The Blood of Olympus Book Review: Imagine being in a race against time to save the world. Imagine feeling all alone like no one's there for you and you’re feeling rejected by everyone. This is how Nico felt in the book, “The Blood of Olympus” by Rick Riordan, where the crew of the Argo II need to get to Athens Greece and stop the giants from raising the patron goddess Gaea or else the whole world will be destroyed. Nico, Reyna, and Hedge have to get the 40 foot tall Athenea Perosis statue back to Camp Half Blood to heal the bond between the Roman and Greek demigods before they have an all out war against each other. Since this is such a large book I am only going to focus on one of the main characters, Nico. Nico thinks that no one likes him, …show more content…
When Nico landed there he said, “Crap we landed in the middle of nowhere, where lots of souls lay here. I can’t ever do anything right!” (366) says Nico. Then Reyna says “Nico it’s alright you’re using a lot of your life force.” Then Nico responds, “No it’s not alright if the Roman souls come out we’ll be done for!”(367) Nico turns this situation from bad, to worse. Nico is getting angry with himself when he should be focused on the fact that he needs to rest and that he needs to help his friends with his power to keep ghosts at …show more content…
He displayed sadness when he saw everyone having a good time and he felt alone. Nico said to himself, “Why can’t I be out there? Why don’t people include me in things. I’ll never have any friends and I will never find anyone to love me.” (450) Then Nico said “I wish I hadn’t freaked out Will, maybe he’d still be my friend...” (451) Another piece of text that supports that Nico displays sadness is when he gets back to his camp with his friends and realizes they are surrounded by an unfriendly pack of wolves and the first werewolf, Lycaon. Once Nico sees that they are surrounded he says, “Oh no... I took to long talking to my father at the temple and now both of you have to suffer because of me...”(159) He says the as he fights back a little tear. Nico needs to realize that he needs to just jump in with people and join in on the camp activities. Nico also needs to not sneak up behind people from the shadows. When he sneaks up on them like that it takes them by surprise and when they aren’t expecting it their reaction isn't going to always be pleasant. Nico also needs to realize that everything happens for a reason and that it wasn’t his fault when they got surrounded after visiting his father in the

2) What is the main conflict in the book? Is it external or internal? How is this conflict resolved throughout the course of the book?
Capote opposes the death penalty, almost pleading that Perry is insane. As the Psychologist is unsure of whether or not Perry is insane, the court quickly shuts that escape route down. The imminent death of Perry and Dick makes the reader feel split on the two, where they would rather have Dick put to death and let Perry live, if the reader so chooses that Perry is insane.
Enduring a tragedy often leaves one with feelings of depression. These effects could include loss in interest, hopelessness and feelings that things will never get better. Depression is more likely when you have had great losses, such as a family member (Common Reactions After Trauma). Another effect is changes in ones’ usual behavior. This could include not doing something that is routine of them or different feelings (Osofsky). These symptoms apply both to Holden, from The Catcher in the Rye, who lost his younger brother, and May, from The Secret Life of Bees, who lost her twin sister. Due to their losses, they both feel great despair and act out. Holden often describes himself feeling lonely, like nobody understands him. He even goes on dates with girls he has no interest in. Having been kicked out of multiple schools, he loses all interest in his grades or what his teachers think of him. He also does things that are not like him; he goes out to bars and attempts to buy alcohol. Also unlike him, he pays money for a stripper which he doesn't end up having sex with. Holden explains that he is feeling “more depressed than sexy” (Salinger 93-98). May Boatwright also shows signs of depression, and changes in her usual behavior. Since her twin sister died, May was never the same. She became depressed and carried the weight of the burden. He...
Women in ancient Greek times did not have equal or political rights. Athena and Antigone, who were both very heroic women went above and beyond the stereotypical woman. In society today, women are still not looked as an equivalent to men. Athena and Antigone share the Greek heroic traits of honor, perseverance, and of living in a higher class. In Sophocles’ Greek tragedy, Antigone, and Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, the female characters, Antigone and Athena are not solely traditional female characters, instead, they embody the heroic characteristics, honor, perseverance, and high social standing.
Michael MacDonald’S All Souls is a heart wrenching insider account of growing up in Old Country housing projects located in the south of Boston, also known as Southie to the locals. The memoir takes the reader deep inside the world of Southie through the eyes of MacDonald. MacDonald was one of 11 children to grow up and deal with the many tribulations of Southie, Boston. Southie is characterized by high levels of crime, racism, and violence; all things that fall under the category of social problem. Social problems can be defined as “societal induced conditions that harms any segment of the population. Social problems are also related to acts and conditions that violate the norms and values found in society” (Long). The social problems that are present in Southie are the very reasons why the living conditions are so bad as well as why Southie is considered one of the poorest towns in Boston. Macdonald’s along with his family have to overcome the presence of crime, racism, and violence in order to survive in the town they consider the best place in the world.
The book overall is a very hard book to understand because of the way it was written and the time frame in which the book was taking place in and the complexity of the characters the book has. Nick Caraway is particularly difficult because he is not only a major character to keen into he is also telling the story a year later and reflecting his thoughts on how he behaved. Nick holds the qualities of slow judgement on people he meets but he only does this because it was infused in him at a young age by his father and he is very practical with what to do and how to do it also he has some integrity to him and knows how to handle himself as a man. Nick must be understood because he is not only the man caught in the cross fire
There are many essential emotions that form the building blocks of our lives. These emotions help to shape the people that we are. These feelings are emotional necessities to ultimately keep us happy. No piece of literature these feelings more evident than the Odyssey by Homer. Throughout the course of this book there is one major emotional theme: love.
Aeschylus and Eugene O'Neill have populated their trilogies with cannibals and vampires. Family members feed off one another both literally and figuratively. For the houses of both Agamemnon and Ezra Mannon, this bloodlust is insatiable and inherited, an inescapable curse. A family curse provides the dramatic force necessary to push characters toward pivotal actions and events. At the conclusion of both trilogies the curse is finally broken (or at the very least supplanted). While O'Neill and Aeschylus articulate the destructive and violent effects of the curse in similar terms, each playwright breaks the curse to achieve distinctly different thematic goals. The curse is described and decentered in order to be critiqued.
For as long as I can remember, there has been a woman, who goes by Medusa. She is from Athens, Greece. Medusa obeyed all the Greek gods & goddess, all except the goddess of wisdom, which is my official title. I am Athena, goddess of wisdom. Medusa is established as woman who is all about herself. Throughout my tale you will understand why they conceive this opinion.
The play Antigone by Sophocles is a Greek tragedy that focuses on a family and a city that has experienced great upheaval in recent years. Out of the ashes of war fought between two brothers, Eteocle and Polynice (sons of Oedipus), their uncle Creon is now ruler of the city of Thebes. Creon’s first order as the new king is that Polynice, the rebel brother, will not be sanctified by holy rites and will lie unburied on the battlefield whereas Eteocle will be honored and buried with respect. Oedipus’s two surviving children, Ismene and Antigone, remain in Thebes and under their uncle’s care. When hearing Creon’s decree that Polynice is forbidden to be buried, Antigone decides to ignore this law and honor her fallen brother by burying him. In doing

The Roman army is the representation of the empire’s strength, responsible for the creation, conquests, and glory of the ancient Roman Empire. It is no secret the might of the roman army came from the superior training, experience, and equipment of its individual soldiers. There were many brilliant and no so brilliant generals that owe their success and accomplishments to their battle hardened armies, but the unsung heroes are the advanced medical practices and innovations that allowed the soldiers to recover from their wounds and return to the fight. Roman military medicine was vastly superior to their enemies and is largely responsible for making sure the Roman army efficiently recovered from their wounds and returned to their duties on the battlefield.
Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan is the story of seven demigods and a satyr on an adventure to save the mortal world as we know it from the Earth goddess Gaea. The story is told from each character’s perspective; they are split into two groups: Group One consists of Jason, Percy, Annabeth, Piper, Frank, Leo, and Hazel -- they are on the Argo II, and their job is to go to the Acropolis to stop Gaea from waking -- Group Two consists of Reyna, Coach Hedge, and Nico -- their job is to bring the Athena Parthenos to Camp Half Blood, so the Romans won’t attack the Greeks. Group Two’s only way to transport is shadow travel -- which allows them to travel between time zones in a matter of seconds, but this drains Nico’s power so it can only be used
Because his family, and especially his mother, frowns upon public displays of emotion, Conrad keeps his feelings bottled up, which further contributes to depression. Encyclopedia Britannica, in explicating the dynamics of depression states, "Upon close study, the attacks on the self are revealed to be unconscious expressions of disappointment and anger toward another person, or even a circumstance..., deflected from their real direction onto the self. The aggression, therefore, directed toward the outside world is turned against the self." The article further asserts that, "There are three cardinal psychodynamic considerations in depression: (1) a deep sense of loss of what is loved or valued, which may be a person, a thing or even liberty; (2) a conflict of mixed feelings of love and hatred toward what is loved or highly valued; (3) a heightened overcritical concern with the self."
