In the book The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Junior is the narrator of the book. He is Native American and lives on the “rez” with his mom, dad and sister. At the beginning of the book his sister runs away. His sister was a role model for Junior so when she ran away it made life harder on Junior. One day in school Junior realized how deprived his school is on the rez. In anger he threw his text book at his teacher. He expected the teacher to scold him but instead his teacher, Mr. P told him about a white public school called Rearden. Junior decided to go there so he could get a better education. In order to have all of that he has to make the right choices. When Junior’s mom and dad say that white people have the most hope, it actually means that they have the most choices in life or that they tend to make more right choices. A white person could have all the choices in the world and still make the choice to be a painter who never makes any money. Mary decided to run away because things got hard for her. Her running away makes all the choices that she could have had disappear. I think everyone has the same amount of hope, but it depends on the choices they make. When someone makes a choice it either makes hope for them grow or shrink. At the beginning of the book if Junior were to look at anybody that goes to The Park School, he would say that they have a lot of hope, because they go to a nice private school, don’t have to worry about money for gas. Their families can provide for them with the basic needs and even beyond that. Now let's say that the kid is struggling in school, doesn't do his or her homework, and is planning to run away, Junior would still say that they have more hope than he does because they are white. Junior and Penelope are talking about their dreams. Penelope's dream is to go to Stanford and become an architect. Since Penelope is poor and Junior is even poorer, they are not supposed to have dreams, and yet they still do. The adults in their lives would tell them being realistic they shouldn't even have these dreams, but the limitations set on them and the size of their dreams are what drives them forward towards their goal. Modern day Native American are widely known as stewards of the environment who fight for conservation and environmental issues. The position of the many Native American as environmentalists and conservationists is justified based on the perception that before European colonists arrived in the Americas, Native Americans had little to no effect on their environment as they lived in harmony with nature. This idea is challenged by Shepard Krech III in his work, The Ecological Indian. In The Ecological Indian, Krech argues that this image of the noble savage was an invented tradition that began in the early 1970’s, and that attempts to humanize Native Americans by attempting to portray them as they really were. Krech’s arguments are criticized by Darren J Ranco who in his response, claims that Krech fails to analyze the current state of Native American affairs, falls into the ‘trap’ of invented tradition, and accuses Krech of diminishing the power and influence of Native Americans in politics. God and the Indian is a two person play written by Drew Hayden Taylor. In this play we have a man named George that was a former priest at a residential school. We also have a lady named Johnny Indian that was a former student at said residential school. In the play Johnny accuses George of having molested her as a child. George tells Johnny that she is delusional and will not admit to his wrongdoings. The author tells the story from both George and Johnny’s sides. I think what the author is really trying to portray here is the denial of the people that worked in the name of the church at residential schools years after they had left and/or been shut down.

In the beginning of the book, Arnold was a hopeless Native American living on a hopeless reservation. In the middle of the book, Arnold leaves the reservation and finds out that his sister left too. From poverty and alcoholism to bulimic semi-girlfriends, he had so many excuses to stop, but the passion of his dreams pushed him forward. Like a hero, Junior continued, determined to do well and build a greater future for himself. An example that showed Junior’s passion for education and desire to achieve his goals was when he threw an old geometry textbook at his teacher: “My school and my tribe are so poor and sad that we have to study from the same dang books our parents studied from. That is absolutely the saddest thing in the world…My hopes and dreams floated up in a mushroom cloud” (Alexie, 31). Junior clearly understood his disadvantaged education and he was very upset about it. He longed for a better education. Junior was passionate about education, because it would allow him to achieve his goals and break the depressing pattern he was trapped in. These vehicles served the purpose of furnishing transportation for about 30 members of a Cleveland area youth group, whose mission was “to bring good news to the badlands';. In short, the group was ministering to the Indian children of the Pine Ridge Reservation, which was in close vicinity to the natural wonder found in the foothills of “the badlands';. The trip became a tradition for my church and I traveled there on three separate occasions. Each year, the team received a welcoming that could be described as anything but inviting. In fact, the first year the trip fell on the Fourth of July and as we drove in, our vehicles were bombarded with fireworks. I could never really grasp why we were so despised. After all, our intentions were commendable. The matter became clearer after I read Zitkala-sa’s “American Indian Stories';. Within this text, a Native American expresses her beliefs that actions similar to ours serve merely in altering culture.
As we know, the reservation is plagued with Indians who have abandoned their dreams, such as Junior’s dad. Junior thinks this is because “reservation Indians don't get to realize [their] dreams.” Implying that Indians aren’t provided with a lot of opportunities in regard to their future. Perhaps, poverty doesn’t give them the chance, or maybe it’s societal expectations within the reservoir. Her stories showed how Native Americans reacted to the white man’s ways of running the land and changing the life of Indians. “Zitkala-Sa was one of the early Indian writers to record tribal legends and tales from oral tradition” (back cover) is a great way to show that the author’s stories were based upon actual events in her life as a Dakota Sioux Indian.
