Just Checking by Emily Colas is a self-reflective, anecdotal compilation of short stories and memories with each story assigned a heading or title that often foretold whether the following explanation would be funny or profound. I was drawn to the book not only out of interest in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and how it affects a patient’s way of living, but also because in doing initial research into the book, there was an editorial review from Dave Sedaris who happens to be one of my favorite authors and who possesses a sense of humor that is both witty and often inappropriate. Dave Sedaris commented that Just Checking was terribly funny and selfishly and hoped that the author, Emily Colas, would suffer a relapse. With that critique, I chose this book. I found the book to be a quick read, but it wasn’t quite as humorous as I expected. Nevertheless, this was a difficult topic to discuss from any perspective. In the book Deadly by Julie Chibbaro there were many themes that were analyzed and illustrated throughout the book. There were only three that catches the eye love can be blind, death can hurt and oppression of women. These themes stood out the most because this book take place in somewhere in the 1900’s because in that era there were many disease taking place in New York. Such as the typhoid, Yellow fever, small pox and other contagious diseases that cause many deaths and also when the Germ theory was just a theory not a law. This book mainly talks about Prudence, Mr. Sopher, and Marm especially but there are others such as Dr. bakers, Jonathan this book talks about how typhoid was carried by an Irish Woman named Mary Mallon and the disease
People wake up every morning without knowing the names of their neighbors, plants, animals, and other objects surrounding them. Which is why in the article “Be specific” by Natalie Goldberg talks about the importance to know the name of people and objects instead of generalizing them. Goldberg states that writers should be specific and know what they are talking about because it will give the reader a clear understanding of what they are reading, it will also give a better description of what the writer is talking about, and it will help the writer to connect with the reader.
The essay begins with Griffin across the room from a woman called Laura. Griffin recalls the lady taking on an identity from long ago: “As she speaks the space between us grows larger. She has entered her past. She is speaking of her childhood.” (Griffin 233) Griffin then begins to document memories told from the lady about her family, and specifically her father. Her father was a German soldier from around the same time as Himmler. Griffin carefully weaves the story of Laura with her own comments and metaphors from her unique writing style.
While reading “The Ordinary Life” by Barbara Crooker, one is able to understand the dramatic irony of the poem and the irony of her ordinary day being rather interesting. In the first line, Crooker states that nothing happened that day, however she later goes on to contradict herself. When reading the poem, one can see her describe a day full of activities, such as: cleaning the cupboards, taking care of her baby, making dinner for her family, and a few other pastimes. Additionally, Crooker uses strong descriptive language to illustrate what the mother sees as an unremarkable day. For instance, “[...] sat in a circle of sunlight,” (line 9) and “[...] a long slow kiss, tasting of coffee and cream,” (lines 26-27) show the depth of her awareness
The city of Denver and the challenges confronting its elected leaders, are no different than any other large city, one of the most problematic of which, includes enhancing the quality of public schools for ethnic minority students from lower socio-economic neighborhoods. Katherine Boo’s, “Expectations”, provides a narrative centered on Superintendent Michael Bennett and the implementation of his ambitious strategy to raise high school graduation standards throughout the Denver public school system. Bennett’s plan to achieve this lofty goal illustrates the “four tides,” or philosophies, of administrative reform: liberation management by allowing students from underperforming schools to attend any high quality public school of their choice; (2) a war on waste through the closure of Manual High School; (3) a watchful eye with computer tracking to ensure student accountability; and (4) scientific management with increased and meticulous academic standards.
Just Checking by Emily Colas showcases what it’s like to live with an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Written in a journal-like format the reader sees what her day-to-day life is like from her perspective. One of the most significant hindrances to her disease is the affect it has on her relationship with her husband. Certain aspects of her disease make it difficult for her and her husband to maintain a healthy and normal marriage.
In Deborah Tannen’s “Marked Woman, Unmarked Men” she illustrates how she believes the way women carry themselves are more looked upon then the way a man does. When it comes to women they had to take what they look like into consideration and each decision that the woman has made, carried a meaning. Men have to make decisions as well, however their decisions are not as notable as woman. I support Tannen’s argument about women being marked. Woman are marked by what they wear to who they marry. Nonetheless, I do believe both genders are marked in some kind of way. Men are marked, just not to the extent as woman are. And when they are marked it is not as open and discussed. Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, documents the author's discovery of her own and her father's homosexuality. The book touches upon many themes, including, but not limited to, the following: sexual orientation, family relationships, and suicide. Unlike most autobiographical works, Bechdel uses the comics graphic medium to tell her story. By close-reading or carefully analyzing pages fourteen through seventeen in Fun Home one can get a better understanding of how a Bechdel employs words and graphic devices to render specific events. One can also see how the specific content of the pages thematically connects to the book as a whole. As we will see, this portion of the book echoes the strained relationship between Bruce Bechdel and his family and his attempts to disguise his homosexuality by creating the image of an ideal family, themes which are prevalent throughout the rest of the nook.
Arguments are everywhere; everyone has used some sort of argumentation in their life. Whether it’s asking permission to go out, begging a professor for additional time on a due assignment, or arriving late to class. Your examining different evidence to decide which way is more dependable to use to make our stateluisament or an argument. In other words, an Argument is a sequence of statements that are used to persuade an audience with reasons for accommodating a conclusion. Creating arguments is something that isn’t hard to do, what is hard to grip on is, finding the logic in an argument. I found myself creating similar scenarios; pretty much made three comparable settings that all fight for the same point.
The tragicomic Fun Home, by Alison Bechdel, is generally considered one of the most important pieces of the modern LGBTQ canon of literature. The graphic novel tells the story of Alison Bechdel’s attempt to find the truth about her father’s sexuality and what lead him to possibly commit suicide. Along the way, Bechdel finds her own sexuality. Bechdel’s choice to write about her and her father’s simultaneous journey to finding their sexuality was revolutionary at the time. Very few authors were writing openly about their own sexuality, and something even more revolutionary that Bechdel addressed was mental illness. It’s unexpected so late in this story, on page 137, that Bechdel would include a lengthy section discussing her childhood Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Why
In the month of March 2016, Women of the World Poetry Slam had Rachel Wiley, a poet and body-positive activist, present her now viral poem called “The Dozens” (Vagianos 2016). This poem was about slams white feminism as a clear indication of whiteness self-defense mechanism. In this poem Wiley included various kinds social events that have occurred in the past years and just to name two: Raven Symone on blackness and Miley Cyrus and Nicki Manji at the VMAs. White feminism continues to become more problematic as the media continues to allow it to be because whiteness makes money; however, intersectionality about race, public imagery, and actual feminism also continues to go viral as the diversity of American become more and more productive.
I have chosen to write about Virginia Woolf, a British novelist who wrote A Room of One’s Own, To the Lighthouse and Orlando, to name a few of her pieces of work. Virginia Woolf was my first introduction to feminist type books. I chose Woolf because she is a fantastic writer and one of my favorites as well. Her unique style of writing, which came to be known as stream-of-consciousness, was influenced by the symptoms she experienced through her bipolar disorder. Many people have heard the word "bipolar," but do not realize its full implications. People who know someone with this disorder might understand their irregular behavior as a character flaw, not realizing that people with bipolar mental illness do not have control over their moods. Virginia Woolf’s illness was not understood in her lifetime. She committed suicide in 1941.
In my perspective, I thought that The Help by Katheryn Stockett was an exciting and special book which enhanced me views or race, class, and gender. This fantastic book gave me the thought of how life was like down in Mississippi during the 1960's. The Help gave me different standpoints and characteristics that had taken place with places still segregated by the color of their own skin. These viewpoints hit my mind that gave me the option to judge the book by how life was viewed upon by society in the past and present time.

A’s for Everyone! is a short piece of writing which was published in the Washington Post on June 5, 2005 and was written by Alicia C. Shepard. Shepard is a journalism professor at American University in Washington, D.C. The audience can conclude that Shepard is creditable due to the fact that she is a professor whom is writing about a topic within her occupational career as well as having this piece published in the Washington Post. Even though Shepard was relatively new to teaching within a university when this piece was written, she was able to conduct interviews with coworkers that have been professors longer than she has. Shepard also attended forums that were pertaining to tips on how to reduce stressful grade confrontations. During one of these forums, she received the chance to have a conversation with the special assistant to the dean for academic affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University. An alternate form a of credibility that Shepard established is that she revealed both sides of the argument within this piece of writing. She demonstrated the point of view of the professor, and then she was able to demonstrate the point of view of the parent considering that she is a parent of a child in high school. Having this child
