her as well, and she too nervously took a seat with the other nurses (Bachmann). As the night wore on, however, he grew increasingly agitated. He pulled out a switchblade and tore up bed sheets, binding their hands and legs.

W.D Valgardson perfectly shows that loneliness and isolation often leads to rash acts of cruelty, and to suicide or death. He describes this throughout the story by showing Gregory getting falsely accused of stealing his brand new pilot uniform. The author continues

Chasing Ice covers the long debated topic of global warming and whether or not human activity is currently causing global temperatures to rise. Evidence suggests that increased carbon dioxide emissions over the past couple hundred years are responsible for the warming of the Earth’s surface, and thus increasing the levels of the ocean due to an accelerated rate of ice melting. We discussed this same topic in class and how humans are contributing to the greenhouse effect which plays a large role in trapping these unnatural amounts of gases such as carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and causing a rise in the number of natural disasters around the world.
