I agree with Holland’s claim because it affects me and all the other college students and job seekers. I believe that more should be done in school so that I am prepared when I start looking for a job. I believe that schools should offer more creative writing classes. In the article “A Passionate Unapologetic Plea for Creative Writing in Schools” written by Rebecca Wallace-Seagall, she states “If young people are not learning to write while exploring personal narratives and short fiction, it is because we as educators need more training- or the specifics of the curriculum need development”. I think that if I had more writing classes I would be more prepared and do better in higher level English classes. In my own experiences I found that reading
has helped me improve my writing skills tremendously. Every summer I would be required to read a book for school. This helped improve my writing skills and I learned new words which helped me with my English classes. Reading improves your writing skills; in an article called “16 Ways to Improve Writing Skills” by Dan Shewan, he explains “The best writers are also keen readers, and reading on a regular basis is an easy way to start developing your writing skills. I don’t just mean blog posts, either—diversify your reading material.” I think by reading you are challenging yourself, and you can learn a lot about sentence structure and word choice by reading.
In the 2013 NBC news article, “Johnny Can’t Write, and Why Employers Are Mad”, written by CNBC’s Kelley Holland, she introduces the substandard state of lack of responsibility taken for writing and communication problems in schools of all grade levels. Holland explains according to the “Association of American Colleges and Universities conducted by Hart Research Associates 80 percent said colleges should focus more on written and oral communications”. Holland points out that “Nobody takes responsibility for writing instruction”. Holland implies that this problem affects not only job seekers and college students, but school districts also. In “Writing to Learn: Writing across the Disciplines,” Anne J. Herrington finds different sources stating that writing is to be taken serious. Janet Emig says, "writing represents a unique mode of learning-not merely valuable, not merely special, but unique” (1) meaning that writing is far more essential than we ought to make it seem. Anne Herrington wants educators teaching in economics, history, chemistry or any other subject to guide their students into understanding why progressing their writing skills will be more helpful to them. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the educator; whether he/she wants their students to use writing as a way for students to adapt to different disciplines.

Obeying the formats demanded by teachers is easy enough, but it is not creatively challenging. Diego was a ordinary high school kid just trying to fit in with the crowd, he wasn’t athletic or strong mentally and physically but he was a very intelligent kid. He always had straight A’s and knew almost everything in every subject. I am a the youngest of two Nigerian children. Growing up in Nigeria, the Nigerian education system placed more emphasis on Math and Science courses while placing less on English/Language Arts courses. Although this system may have been flawed, it suited people like myself who the mere thought of having to write an essay or read a book sent shivers down my spine. I believe there are two types of people in the world: those who have a passion for reading and writing, and those who try as much as possible to avoid it. I unfortunately fall into the latter category.
