Enthusiasm, confidence, optimism and a willingness to work - - these are but a few of TJ McMahon’s qualities. This is an exceptional young man whose resume clearly demonstrates not only his involvement but his desire to make a difference. Yet, like everyone else, TJ is much more than a mere collection of titles. I am honored to have been asked to share what I have learned about TJ through my contact with him at SLTP.
I first met TJ when he attended one of the student leadership training conferences that I direct. Our summer program attracts student leaders from all over New England. That summer (3 years ago), student leaders from 101 schools from seven states and two countries attended the program. The "typical" delegate is a junior, holds three student offices and is among the tops in his/her class. That background information is important, because my role as director does not allow me to become closely involved with the delegates. Generally, I work with the delegates only in general sessions, although I do get to observe all of the classrooms, group sessions and activities, as a result, I do not get to "know"

very many of the delegates. TJ returned later that summer, he came back to attend one of our advanced level leadership conferences.
Here he proved to be exceptional. He stood out. One of the first things that you notice is that TJ is an active listener and questioner. He listens, internalizes and is not timid about asking questions. At that first conference I watched him internalize each lesson, then put it into practice. During this experience, TJ was able to demonstrate his strength of character through his willingness and drive to share his skills with and for the benefit of others. He used the opportunity to practice his leadership skills. I believe that the experience of working with so many strong leaders enabled TJ to see the strength of his own leadership. The advanced session is quite limited - only the strongest leaders are accepted. TJ rose to the
top. Last summer was invited to attend The Leadership Center (TLC). This conference is by invitation only. It is highly competitive and we only accept 8 to 10 students each year. TJ mixed in well with that group. Each was and is an accomplished leader in their own right. TJ more than held his own. One thing is very clear, even when you first meet this exceptional young man. TJ is not only aware of the direction of his life, he has assumed control. His goals are lofty, but there is no doubt that he will achieve each one. I believe it's one of his strongest qualities. Frankly, TJ just doesn't know how to give up ! His leadership and motivational skills, his ability to work with and for his peers, his cooperative spirit and the driven desire to learn - - are the reasons I do not hesitate to recommend this young man. He will make a difference for whatever college he chooses to attend. The first words that come to mind to describe TJ are; enthusiastic, friendly, caring, capable and determined. His optimism and honesty are a breath of fresh air. I am proud to have been asked to recommend and endorse TJ McMahon. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. Rather, this is someone that has a true connection with their peers, and has unmatched passion for what they do. Johnson’s strengths are that she has the experience of military and attended HBS, where both her leader personality and business insight were enabled. She is a “go-getter” and can “instill confidence into the people around her”, according to her colleagues and subordinates. She is also communicative, because she initiated “one-to-one” conversation with every employee, and arranged plant-wide “state of the site” meetings from quarterly to monthly. In addition, Johnson is an insightful person because she mentioned multiple times that she would not sacrifice long term interest for short term growth.
I believe to be a successful leader it is important to not just focus on one particular style, but to incorporate many. If you take a few high points from each style and learn to mesh them together you should have a better understanding of leadership as a whole. This class has taught me that being a leader is a lot more challenging than people may think. Leaders have to wear many different hats in many different situations. To become an effective leader you have to work at it. It may come easy to some, but to others it is a skill that is shaped and molded over time. Different experiences and situations help mold leaders into who they become. I hope to use the different styles we have learned about to mold me into an effective leader in today’s society.

The leadership challenge is all about how leaders mobilize others to make great things happen in an organization (Kouzes &Posner, 2012). It is based off the leader’s practices and how they work together as a team to innovate, challenge and reward others in any given situation. Strickler and the managers learning about their leadership style was an extremely important part of my internship. I learned that leadership is less about the leader 's needs, but more about the needs of the people in the organization they are leading.
