Times are changing and tattoos are becoming a common trend. This is causing conflicts in the common workplace. Tattoos are being seen as unprofessional and this may not be the case. Workers should be judged by their work and not what happens to be on their skin. This art that is permanently found on their body was put there for a reason. Many people find their tattoos to be empowering and use them to express themselves. The workers want this freedom of expression and should not be discriminated against it. There is a set of rules, called the code of Ethics by the National Association of Social Workers that states how tattoos and piercings are not defined as unprofessional yet are still questioned. Regarding this code, “These official designations clearly imply that professional appearance remains an important issue in social work practice. However, the question arises as to how social workers with tattoos and piercings (and perhaps other modifications) navigate these standards” (Williams 373) This code of Ethics has no rule that says Tattoos are unprofessional. Merriam Webster Dictionary defines professionalism as, “the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person” This means that person’s level of professionalism should be determined by the person’s level of work, and not what is tattooed on his or her body. In Forbes magazine, the hirer of Philadelphia’s ZB Sports stated “If I’d passed on her because of her tattoos, I’d be out one phenomenal employee,” (Hennessey 1) He was referring to Courtney Pecola who is now the company’s vice president. Tattoos can have religious affiliation. For example, this man was tattooed for his religion and felt as though covering them would be against his religion. “He was tattooed following a religious ceremony after a session involving communal prayer, meditation, and ritual. He believed that intentionally covering the tattoos would have been sinful.” (Osland 1) If tattoos have a religious tie, this could be an infraction of a person’s right to express their freedom of religion. If an employer puts a blanket ban on tattoo, (which means that they make a rule that no one can have tattoos in the workplace) a person with a religious tattoo could take it as discrimination. Nick Jones explains it as, “If a tattoo, or a piercing, forms an integral part of a person’s religion or belief, it could be argued that any blanket ban would be indirectly discriminatory.” (Jones 1) This does not mean that discrimination is telling someone to cover up their tattoo at work, but not hiring someone because of their religious
Organic inks, which are my personal professional preference, are the safest on the market. These types of inks are typically derived from plant matter. Vegan inks are also in the same class as the organic inks as well and are also ranked just as safe as organic inks.Organic inks are also safe to digest. I personally have no plans on digesting tattoo ink, but if I planned on doing so at least I know that it is safe.

There are many different jobs in this world for young black men my age. They can either choose to be a fireman, a police officer, a writer, or a singer, but that’s not what I want to do. I know of a career that I think that would be great for me to do and that will help me and support me and my dreams. Tattoos have been around for as long as I can remember. They started out as brandings for slaves, but now it’s become more of a piece of art that people add to themselves. Tattoos have become very popular in many parts of the world, particularly in Europe, Japan, and North and South America. The growth in tattoo culture has seen an increase of new artists into the industry, many of whom have excellent arts training. With advancements in tattoos and the ongoing upgrade of the equipment used for tattooing, this has led to an improvement in the quality and distinct look of tattoos. It is understood to be a symbol of remembrance, love, or just a way for someone to express themselves. Since this new hobby for some has started increasing, so has the policies for companies to hire people with tattoos. As an adult, I chose to put a few tattoos on my body as a symbol of things that I really cherish. In today’s society a lot of tattoos are misinterpreted or judged. Mainly by those who are against them, or teenagers who use them to rebel. They are also a good way to challenge the traditional gender norms. Such as a deep and tangible commitment to alternative gender definitions, and other women use tattoos to conform mainstream forms of feminism. A classic example would be a man dressed in a doctor’s coat, and then revealed to have full sleeves and drives a Harley. With the latest trends in today’s society, it is not unusual to see people with tattoos on a daily basis. Typically, if you visit a business you are more likely to see someone who has body art hid in the back with the least social occupation, so that the public does not see the tattoos or piercings. Many businesses have a specific dress code where employees have to have long sleeve shirts, bracelets, or other types of traditional jewelry to cover the not-so-typical body art. The strict dress codes that businesses have set up regarding body art are too drastic with the latest changes in society, and should probably be loosened up to allow people the opportunity to express themselves.

These days, individuals choose to tattoo themselves because it is part of their lifestyle or personal image. Although it is a form of free expression, employers have a right to enforce certain rules about tattoos in their company because they have a public image to uphold. When having a job such as nursing, professionalism is key. Two studies concluded that patients perceived their health care provider to be less professional if they had body piercings and tattoos. Even more so, the older generation definitely considered it to look worst on a female professional rather than a male. It was said by different patients that, “Male practitioners with visible piercings were almost never deemed more professional or approachable, and women with visible piercings other than in the earlobe were viewed even less favorably…” (Pfeifer). Having the patients’ respect is vital and helps reach success in being a nurse. No matter the age of patients, they are going to look up to the person caring for them and will likely judge them on their appearance. However, do those individuals consider the changed perceptions that people may have on them based on their tattoos? In America, people who have tattoos tend to be affiliated with gangs, are criminals, open minded, don’t have a professional job, and are modern. Tattoos can have lots of different meanings to their owners, some can be deep and for others it can be simple. Some tattoo owners are prideful of their tattoos, whereas some have a feeling of regret of getting a tattoo. I hold the following assumptions towards people who have tattoos in our culture.

''In the U.S. more women than men are tattooed, 36% of the ages is between 18-25 and 40% of those ages are 26-40 that have at least one tattoo.''(Random facts 1) People have been getting tattoos for a while now. It has been said that ''tattoos date back as far as the Neolithic era or around the fourth to fifth millennium BC.''(skinsight.com 1) Tattoos should be acceptable at a place of business because people get tattoos for significant purposes, tattoos can tell stories and build confidence, body art is a way for someone to express themselves, make up, and tattoos are reminders of life time experiences.
