Intro – Sugar being the main cause of obesity is certainly a controversial issue in our society, with a lot of people on either side of the debate. Some say that sugar has no place in good nutrition and other argue that sugar isn’t having as much of an impact on obesity rates as is implied. Obesity has many causes and the effect of sugar is yet to be fully determined.
A+ Science and multiple tests have shown that eating an abundance of sugar leads to a massive boost in your blood sugar levels. The body tries to handle that with an unhealthy amount of insulin which in turn lowers your blood sugar rapidly making you hungry and crave more sugar again. Food addiction leading to obesity is all about serving size and not the sugar content of it. The difference between a person with obesity and one without most of the time is portions. An obese person will sit down with a bag of chips and say they’ll only have a few but end up eating the whole bag, someone without will stick to their original portion size. Food is what we eat, not nutrients in the food. To single out one nutrient as the source of obesity related issues is absurd as some objects like an apple which is fibrous but also has a high sugar content is good for your health and fighting obesity. There is an assumption that there is only healthy or unhealthy and no in between however a healthy diet needs a mixture of the both sorts of food. Some sugary foods have been shown to help boost blood sugar levels when eaten in proper moderation and help our health if combined with a healthy diet. Obesity isn’t black and white just like our food choices aren’t, it’s not just a matter of eating unhealthily and being lazy that contributes, saying sugar is the only contributor is honesty quite naïve. Sugar is used as a villain in this film and is really used to account for all of our obesity problems. This goes too far in my opinion, because after researching sugar intake and obesity rates, I discovered that there is actually no convincing correlation between sugar and obesity. Sugar consumption has actually decreased in the last few years while the obesity rates continue to climb. This is not stated in the film but is instead ignored and covered up with other meaningless facts about sugary products. Obesity today is a widely spread nutritional disorder that can affect anybody at any age across North America, majority of the reason being because there are so many fast food restaurants at just about every corner. With its low prices people are not going to be making the right decisions in what type of food they consume in their diet. Some examples of the junk food would be: Microwave dinners, snack foods like potato chips, which have high calories. It is not necessarily junk foods that make people obese and fat. Too many carbohydrates and foods with lots of starch in an individual’s diet can also cause them to gain undesired weight. It is not always someone’s dietary decision that makes him or her obese. Genetics play a monumental factor in a person’s weight. For example, if a child is born with two obese parents there is an 80 percent of a chance that the child can be born or become obese later in his or her life. Pregnancy can make the mother gain about 20 pounds after giving birth. Another said cause of weight gain is when the energy intake is more then the energy outtake in the body. That is not always the case.

Ziauddeen and Fletcher in this article discuss the concept of food addiction from a clinical and neuroscientific perspective. They argue that the evidence in food addiction is limited and that further research must be done in order to fully validate the concept. Despite the uncertainty, food addiction has influenced the neurobiological models of obesity and developing debates about formulation of the public health policy. Ziauddeen and Fletch also debate that because there are so many possibly pathways leading to obesity, it is unlikely that food addiction is the most effective cause. Even with their caution, they also propose there are many arguments saying many aspects of eating in obesity are “addictive.”
Obesity is a very complicated disease and there is no simple cause or cure. Obesity refers to the gaining of weight which occurs when the body takes in more calories than it burns. These excess calories then become fat, leading to increases in weight. There are many factors in the onset of obesity. A major factor is sociocultural factors. Society today plays an important role in how we view food and influences our decisions on meal choices. In today's society, meals are made to be quick and easy, often being high in fat, sugar, salt and calories and lacking nutritional value. Television and advertising also focus on unhealthy food choices, which appeal to children with colorful marketing and toys or games. Furthermore, society has also succumbed to a somewhat sedentary or lethargic lifestyle. Physical activity is on the decline and the relationship between reduced exercise and weight gain has been shown to be a major factor in obesity. Many jobs require sitting in one place in front of a computer for much of the day, children often sit for hours watching television or playing video games instead of engaging in physical activities or sports. This results in weight gain because people do not exercise enough to burn the calories they are consuming.

These negative responses by people’s bodies are actually warnings. Maybe people eat sugar for other reasons than the sweet taste. The human body's negative responses to sugar may be a similar purpose to the reason kids feel pain when they are playing too roughly.
