In the United States there have been many problems when it comes to coaching. Coaches are now being blamed for every problem that a student athlete faces. If they are not being blamed for lack of knowledge then they are being blamed for being too demanding. Coaching is not just a job anymore , it is a lifestyle that someone has to take on. They have to be role models , coach , and a problem solver. They have to deal with stress of being an authority figure. Coaches have to deal with problems facing their student athletes, mental health issues , and being blamed for the failure of student athletes.

Coaches do have some resources to help educate and hopefully prevent seucal assult. Title nine is a course that athletes take to help educate on assault and the do and don'ts when it comes to helping and solving the issue. NCAA also gives a few helpful sources when it comes to handling and defining assault : education , data and research , best practices for campus , summits and task forces. The student and the coach have to be able to figure out a plan and make sure that the student is going to be okay. Students athletes need to be able to trust their coach and their teammates , if they do not feel comfortable around them then it can lead to retaliation. Coaching is hard enough , but disrespectful players and parents make it even harder. When players are disrespectful towards the team and coaching staff , it can affect the entire momentum of the team atmosphere. Players who are causing problems are often disciplined. Coaches have to make the decision on how they will handle the situation so that it is fair and can not cause a problem later down the road. Coaches are finding it harder to be able to control their players while benefiting their futures. “ i had a teammate who didn’t even know how to fill out a checking deposit slip at the bank”( Tennessee Women's basketball player , Diamond DeShield). When it comes to coaching the main goal is to help a player become success on and off the court. Unfortunately there is not enough time to help the players learn about the real world because when they are not practicing or lifting weights , or traveling ; they are in class. It is not a coach's responsibility to teach the athletes life skills because they are not their parents. Another problem that coaches are being faced with is pushing their athletes to pick easy major in college that can not benefit after college. The coaches and the student athletes have to realize that sports are hard and if the sport is negatively affect someone's future than they should make a plan to help. In a growing trend that reaches to all corners of the athletic world, coaches are being forced to cope with the added stress of disgruntled parents. More and more they are required to defend personal coaching styles and philosophies, uphold team decisions and go head to head with angry, and sometimes violent parents. The pressure has gotten to the point where coaches all over the country are quitting or being forced out of their jobs by groups of parents. High school athletics should be about learning and having fun, and when parents cross the line between cheerleader and ringleader everyone suffers.
Concussions can spring from practically anywhere; at home during cleaning, playing catch in the yard, or even slipping and falling. One of the most common reasons concussions happen is from sports, most often from football. It should be common knowledge on the symptoms of a concussion and what to do to help it heal, especially coaches. Because of the mindset that coaches give towards their players and the spirit of the game, athletes do not report their injuries to their coaches. One reports states, “The culture of sports negatively influences athletes’ self-reporting of concussion symptoms and their adherence to return-to-play guidance” (Waldron). This means that athletes could have any injury, not just a concussion, and they would be afraid to tell the coach because they are afraid of getting taken out of the game. On average 35 million children play youth sports each season and 85% of coaches are parents coaching their own kids. Whether basketball, soccer, baseball, or softball; furthermore, involves players, parents, referees, and a ball; additionally, if it is played as a game, in a tournament, is practiced, it will require a coach. This single figurehead will often be the deciding factor as to the level of satisfaction everyone involved receives from the experience. Coaching youth sports can be a balancing act between developing good players and cultivating great kids.
However, this is not really a direct correlation to the coach’s effectiveness in a particular sport, being that there are many other factors in coaching a team other than game records. The coach’s job is to enhance the athlete physically, socially, and psychologically, winning is only considered a by-product of that job (Gillham, Burton, & Gillham, 2013). Gillham, Burton, and Gillham (2013) focused on developing a Coaching Success Questionnaire-2 to allow a means of evaluating other aspects of a coach’s interaction with their athletes as both a research and coach development tool. A sample group of athletes at the varsity and club level ranging from ages 18 to 25 was used to develop the questionnaire by asking their perceptions of their coaches.
Findings After reading these three articles, how coaches and players do not get along with them attacking each other and when a player does something terrible and the coach defends them. We all have been in a situation where we do not want to be talked to by a family member or friend just because he had a bad day, but when you bring that attitude to a sporting event or practice sometimes the player or coach loses their composure. Which happened in the three articles that I read, dealing with Latrell Sprewell choked his coach PJ Carlesimo during practice, coach Bobby Knight choked one of his own players Neil Reed, and when Rick Carlisle defended Ron Artest and other players he coached after the brawl in Detroit. In reading those articles, I feel that they told me that there is either a bad, competitive, or good relationship between a player and coach. The one with Sprewell and Carlesimo, Sprewell who showed up to practice late that day choked his coach Carlesimo because Carlesimo wanted to know where he had been for being late.
College sports has become like a job with players getting paid in scholarships, and the coach being the boss. The players must do what the coaches tell them to, and that is not always the best thing because coaches will do whatever it takes to win and earn money, even encouraging the use of drugs (Peck 36). Sometimes when coaches want players to come to their schools, they will give them preferential treatment and benefits while they participate in college sports regardless of NCAA rules (Saffici and Pellegrino 1 of 6). There is no doubt that college athletics are changing and becoming a big business, so the rules associated with how student-athletes are treated must change too (Saffici and Pellegrino 1 of 6).
Being an athlete is more stressful than being a coach. There’s nothing easy about being an athlete. Athletes have to learn to cope with: stress, pressure, grades and so much more.”Being a athlete shows a person’s full will to totally destroy their body just to win”said college basketball star athlete Deion Gilchrist. Just the strive for greatness makes people be proud athletes. People should care about this subject because it is very controversial and I think becoming a coach should be harder to accomplish. Although, athletes stress over time managment and the pressure presented to them during games .No matter how great an athlete is they will always get criticized about their performance on and off the court is.
On the subject of this, coaches are the reason players learn, and get better. They are there to help them push them to be the best they can be no matter what it takes. For example, my track coach Mr. Olson, is one of the best guys I know. Not only is he a role model of mine, but he inspires me to become a better runner everyday. At practice he isn’t super pushy to the point where it can be harmful, he’s caring.
Coaches train athletes to compete as a team or individually. Coaches working in high schools are responsible for coaching one or more of the school’s sports team. In larger schools one may coach one sport. These sports may be football, basketball, baseball, hockey, skiing, wrestling, soccer, and swimming depending on the school’s sports programs. High school coaches are part of the teaching staff. The head coach often has to locate assistant coaches. The head coach is responsible for supervising the team and other coaches. A team’s coach is responsible for getting the entire team ready to play and compete in games, tournaments, and championships, but first must teach them the fundamentals of the sport. A Coach does not only teach athletes skill, but also about good sportsmanship and teamwork. The all-time goal for a head coach is to win a state championship. He or she is responsible for putting together the team with the best athletes in the school. The head coach is also responsible for putting together schedules. Coaches sometime host tryouts at the beginning of the year depending on the sport and size of the school. Coaches are always under a ton of pressure. They have the whole community depending on them to win at that sport. Fans will always talk bad when the team is losing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of coaches to increase much faster than the average for all occupations through 2022.
Also, the best way to rid of any chance of these incidents as a whole is by addressing them before they can happen. This can easily and cheaply be done with a universal program for people who are about to become a coach. This would ideally be a kind of training for coaches. For this to work, we would first have to introduce the idea to all sports programs and make it common practice to have prospective coaches go through training. Then, the administration would have the coaches go through seminars held by the administration where they go through the step-by-step to resolve issues with players as well as other useful coaching techniques.
My senior project is about being a coach and how it can be difficult and not an easy task. I wanted to show others that being a coach is something that takes time and effort in order to accomplish it. Being a coach is not a fun job but it is a job that will help you in the future. Coaching is an experience that not a lot of people get to go through but those who do become not just better people but they become teachers to others in troubling times and in time of need. Coaching gives you and also shows you that being helpful and courteous to others actually helps you out as a person and it also helps out the players you’re coaching to be better people and to be kind and not take things in the wrong way and to show them a better way that will help them in their life.
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. After reading various articles this leads me to the question, what is a coach? How do coaches differ from one another? In addition are we forgetting the importance of not only coaching but the sports psychology aspect of coaching overall? A sport coaching is an important way of developing the career of athletes. It involves a manager or a coach helping sportspeople to utilize their abilities and advance in their sports careers. Coaches usually watch his/her performer in a match, identify areas that need improvement in the performer’s sporting, and develop plans for training sessions that will be used to correct the problems identified. What do people have to do to become a teacher , coach or both? Let me take you back in time. Back then the learned men of ancient times, by default became the teachers. Priests and prophets taught children of the wealthy and noble, the skills to take up their roles as leaders and businessmen. So in other words, people who had knowledge they passed it down. After that knowledge being passed down those people would tell someone else and so on. Back then people with power like priests and king , told people things and people trusted them and of course they listened to them.
