The placement of a new standard in public schools has always been a challenge, especially to find the perfect standards to help students in their learning development. Public schools have evolved over the years to different teachable standards to advance students education. The new current standard that is being implemented is common core. In the California Common Core State Standards package defines the purpose of common core as, “to help ensure that all students are literate and college and career ready no later than the end of high school” (California Common Core State Standards, 2). The migration of people have caused challenges in the education system, therefore pubic school have made an effort to be multicultural to their students needs. In An Introduction to Multicultural Education: From Theory to Practice “Historical Foundations of Multicultural Education in the United States” by Chinaka Samuel Domnwachukwu defines multicultural education, “It is seen as an attempt to create awareness and tolerance between cultures and related world wide” (Domnwachukwu, 84). Multicultural education is an import component of learning, especially in a school with a large population of minorities. For instance, a large population of students attending a public school are not as advance in their English vocabulary in comparison to those whose only language, and form of communication in English. Public school have found form to do what they can with English Language Learners (ELL) students, because they are aware of the obstacle students face to master a second language. In the United States, English has been the dominant language that is taught inside of the classroom, and the challenge for ELL student is to make the effort to perform to the best of their abilities in spite of their English. For teachers to communicate with ELL student does poses a challenge when the student is not profession in academic language, and struggles with the daily task of being able to perform independently as their peers. The Common Core State Standards has been adopted by many states in the United States already. This issue is gaining both positive and negative opinions within the education world and society. Some want to know why the standards were created and what the meaning behind these standards is. What is the reasoning for implementing these standards, and why is there so much controversy that follows. Why do these four words cause such controversy? The challenge of improving academic achievement among all students of color has become a trending topic in education. The “achievement gap” has grown wider among students of color versus Caucasian students every year. Through the years, our classrooms have been through a lot of cultural changes. “As the United States endures its largest influx of immigrants, along with the increasing number of U.S.- born ethnic minorities, the nation must be prepared to make the necessary adjustments to face the changing ethnic texture of its citizens” (Howard, 2003)(Banks, 2001). The duo of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and 21st century skillset allows for positive results in the teachers delivery methods and the information the student retains. The combination allows for problem solving, critical thinking, and the promotion of social skill. The partnership also increases the retention of data thus allowing for student success. It utilizes test and quizzes to measure the retention of knowledge. The program also integrates cognitive learning into the curriculum which allows the student to have a deeper understanding of material while gaining the ability to problem solve real world problems.

The President of the National Education Association, Dennis Van Roekel gave an excellent explanation of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in an NEA policy brief: “We believe that this initiative is a critical step in state efforts to provide every student with a comprehensive, content rich education. These standards can support the collaboration across states and stakeholders by providing programs; resources and policies that will help overcome the weaknesses and inequalities in our schools today” (2007).
The Common Core was designed to be a set of standards with fewer in number yet clearer in describing outcomes, which all students are expected to attain. These standards are organized in a way that will give a sense of connectedness of each grade. To help students achieve these standards, teachers must create a scope and sequence about what needs to be taught along with a pacing guide to keep them on track. A difficulty for teachers is to decide what NOT to teach from existing curriculum. Teachers sometimes get caught up in lessons or activities that they like and the students like even though it may not be in the curriculum. “So, the Common Core State Standards are not adding more work for teachers but allowing them the “power of the eraser” over the “power of the pen.” (Sandra M. Multicultural education is a system of education or teaching that incorporates the beliefs and values of people from different cultural settings. In the classroom, for instance, teachers may adapt lessons to cater for the cultural diversity of the students in any one particular class. Often, “culture” is defined broadly as, ethnicity, language, nationality, encompassing race, gender, class religion, sexual orientation, and “exceptionality”, a politically correct term for students with specialized needs or disabilities (Abbott,2013).
There are many factors that play a role in the learning process for every human being. Race, religion, language, socioeconomics, gender, family structure, and disabilities can all affect the ways in which we learn. Educators must take special measures in the delivery of classroom instruction to celebrate the learning and cultural differences of each of their students. As communities and schools continue to grow in diversity, teachers are searching for effective educational programs to accommodate the various learning styles of each student while promoting acceptance of cultural differences throughout the classroom. It no longer suffices to plan educational experiences only for middle-or upper class white learners and then expect students of other social classes and cultures to change perspectives on motivation and competition, learning styles, and attitudes and values that their homes and families have instilled in them (Manning & Baruth, 2009).
It is imperative as an educator to have strategies to teach multicultural classroom. Whether it is something as simple as having posters of all different ethnicities of children, or something harder like convincing parents to be open to your diverse teachings, it is important to try to create an anti-bias classroom blueprint. Teaching only dominant culture will hinder your students, and their families, from the ability to become and open minded person to challenge the world’s stereotypes. Challenges will inevitably ensue, but the willingness to overcome these challenges will be beneficial for everyone.
I consider myself to a long life learner, I realize this fact when I immigrated from my born country El Salvador and I started a life in the U.S. After, I few months in this country, I recognized how important was to learn the English language. But I also learned that some people had the same ambition of learning my native language Spanish due to the most recent immigration wave for Central America and Mexico. Do I consider myself a teacher or do I born to be a teacher? I do not think this is the case, if anything is true is that I was born a leaner, and on my way to achieve my education, I discovered how important is helping others to reach their educational goals. That is why my philosophy of teaching foreign languages comes from my own personal experiences as immigrant, student, and ally to those in need of education. But most important my passion for teaching is because I experienced the importance of learning a new language myself.
In most institutions of learning today, the classes are made up of students from different ethnic backgrounds. These have different traditions and also speak different languages. In a typical classroom, the majority of the students will speak the same language. The teacher must then employ strategies which will accommodate all the students in the class. This will ensure that every learner gets the best quality of education. This will enable them to be better prepared for career and expressing themselves. In this paper, strategies to assist learners of the English language in their literal development for third grade learners. In the paper, three strategies that can be used by the teacher will be discussed. New strategies and research that will help the English language learners to gain in depth mastery of the language will also be discussed. Due to the widespread learning of the English language in most schools, addressing issues of the language learners is of vital importance. Teachers should have the understanding that cultures are what give someone identity and therefore no student should leave their culture for another. Instead, there should be the blending of different cultures so that students can appreciate and learn from each other.
