Most often when observations are taking place you will be in a supportive role unless you are observing for your professional development. Whether you are observing a teacher or another TA or HLTA or you are in a supportive role you should look at all the different aspects of teaching that is going on.
Steps to follow if in a supportive role:
1. Before an observation takes place, it is a good idea to talk with the teacher who you are supporting to get a brief overview about the learning objective, the learning episodes that will take place to meet that objective and where he or she wants you to be positioned in the class and which children you will be specifically supporting.

At the beginning of the observation whilst the teacher is giving the initial input you may be asked to do an ‘overall’ role, keeping children on task, behaviour management etc but at the same time not distracting the teacher or other pupils from the learning taking place.
4. After the initial input and the children are set off on task, depending on how the children are organised (ability or mixed ability) you could be working with a focus group or moving around the classroom. If you are asked to work with a group it is a good idea to record any key learning points what pupils have done well or struggled with, this can be done on a TA feedback sheet and this can be shared with the class teacher after the observation.
5. Once the children have completed the task the teacher will do a plenary to check understanding. This is a good opportunity for pupils to share what they have learnt and an ideal time for you to communicate with the teacher about good examples of work you have seen from pupils you have worked with, or encourage those children who aren’t has confident in sharing their work.
6. Finally, the observer will give feedback to the teacher, you may be invited to this but if not, the teacher you worked with will give you some feedback themselves after to inform you of how the observation

Observations are most used when a child’s development is causing concern. These can be taken during lesson time and in the playground and record what the child is doing in an informative way.
Thereafter the TA will be working with a child or group of children following the plan delivered by the teacher and providing vital support to allow the children to extend or be assisted with their learning. The group observation occurred at an International school. The primary school counselor was the facilitator. He meets with individual classes every month. The ages of the students range from 3-11 years old, which represented Pre-k through 5th grade. Each class is pulled out to the counselors classroom for a 45 minute session led by the school counselor. The counselors classroom has minimal distractions with lots of positive quotes. The chairs are set up in a semi-circle so that all can look at each, along with some students sitting on a carpet in the middle.
Jump, throw, and run. These are movements shown throughout a track meet, but if you pay attention closely there is much more that goes on. I observed this event because I am a track athlete and wanted to see how others view the sport I like to play. I viewed the track meet with two different perspectives as a spectator and a competitor. As a spectator, I watched the whole arena versus when I was a competitor, I paid attention to individuals more. I also viewed the actions of coaches, fans, and the event staff within the arena and how they may or may not have an affect on the athletes.
I listen to my students. I allow time for their individual impute in what they are learning, and adjust accordingly. I really believe that is why students can be so into the idea of being taught, because they are all encouraged to lead the discussion and projects before them as it relates to the curriculum. I try to learn from my students by listening to their interpretation. I am learning what interest them, and feed off of it in the work that needs to be performed. For my after school program observation I chose to observe the after-school program at Washington Elementary. This after-school program is held in a small gym and since the gym is used during the day for school activities there was no real floor plan to the program. A small carpet was set in the middle of the gym for circle time and the supplies and check in sheet were kept on a table. The rest of the room was filled with tables that are used for school breakfast.
Thinking about normal social interactions and normal social behaviors, I think of comfortable. When I sit down with a friend, a usual routine is followed, “Hey, how are you, what’s new?” (e.g. My turn, your turn). These questions between my friend and I include eye contact, attention, and facial expression. Usually, I feel that I give my friend my undivided attention. Other normal characteristics include: remembering what the person has just said so a comment can be made, as well as each comment is appropriate and in relation to the current topic. Moreover, the duration between each question or comment is short.
The event that I attended for the interpreter observation requirement was an event that occurred in the classroom and took place in order to provide interpretation for a guest speaker, Richard McGann, who was Deaf and blind. The event was held at the University of Pittsburgh during the Intro to Interpreting American Sign Language-English class taught by Jessica Adams on Tuesday, November 10th at 5:30PM and the interpreted lecture took place in a typical classroom located on the third floor of the Cathedral of Learning. There are four steps in the process of modeling for observational learning. They are attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Observation is important as the practitioner can find out what the child is interested in and what motivates them to learn alongside their progress and how they behave in certain situations, additionally at the same time it identifies if children need assistance within certain areas of learning or socially (DCSF, 2008). The teacher that I observed was Mrs. Cynthia Carney. She is the kindergarten teacher at Greystone Elementary school. As my first time in the classroom, I tried to observe as much as possible.
