Women in ancient Greek times did not have equal or political rights. Athena and Antigone, who were both very heroic women went above and beyond the stereotypical woman. In society today, women are still not looked as an equivalent to men. Athena and Antigone share the Greek heroic traits of honor, perseverance, and of living in a higher class. In Sophocles’ Greek tragedy, Antigone, and Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, the female characters, Antigone and Athena are not solely traditional female characters, instead, they embody the heroic characteristics, honor, perseverance, and high social standing.

Athena is the daughter of Zeus, who is the king of all gods. Says Athena, ‘But come now, let me make you so that no mortal can recognize you. For I will wither the handsome flesh that is on your flexible limbs, and ruin the brown hair on your head, and about you put on such a clout of cloth any man will loathe when he sees you wearing it; I will dim those eyes, that have been so handsome, so you will be unprepossessing to all the suitors and your wife and child, those whom you left behind in your palace.’ (13.396-403). In the quote Athena is using her royal sense of fashion to transform Odysseus’s image from a warrior to an old beggar. Athena is of royalty, by being the daughter of the king of the Greek deity royalty. Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus the King of Thebes. “ Who knows if this world's crimes are virtues there?,” (515-523) in the quote Antigone uses her royal wisdom to question whether or not the virtues of the world would be present in the crime committed. Antigone is the daughter of a king of the Theban royalty, therefore making her royalty. Typically in Greek society a hero was usually a man that was of royalty. Athena and Antigone are females, not males, and they display heroic traits that are reserved for men. Athena and Antigone valu honor to a great extent. Throughout the Greek tragedy, Antigone, Antigone, the female protagonist displayed a great lust for fighting for her own honor; She fights to be able to bury her brother. In Homer’s epic The Odyssey, Athena shows her hunger to maintain honor by fighting the gods to be able to continue to provide aid for Odysseus. Throughout each ancient Greek work, Athena and Antigone show strong perseverance despite great suffering. Antigone persevered and buried her brother, after being told not to, even though she knew that doing so would result in great punishment. Athena persevered and continued to provide aid to Odysseus, even though she was told not to by the gods. Both females were born into a higher class, and were stereotypically expected to not do anything with their lives, except be a rich female, But both females live up to the Greek hero archetype and prove that a royal female can become something great. Throughout history, with the exception of a couple civilizations, women are looked at as a lower class.
