The word “school” brings nothing except goosebumps to many students nationwide. Bullying has been around since schools themselves. However, in the recent decades, the term “bullying has gone far overhand. After all of these years of tears, cuts, and suicides, there still has been no solution. The only option we have now is, to have bullies convicted with criminal charges.
Bullying is the use of superior strength or influence to intimidate someone; typically to force him or her to do what one wants. Even if bullying is as old as classrooms, since the past decade, states moved to address legislatives. This once was simply known as usual domains of schools (Toppo 1). That means 13 million kids feel threatened to go to what is supposed to be the safest place. “Nearly 160,000 kids stay home from school each day, to avoid being bullied” (7). Whether it maybe verbal/emotional or physical abuse, bullying is one of the biggest fears of teenagers, nationally. Tweens and teens develop many insecurities, such as, their body shape, their style of clothing, wealth, etc. and bullying is just putting fire on fire. Finally, “about 30% of middle school student are either, bullies, victims, or bully-victims, whereas 23% of those are in high school” (“Bullies are more likely to partake, 1). Kids are involved in bullying at a very young age; when this habit develops to their teenage life, it will be hard change once they are adults. The question “whether or not bullies should be charged with criminal crimes” has been a critical discussion nationwide.
Some warn that throwing bullies in jail might not be the best remedy (1). Instead, the best solution considered is to have a national rally. By gaining more visibility, their goal is to have the cause elevated. According to Eliza Byard, the head of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), “Locking children up (and) imposing criminal penalties on children represents a tremendous failure on the part of adults” (1). Kids should not be blamed for their actions, parents should take the fault instead. Emma Teitel mentioned that bullying is caused by “parents discord” and “cruelty”. She also included that she feels uncomfortable with the fact that “bullying is a rite of passage; kids will be kids, and bullies will be bullies” (Teitel 1). This states that saying “kids will be kids” will bring no solution, if not more damage to the problem. If we say this, we might as well say “bullies will be bullies”; this is basically a mirror factor. Some may oppose that by saying that bullying pushes past the children’s
stage. Being a bully you are basically pushing someone to their extreme limit, and for this reason they should be charged as a criminal. As we all know, bullying has been coming more intense for the recent decades; most common is suicide. Today there are several adults who would just shake their head and reply, “kids will be kids”, but this will not solve the up roaring problem (Beck 1). The words “kids will be kids”, has brought nothing except another topic to argue upon. Before considering all bullies as criminals we need to act or speak up for one another and parents must support their children (Mitchell 1). Currently, politicians and more legislation are our final resolution. Let us take Amanda Todd as an example; after Amanda’s bullying situation was discovered, the administrations’ solution was to put the bullies in the same room as Amanda and have them work it out. Imagine being in the same room with twelve bullies who hurt Amanda physically and emotionally, the same twelve, “who created a website targeting Amanda, who left blood on her locker door, who told her she’d die if she came back to school” (“Mother pens survival guide… 2). Try putting yourself in a victim’s position and being told, “kids will be kids”. It is ridiculous if someone considers a bully, human after putting someone through so much pain. We know bullying has been the cause to several self-abuse and critical cases of suicide; taking bullying to zero tolerance is not the only action we can take. Bullying is deeply rooted into this nation’s culture. Parents and families are an enormous effort to elevate this issue. We as a community need to take extreme measures to demolish bullying. Our first step needs to be to inform, and assure that there is an understanding that, bullying is wrong- no matter what reason. If we all respected one another, problems like bullying will never occur.

The only problem with these is that they don’t treat the underlying problems, and suspension only rewards the behavior by sending the aggressor home for a number of days. Although the punishment needs to fit the crime, society must also address the underlying causes. Some states have implemented into law the requirement for counseling, but don’t go further than that. Other states have looked at fining and punishing the parents, but that may increase the punishment at home in unhealthy ways.
