On July 15, 2015, Caitlyn Jenner received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. The Arthur Ashe Courage Award is presented each year to an individual whose contributions have gone beyond sports. Many people may not recognize the name Caitlyn Jenner since only a few months prior, she was known as Bruce Jenner. In 1976, he was considered the best male athlete in the world. He won the men’s decathlon, which consists of ten events of track and field.
Through all this, Bruce struggled with his self identity. From a young age, Bruce knew that he was different from the other boys. When his mother and sister were gone, Bruce loved to dress up in their clothing. Bruce remembers envying all the other boys and girls who were comfortable in their own skin since he felt like he was “stuck in the middle”. Throughout his entire life, Bruce struggled with himself and was in fear of what his family and the world may think of him. But, this year Bruce decided that he was going to introduce Caitlyn to the world. Due to his

They believe that there is no solution and the only way to get rid of the pain they feel is to take their own lives. They can also feel embarrassed because their own parents or family members do not accept what they are going through. Letting them down can also cause them to commit suicide because they think that if their own family members do not understand, no one will.
Another sociological theory that relates to this topic is “the self” by George Herbert Mead. People form this negative idea of transgenders because of the in “the self” we take the opinions of others. For instance, even at a young age transgender children are bullied by even their own peers for acting different. These children who are bullies learn from their parents or society about what is deemed normal and what is
Throughout the graphic novel, Bruce hides his true sexuality by taking on a false identity for people to
“Qualitative study that paints a picture of what life is like for transgender people, Wyss (2004) interviewed seven transgender high school students and asked them about their experiences at school. … Many report that not just other students harassed them but that people they even considered friends would either help or join with assailants during physical attacks. Two of the students were set on fire in school. There were also constant threats of sexual assault, or coercive sex, or physical assault, both verbal threats and notes left in lockers.”
The great feminist theorist once said “‘Sometimes people try to destroy you, precisely because they don’t see it, but because they see it and don’t want it to exist’” (Mook 195). Support becomes very important for transgender people at the time they transition. Many families support their transgender family members, but society rejects their transition. Many people want transgender people out of their communities.
Caitlyn Jenner along with Buzz Bissinger have paired together to write this book. Mr. Bissinger is the one who wrote the article in Vanity Fair when Caitlyn Jenner appeared on the front cover of the magazine. He spent months with her before she began her transition and after she emerged as Caitlyn Jenner. . The book, which does not have a title yet, will center on the transition of Bruce Jenner transitioning into Caitlyn Jenner
People have different reasons to die by their own hands. Emotional, environmental, and, mental are the three categories that most people's reasons fall into. Undoubtedly, emotional causes often spur from breakups, or other drastic negative changes in social life. Oftenly, teens will commit suicide to “ escape feelings of pain, rejection, hurt, being unloved, victimization, or loss”(Tracy, 2016). Consequently, when teens have no solutions for their problems they feel that suicide is the solution. “Bullying, cyber bullying, abuse, detrimental home life, loss of a loved one or even a severe breakup” are ways that the environment can increase the chances of voluntary death (Tracy, 2016). Also, “Most teens who attempt suicide do so because of
Tranny. He-she. Shemale. It. Hermaphrodite. Freak. Transgender people often face discrimination in many ways, whether it be by the use of these slurs or by some form of assault or harassment. Many people, no matter their ages, become disowned by their families or rejected by society for coming out as transgender. Too many times, parents of transgender people force their children to live somewhere other than their homes, such as with other family members or with friends. While they likely are better off without discriminative family around, the sense of being disowned or potentially unloved is often too much for some to handle. Transphobia creates an unsafe world for the transgender community, and, because of its toxic nature, society as a whole needs to strive to lessen and eventually erase transphobia altogether.
Bruce forces Alison to dress up more in a feminine way like he always wanted to do for himself. At times he forces her to wear a clothing or jewelries that were more feminine. “What’re you afraid of? Being beautiful? PUT IT ON, GODDAMN IT!” (Bechdel 99). She feels forced to follow her father’s orders yet she still did it. Bruce is harsh on his daughter because as a kid he wanted to dress up like a girl and so by deciding what Alison should wear, he is reliving his childhood. In the reading, Bodies and Bathroom, same idea is addressed “…, in which a 10-year-old biologically male student wanted to be known by a female name and dress like a girl. The school, he said, ultimately agreed” (Frosch 245). Although, Bruce feels frightened by the idea of announcing his identity, based on Alison, they could have accepted who he was as a person and a father. If only Bruce has shown his identity and sexual desires, then he could have enjoyed his life and escape the darkness he was living in. While Alison was able to over come her shame while Bruce died with his secret.
The equivalent of gender dysphoria has also been reported in individuals living in cultures with institutionalized gender categories other than male or female. It is unclear whether with these individuals the diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria would be me (APA, 2013). Despite the signs of more acceptances for transgender people, many studies show that they continue to face significant challenges. Research by Aaron T. Norton and Greg M. Herek, PhD, at University of California, Davis, for example, found that the rejection transgender people encounter is significantly harsher than the negative attitudes experienced by lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people (Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, 2012), (Glicksman, E.,
Depression is one of the main three reasons people commit suicide. Depression can happen following the passing of a loved one. It can be very hard and traumatic on anyone. Most people don’t know how to handle the pain. Eventually, the suffering becomes too much and they slip into depression. Some people can develop despair worse than others. Also, over ninety percent of suicides happen because of a mental illness. The
Transgender Today Nowadays, there are lot of unexpected changes coming in our lives every day which are challenging to our society. Gender issues are one of the hot topics among new changes. Transsexuality is a critical part of this gender issue. After reading the article “Night to his day” by Judith Lorber, I found a clarification regarding the social construction of gender. While looking for some facts about transgender, I have also found a lot of articles with different points of views from researchers, scientists and individuals who have transformed from their origin to transgender men/women.
Looking at the Functionalist perspective it is perceived that the transgender community goes against society’s traditional concept of sex and gender. Transgender gender-nonconforming individuals face many obstacles in a society that is unforgiving of any individual who does not fit into the “appropriate” expectations or behaviors of gender identity or a gender binary system. The rules of behavior in our society that are considered “appropriate” for women or men inhibit us all. This is the social construction of gender roles, patterns of socially defined behaviors and expectations that are associated with the female and male; men have to dress, act, and speak in a hard, masculine way, while women are to be feminine and soft. There’s not much room for individuality there and for some of us, this is a little more challenging. There seem to be some misconceptions about gender and sex, I believe it is much more complex than we came to
Statistically, 0.3-0.5% of individuals in the United States (approx. 700,000 people) identify themselves as transgender and global estimates provide similar percentages (Gates, 2011). Studies conducted regarding transgender individuals show that this class of people suffer from unusually high physical, verbal, and sexual abuse, as well as discrimination in housing and employment (Patel, 2013). Patel (20...
In this essay we will explore what factors influence social behaviors and how these factors influence gender stereotypes, why we follow them, and how transgender people are affected by social influence.
Suicide is a much bigger problem than society will admit; the causes, methods, and prevention need to be discussed more openly. Committing suicide probably sounds like a foreign idea to most people, but to the people who think about it, they deal with it every day. More importantly, the question is what leads people to kill themselves? In general, most people do not want to actually kill themselves, even though many people joke about it on a daily basis. Being human, we all have a certain amount of will to live.
It’s upsetting to know that there are so many trans-phobic people out there who believe gender is natural and bash people of trans simply because they do not conform to society’s gender expectations. It’s important to realize that transgender people are no different from you and I they are humans just like the rest of society. It is also interesting to note a lot of people get uptight and uncomfortable when the topic of transgender comes up .Our society is so ignorant when it comes to the topic of sexuality and
