There have been movies, books, and songs dedicated to the “high school experience”, should schools take that away from students now? For years, students have made memories and friends during their high school years. My parents and their parents before them and so on and so forth have went to high school and have made friends and memories with their classmates . I don’t believe that schools should allow their students to access classes online or by video conferencing because it prevents them from getting help with subjects they may need help with, it discourages a student's social abilities, and it restrains them from participating in extracurricular activities. To start off with, students can’t get the help that they need from a household setting. If a student goes to school everyday and has problems with his classes, he/she has teachers to help him with the subject they are having trouble with. At home, these students do not have such an option. Distance learning is supposed to help the student excel at learning, but how are they expected to do well in their studies if they don’t have a guiding hand to help them when they require it. One could make the argument that some student’s parents are teachers and professors and …show more content…
In school, one doesn’t just learn subjects like math and english, but they learn how to get along with his colleagues. What good is distance learning if when one is done learning they can’t put their knowledge to use. When a student learns how to make friends, he/she learns how to branch out their social network, which can result in them more likely getting accepted into colleges and earning jobs. Though one could say that social media helps a student make friends, since they aren’t establishing relationships in reality they aren’t truly working on their social
In his article, “Can You Be Education from a Distance?”, James Barszcz effectively weighs the pros and cons of online education compared to the traditional method, while effectively supporting his position with factual information and statistics. While distance education proves to be convenient for students, Barszcz asserts that it eliminates valuable experiences necessary in order to get the most out of the material being learned.
Handing out participation trophies to the kids who didn’t excel in an activity is most likely to make the kids overconfident instead of rewarding them with one because of progress. If or when someone receives a trophy they feel like a winner but didn’t really try at the activity, they can get overconfident and then lose badly, they also try less at things. Giving all kids trophies might be good to not feel left out, but it can become excessive. People who get participation awards can lose the feeling of what it’s like to do well and win.
Young kids aged between six to twelve receive trophies just for participating in the sport they play. Those kids can lose every game that they participate in, and they will still receive a trophy for playing. By not giving all young kids trophies, they will be well prepared once they reach high school, the kids will not feel happy for losing, they will have a competitive edge, they will feel like they accomplished something, and it will leave the kids with something to play for. To start, by not giving young children trophies, they will be well prepared for high school.
Something that grinds my gears would be, being asked rapid fire questions. I absolutely hate when I come home from school, and I’m instantly greeted at the door by being asked “how was your day?”, “do you have homework?”, “what did you do in school?”, “do you have golf tonight?” All within the time span of one minute. The reason I hate this so much is because I feel like i’m being interrogated, I am not a criminal I do not need to be questioned like one. My mom is usually the one who does this, and I always ask her to stop before I get too upset, but then she always ASKS “why?” which just makes the whole situtation go down hill. She is not a detective so therefore she does not need to interrogate me as if she was one. Yes, I know this is dramatic
Imagine your class is playing a game for the fastest problem solver. You sit in your seat as the teacher counts down from five; you push past your limits so you can beat your classmates. You try your hardest and win excited that you beat your challenger. Now Imagine you're sitting in math class and your teacher tells everyone to do some review problems. As your mind wanders off you're not learning or picking up anything the instructor is saying, because why would you need to listen when you already know the drill.
Have you ever been on a website that gave you false information? This is not improving our lives at all or making us smarter because we believe the information is true until someone tells us it’s not. Then you have to forget what you been thinking the whole time and relearn it all over. This is why I believe that electronic and online access doesn’t improve our lives. Social networking usually can lead to anxiety, low self-confidence, and loneliness in teens according to page 230 in the textbook.
Throughout life, we are told what we can and cannot do because of our age. Whether we are told straight face to face or through things like age restrictions. For the people who don’t know what restrictions are they are the limitation or control of someone or something, or the state of being limited or restricted. We are restricted on many things such a driving, getting married, drinking, purchasing tobacco, and the dropout age of minors. Although there are good reasons why it is this way, I believe that they should handle these things differently.
“Social interaction and social presence are addressed by allowing users to collaborate and communicate with peers either using the system or external applications for online collaboration or communication.” (Kozuh) In other words in order for social interaction to occur Kozuh does a terrible job explaining that the subject or in this case college student has to present or interact with the system in order to have success on online collaboration. If students do not use the school sites then it is a waist of time and money for the school to have them. Social media like Twitter or Facebook is being used as a tool to connect students with their professor in a more modern and up to date. Every school campus offers student’s sites in which they are able to connect with other students and professors, but the sites that school offer are not very common. R. Junco, G. Heiberger and E. Loken, the authors of the article “The effect of Twitter on college student engagement and grades” discuss their semester long study on whether or not Twitter could be used to improve the learning of college students. The author’s main arguments is that by incorporating social media like Twitter into the curriculum would improve the ways that the students interact with their classes and professor, which would help them get the most out of their classes. By having students feel more comfortable and know
There have been many critics that strongly advocate against the use of distance learning in elementary schools. With the increased availability and choice of new technology, comes many new concerns about the quality of instruction and the threat it may pose to the already established methods of teaching. Many believe that this new teaching method may replace the existing classroom all together, and won’t give students the adequate face-to-face contact they need. Most critics fear that “ineffective face-to-face teaching methods could be made even worse when they become technology based” (Truell, 2001, p46). The computer and internet have become dominant distance learning technologies, and hold the potential to take away from the human aspect of learning, so students do not learn the proper social skills they need to develop early on. Children need to learn to interact with one another, and function properly in a social setting, they learn this primarily within the classroom, and if these classroom settings are altered by distance learning, then they will no learn how to function in the normal social school setting. Many critics also say that all schools do not have the appropriate technological support and infrastructure to make distance learning programs effective for students. Since all schools do not have the tools and financial means needed to establish and support effective distance learning programs, they would not be able to keep up with the advancing technology in education, and therefore their students would not receive the same advantages as other students in the schools around them (Ravaglia & Sommer, 2000). Greenwood (1998) states that schools using distance learning are just contracting out their educational responsibilities and that such courses result in the elimination of teaching jobs. He feels that by using distance learning to teach students, they are minimizing the teacher’s job of actually teaching the students and designing lesson plans, and therefore slowly eliminating the need for teachers in the classroom at all. It is thought that there is more emphasis being placed on teaching than learning, and as a consequence schools are using distance education as merely a means to extend the classroom walls . While the critics of distance learning feel that this is just a way for schools to educate students, and relieve themselves of their responsibilities, there has been even more substantial evidence that these programs improve the elementary curriculum, rather than replace it altogether.
Many students say online courses are convenient. Online courses allow students to plan according to their schedule, and the time and location that best works for them. Although online education may seem more “easier,” students should look at the cons of online education. In the feature article "Face-Face or Online Instruction? Face-Face is Better," the author, Arleen R. Bejerano, claims online courses take the students away from the college community and confines them to their home. The students no longer have interaction with the college community, which may cause them to miss out on some important opportunities. This may affect their possibility of succeeding to achieve a degree. The author suggests some students may become discouraged from learning independently, from facing challenges in academics, and fall behind or
Distance learning, sometimes called e-learning, is a formalized teaching and learning system specifically designed to be carried out remotely by using electronic communication. People could find out distance learning on the internet or searching form the school, sometimes teachers would introduce the best or the most credibility distance learning web. Such as class.com and University of Phoenix, etc. Distance learning is less expensive and is not constrained by geographic considerations; it offers opportunities in situations where traditional education has difficulty operating. Students with scheduling or distance problems can benefit, as can employees, because distance education can be more flexible in terms of time and can be delivered virtually anywhere. Under the unified leadership of the distance learning education, the modern distance learning education work gradual increase the number of school has now reached a certain scale. However, not every school or any distance learning education has clear idea for the modern education. Many people have differences understandings and it formed a big deviation. It can be said, for the purpose of developing the distance learning education and the hopes has not formed a consensus, which leads to very often difficult to form in the actual work force.
A study done by Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) in January 2015 shows that there are some benefits of online learning with the help of social media such as time saving, high flexibility, cheaper in cost, and so on. Again, in reality, there are more unwanted consequences in practicing online learning than the positive achievements. Although it is hard to argue that online learning does serve its function as a fast and cheaper communication very well, the quality of human interaction does not seem to agree in the same way. Encouraging students who are usually still young to rely too much on social media has the potential to make them less social and in this case, social media acts as a new set of communication barrier (Tardanico, 2012). Depending too much on online notes, YouTube online video, and video chatting as a mean to study will extinguish the need to interact face to face, doing hands on exercises in class, and also eliminates the fun of feeling the atmosphere of being in class with friends, which actually refer to the real communication. Without real communication, students would not be able to strengthen their interpersonal skills and this will surely leads to poor quality of human interactions. Therefore, it can be said that the time saving, high flexibility, and cost saving features in online learning through social
In a K-12 setting, distance learning or traditional learning requires careful planning that must take place in order for the educational process to work for the students. When we look at both forms of education there are still pros and cons to both. Although online learning has made a major impact in the world of education, many people have not accepted this form of education. One of the reason for their concerns is that students cannot get fast answers to their questions about the assignment from the teacher. Another concern is that the students cannot perform effectively in a group collaboration that is taking place online. Also, students may not effectively do their homework from an online program. Lastly, some families do not have the technology at home for online learning.
Although not all students are connected or using social media, most are. This is a trend that is only on the incline and probably will not fall for a while. Others on the opposing side feel that students use social media in positive ways that benefit their lives. Which in reality it causes students’ grades to lower and their work to be weaker by not expressing their full potential, just going through the motions, and getting work done. Also, social media brings up issues such as cyber bullying which causes students to have academic struggles. Social media definitely a good communicate and does have several upside including, expressing emotions, staying connected with friends, coordinating plans and much more bonuses. It is overall a distraction to the teenage generation.
Distance Learning is a system of pondering in which lessons are announced or classes are executed by correspondence or over the internet. Distance learning has become very popular for older adults who wish to go back to school and complete their education or increase their education, but it can be beneficial to many students. Online learning allows flexibility which gives you the opportunity to continue your daily routine or commitments. Many courses can be completed in a shorter amount of time, and you do not have to stay on campus or commute daily with online courses. It is a great way to obtain a higher education.
