Should Bullies be Charged with Murder? It is often said that no one should take their own life. While they rarely admit as much, that suicide is no big deal, many take for granted that an innocent person took their own life because someone thought they were superior to them. My whole life I’ve been hearing cases about bullies taking their victims to an extreme level, causing them to take their own lives. I firmly believe the bullies of victims that commit suicide should be charged with murder and manslaughter. Bullying is the act of aggression, or intimidation to harm another person, whether it is on the internet, physically, or verbally. However, I disagree. If they led the person to thinking they weren’t good enough to be living, and if the victim did absolutely no harm to the bully, then they should pay the consequence. In Ohio, four students in Mentor High School took their own lives in two years, because they couldn’t stand being harassed by other students. Eric Mohat, one of the four victims, killed himself in a week of being bullied. His mother Jan Mohat said in the interview the following about his son, “Having things thrown in his hoodie, getting shoved into a locker, books being thrown out of his hands, being called fag. I believe the piece that pushed him to the top was that the bully said to Eric, why don’t you go home and shoot yourself, it’s not like anyone would care. (Fox News)” In making this comment, Fox News gave us an example of how words and can really make an impact on someone like Mohat. Also, that bullying is taking a new turn and should be taken very seriously. Jason Carroll the reporter mentioned that these two boys used to be great friends up until 3 months ago and it all went down because of bullying. Crumb would always threaten him, call him names, he even went to the boy’s apartment and urinated on his door. The little twist in this story is that the boy is being charged as an adult but he is serving his time in a juvenile facility. Mark O’Mara, a criminal defense attorney, says that what the boy did is also harassment and stalking. O’Mara comments, “Yet in the school system, because they don 't feel like they have the right tools to address it, it 's literally just touched over and ignored. And it got to the point finally with that type of harassment where a crime occurred, a murder, which probably could have been avoided at any costs if the police or the schools could have gotten involved earlier. (1)” In other words O’Mara means, that schools tend to ignore the bullying situation because they feel as if they don’t have that power, so they just drop it. In reality they do, and that death could’ve been avoided if the school would’ve talked to the police. Which seems reasonable, he committed the crime, and just because he was 14 doesn’t mean anything.
