Subversive Messages: The Representation of Gender in “Anaconda” Overt sexual and gender stereotyped messages have become commonplace in the American music video scene. Nicki Minaj 's video for her hit single “Anaconda” is no exception, with its graphic images of scantily clad women with vibrating and shaking bodies dancing around in an exotic jungle setting with plenty of phallic imagery. Not all of the messages conveyed by this video are immediately apparent; upon scratching the surface, viewers will see gender messages that are far more covert. And while there may be a temptation to assume the worst about the video 's representation of power, gender, sexuality, and stereotype, the video is also strangely empowering. On the surface, Minaj portrays the female gender as highly sexualized and disempowered and yet some of the deeper messages in this video also reflect a sense of female empowerment, confidence, and an embracing of sexuality and sexual assertiveness. The message Minaj sends is one of redefining gender roles and gender stereotypes, and not one of submission. This video acknowledges that gender stereotypes do not allow for women to meet their own sexual needs, thus injecting a series of subversive messages that serve to empower women to redefine the balance of power within traditional gender roles between males and females. In his most recent album, Kanye West raps, “Now if I fuck this model/ And she just bleached her asshole/ And I get bleach on my T-shirt/ I 'mma feel like an asshole.” He suggests that it is the girl’s fault for getting bleach on his tee shirt, which she only did to make herself more sexually appealing. This misogyny in hip-hop culture is recognized to bring about problems. For instance, the women around these rappers believe they can only do well in life if they submit themselves to the men and allow themselves to be cared for in exchange for physical pleasure. In her essay, “From Fly-Girls to Bitches and Hoes”, Joan Morgan argues that the same rap music that dehumanizes women can be a powerful platform for gender equality if implemented correctly.
Females who are over-sexualized often seek attention and acceptance. Raunch is less about female sexual liberation but instead it is fulfilling the male fantasy of unlimited female availability contributing to the stereotypes of gender roles. Raunch Culture is often seen in movies, various forms of advertisements, and through female celebrities. For example, young girls are influenced by Disney’s hidden sexual messages. This creates a negative image by making it acceptable to objectify women. Through the media women expose their bodies, using liberation as an excuse to support raunch culture contributing to the stereotypes of gender roles.
Additionally, Ariel Levy explains a personal experience that she had with GGW when they were filming on the beach. While the crew is filming, a blonde woman in a bikini wants to take a picture with Girls Gone Wild, but the crew and Mia Leist scream back “we don’t want pictures, we want boobs!” (Levy 15). The crew pressures the girl and her friend to take their clothes off. When people start to circle around the girls on the beach, Levy describes them as “seagulls sensing a family about to abandon their lunch” (16). As a result of Levy using figurative language to explain the behavior of the crowd, she effectively portrays the danger of the situation. An aggressive crowd, who is demanding that they remove their clothes, is cornering these young girls. Consequently, society has become enraged and concerned over the girls’ well being. After about forty people surround the girls, Levy says, “I caught myself hoping the crowd would not start throwing rocks at the girls if they decided the keep their clothes on” (Levy 16). Therefore, Levy proves how GGW inaccurately depicts the willingness of their participants to expose them on camera. By exposing the truth, Levy is hoping to anger her readers and encourage them to reconsider participating in or paying companies like GGW that benefit from commodifying women. Readers can see how raunch culture is influencing young women to do things that can potentially have long-lasting consequences. Levy discusses how one girl eventually took off her bathing suit: “The second girl rose up off her towel, listened to the cheers for a moment, and then spanked her friend to the rhythm of the hooting” (Levy 17). Today many of the songs by male hip-hop artists use derogatory terms to objectify women by placing themselves in a hierarchal and controlling positions. In the song “Broccoli”, D.R.A.M. labels women as “lil mama”, “bitch”, and “baby mama”. “Lil mama” is mostly used by young men who are trying to get a young woman’s attention. On the other hand, the negative connotation that has been placed on the label, “baby mama”, is used to categorize women who happen to be the mother of a man’s child and nothing more.The label, “Baby mama”, is used in several modern R&B/Hip-Hop songs to refer to women who happen to be the mother of a man’s child and nothing more. A woman is then stripped away from potentially being seen as anything more than a mother. After having the child, a woman‘s individuality, character custom values is soon neglected by society. Deborah Tolman author of “Dilemmas of Desire” dwells on uncovering a wealth of feelings about sexuality from teenage girls who are faced with a lot of struggles in developing sexual identity and detached from their sexuality. One of her main argument is centered on the juxtaposition of media representations of girls as highly sexualized objects. For instance, “the urban girl is viewed as the overly sexual young jezebel. Latinas are often eroticized as exotic, sexually alluring and available.” (Tolman, pg.170). I agree with this statement due to simple fact that we are living in a highly sexualized cultural milieu and evidence of sexualization is seen through mainstream culture. Yet, as I watched, I noticed that much of the imagery being thrown at me seemed more boring than vital, due to the sexuality it portrayed. One rapper after another indulged in his own personal hormonal fantasy, with slithering women flaunting acres of flesh into the camera. These women were not alive. They had become so objectified as to be sexualized robots.

Regarding Rihanna’s “S&M” music video, radicals would argue that even though Rihanna seeks to show enjoyment through her sexual action and lyrics, she limits female empowerment and promotes sexual violence in the form of bondage against women. Furthermore she supports gender inequality by acting for men satisfaction through her sexual talk and actions . Radicals believe that the common sexual images seen in current pop culture prove that women have not yet reached liberation and are still being manipulated by men, as by acting in sexual ways, women seek to impress their male audiences . By doing so women limit and hide their real personal identity, therefore any belief that women have achieved liberation is a false one, since they are still acting for the benefit of the society in instead of their own, in order to be successful.
These lyrics from one of the first hip hop women band in United State introduce clearly our subject. Usually when the people think about women in Hip Hop culture, they think about sex, they think about women half nude in music videos, we just have to remember the conteoversial music video of Nelly for his song Tip Drill (2003). Women's studies students protest against misogyny in this video who shows women as sexuel object simulating sexuel acts and men throwing money on women's breats. This case is common in Hip Hop culture, specially in Gangsta Rap in videos of 2pac, Notorious Big, 50 Cents, etc. Patricia Hill Collins, Tricia Rose and bell hooks (Hill Collins Patricia : 1991, Rose Tricia : 1994, hell hooks : 2003) spoke about the perverse effect of women's nudity in Hip Hop culture and compare Hip Hop to pronography. They all agree to say that the Hip Hop culture is a male and machist world, where women are used to reinforce the apparent masculinity of rappers. These authors studie rap music through the gender and the race in United State, because women in video music are always black, almost the same happens in France not really with rap but R&B which is a part of the Hip Hop Culture. All the singers of R&B in France have arabian origins, whereas american R&B is more heterogenic. The quetsion is why all the women are black in american video rap music ? And why all the R&B french singers are arabian ? Can we see a postolonial and esclavagist heritage ? These two image, black female seen as a "bitch" and the arabian woman called the "beurette" in France show two different feminities, but how these "myths" involved in the development of a group identity? And what they reveal about the society ?
According to Dr. West, “rap music identifies young black women in five sexual personas: Diva, a woman who trades sexual favors for luxury; Gold Digger, a woman who trades sexual favors for basic necessities and leaves men bankrupt; Freak, a sexual powerhouse; Gangster B----, a "tough" girl; and Baby Mama, a child's needy mother” (Saengianpittsburgh, 2008). Madonna is a controversial legend whose attitudes and opinions on sexuality have forced the public to take notice and change the image of females in society. Madonna believed women’s sexuality was a natural aspect of life; therefore, she dared to challenge the rules and definitions of femininity and sought to expand the meaning of it. In a male dominated world, she wanted to focus on the importance of women and let them have a voice of their own. Madonna shattered all the myths on traditional beauty standards and made her statement on sexuality and feminism, which changed how society viewed the standards of beauty. She impacted female power by encouraging sex- positivity into her music and her style. It is mainly because of Madonna that ordinary women, and women in modern entertainment have more choices and freedom which continues to influence further generations.
Performance artist Patty Chang creates pieces that deal with scopophilia or voyeurism, best described as “the love of looking”, a topic that goes hand in hand with the issues of gender roles in society that Chang also represents in her work. Chang particularly addresses issues of gender roles through her confrontation of female representation in art, film and popular culture as a whole. In Chang’s video clip entitled, “Shaved (At a Loss)”, she sits herself on a chair in front of her audience, hikes up her dress to expose her vagina and then proceeds to, very roughly, shave off her pubic hair. The entire duration of “Shaved (At a Loss), Chang is blindfolded. In this piece Chang presents consumer culture’s fetishization of the ”flawless” female figure, which is outlined by the unattainable body ideals that are portrayed not only in most mainstream pornography, but also in almost all media connected to our society’s popular culture sphere.
A common trend in the entertainment industry today is the objectification of women in society. Sexualizing women are seen in media such as; movies, advertisement, television show and music video, where their main focus is providing the audience with an image of women as sexual objects rather than a human. This is detrimental to society since the media is producing social stereotypes for both genders, which can further result in corrupted social habits. Objectification in media are more focused on females than male, these false images of women leave individuals with the wrong idea of the opposite sex. As media continuously use sexual contents regarding women, the audience starts underestimating women. Specifically movies, it allows media to shape the culture’s idea of romance, sex and what seems
