Causes of Suicide Around one million people in the United States commit suicide every year. To put that in perspective, it’s around one death every forty seconds. It can happen to anyone, it doesn’t discriminate based on race, age, or gender. It tends to happen to the people we least expect it too. There are many reasons and causes for suicide. It can happen all of a sudden or it can take years for someone to take his or her own life. The main causes for suicide are depression, stress, and drug abuse or alcohol problems. Depression is one of the main three reasons people commit suicide. Depression can happen following the passing of a loved one. It can be very hard and traumatic on anyone. Most people don’t know how to handle the pain. Eventually, the suffering becomes too much and they slip into depression. Some people can develop despair worse than others. Having a busy work schedule or going to school full time and having lots of homework causes huge amounts of stress on many people. People don’t know how to handle it. It consumes their life and that’s all they worry about. Thousands of people in the United States get a divorce every year. People try lots of different things to help ease their workload or problems. For example, some may take up smoking to help with their stress, which can lead to bad health in the long run. Also, when adults with children get a divorce, it usually takes a bigger toll on the child than the parents. Since the children are usually young when it happens, they don’t know how to handle the pain, so they can turn to suicide as the answer. Additionally, relationship suicides are a big part of today’s world. Many people try to fix whatever is broken. When it doesn’t work out, they stress about it and they don’t think they can go on without that certain person so suicide becomes a solution to the
