The book Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion was written by Jay Heinrichs to elucidate the techniques of persuasion. Thank You For Arguing, first published in 2007, has been used worldwide to help students and adults learn the knowledge of persuasion. Heinrichs includes many examples on how to use the different varieties of persuasion. Heinrichs uses steps to make sure he changes his audience's opinion, discusses ethos in depth, and continues to use Aristotle's reasonings. Furthermore there should be continue use of this book for ENGL 1301 because the students can gain a lot of insight from rhetoric. Thank You for Arguing is an informational book about every possible aspect of using persuasion throughout your everyday life. Heinrichs uses an informal tone throughout the book to set an easy reading mood that allows learning the tricks simple for the reader. Another skill he uses is referencing celebrities and popular TV shows such as The Simpsons and Donald Trump, using this technique helps the reader relate by peaking their interest. This chapter goes over the persuasive leadership traits which are disinterest, virtue, and practical wisdom. Heinrichs conveys the readers by explaining ethos to change their opinion on the argument. He gives a good understanding of the values and virtue. The things people value like their faith, money, and honor help their character. He tries to get on the readers good side so they can trust his word. This chapter can be very useful for highschool students that are learning how to use ethos in their writing because it gives examples of ways to remember ethos traits such as “C3”: caring, cause, craft. It is meaningful because it helps someone understand what ethos is used for and provides understanding to use in the
future. Although Heinrichs gives good examples to win arguments, he teaches the reader how to manipulate a person. This can be wrong in some ways but beneficial in the end because people will understand what they’re trying to argue about. This book gives many great examples on how a reader should defend his or her main point and finding a way to change the audience's attitude. As a highschool student one should continue the use of this book in class because it will benefit the future students. This book provides enough information for a highschool student that is beginning to learn the art of rhetoric. When the reader completes this book, he or she will come out knowing at least one thing about rhetoric skills. In conclusion, Heinrichs gives details on how to persuade a person to get what you want. It also provides a new way of understanding someone’s opinion. I would recommend this book to highschool students that are learning how to use persuasion because we are growing up and are developing our own opinions. This will give enough information to help win our arguments.
Since the beginning of mankind, humans always use their skills of persuasion in order to prove a point to an audience. John F. Kennedy and William Shakespeare, though it is a 362 year difference, wrote and announced work displaying persuasion values. John F. Kennedy, in his Inauguration Speech, and Antony, a character in the William Shakespeare play Julius Caesar, uses the tools of language and persuasion in order to deliver the audience their intended reasoning. In both of the speeches, some of the tools that make these speeches effective is the tone, the rhetorical devices, and persuasive appeals.
Effectively communicating an idea or opinion requires several language techniques. In his study of rhetoric, Aristotle found that persuasion was established through three fundamental tools. One is logos, which is used to support an argument through hard data and statistics. Another is ethos, which is the credibility of an author or speaker that allows an audience to conclude from background information and language selection a sense of knowledge and expertise of the person presenting the argument. The impact of pathos, however, is the most effective tool in persuasion due to the link between emotions and decisions. Although each of these tools can be effective individually, a combination of rhetorical devices when used appropriately has the ability to sway an audience toward the writer’s point of view.
Argumentation has followed humans from the dawn of time as a way for us to express our ideas and for our ideas to be heard. People naturally obtain the knowledge to persuade others, either backing their opinions by fact or touching others emotionally, from growing up and through their own experiences in life. We can be persuaded by a numerous amounts of different factors pertaining to the argument. Persuasion is a very powerful weapon even against the most stoic of people. In the Tragedy, Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare Cassius, a high class politician with bad intentions persuades Brutus, an honorable, stoic high class politician and Casca to kill Caesar for the good of Rome, however, Cassius’ real goal is to get rid of Caesar because Caesar doesn’t like him. After killing Caesar, Brutus and Antony, Caesar closest friend, make speeches at his funeral in order to persuade the public. Cassius, Brutus and Antony’s use of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos in order to persuade the public, Casca, and Brutus shows that anyone can be persuaded by appealing to their emotions, motivations, and personalities.
Persuasion is a natural method many people use to influence a person's beliefs, attitudes, intentions, motivations, or behaviors in a situation. Although each leader comes from different environments and possesses different characters, all of them keep their precious values in mind and persist in chasing their ideal lives. Even if each value can be interpreted by different meanings, they all lead encourage individuals to become better.

Rhetorical Analysis and Persuasion Every day we are victims to persuasion whether anyone can notice it or not. Logos, pathos and ethos are the types of persuasion. Logos persuades by reason, pathos by appealing to emotion and ethos by the credibility of the author. Using a variety of characters from pop culture and media, he shows how argument is a natural occurrence in life and what the reader must know to win over an audience who goes against what they believe.
